Many American First Ladies have been remembered because of the ways they have influenced their husbands. Other First Ladies have made the history books on their own.
Bess Truman and Lady Bird Johnson made it their business to send messages during their husbands’ speeches. When Lady Bird Johnson thought her husband was talking too long, she wrote a note to ask him to stop it. Once Bess Truman didn’t like what her husband was saying on television, so she phoned him and said, “If you can’t talk more politely than that in public, you come right home.”
It was First Lady Helen Taft’s idea to plant the famous cherry trees in Washington D.C. Mrs Taft also influenced the men members around her in a strange way: she made them shave off their beards (剃掉他们的胡子)!

Do you like listening to music Do you often turn up the music when you use earphones If so, your hearing may have been damaged.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is worried that 1.1 billion young people are damaging their hearing by listening to loud music. Nearly half the young people in developed countries may lose their hearing because of the “unsafe use” of music players, including smartphones. Loud music in nightclubs and parties also makes it worse. The WHO advises young people to listen to music for just one hour a day. Dr Etienne Krug told BBC, “What we’re trying to do is to draw people’s attention to a problem that is not talked about enough.”
Dr Krug said keeping the music down and controlling the listening time to less than one hour a day would save a lot of people’s hearing. However, he also said, “Even an hour can be too much if the music is too loud.” Ralph Holme, a researcher, explained how loud noise can damage ears. He said, “Loud sounds damage your hearing by killing off thousands of little hair cells (细胞) in the inner ear. The cells can tell different sounds through vibration (振动). But they are very weak — they get damaged easily and even die if they vibrate too much.” He warned, “The bigger problem is that they don’t grow back and the ear can no longer get sound.”
No one wants to lose their hearing! Therefore, next time when you listen to music, make sure it’s not too loud and only listen for less than an hour.

Years ago a professor gave a group of students this job: Go to the slums (贫民窟). Take 200 boys between the ages of 12 and 16, and find out their background and environment. Then predict (预测)their chances for the future. The students, after making social surveys, talking to the boys, and collecting much information, predicted that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in prison.
Twenty-five years later, another group of students of this professor were given the job of testing that prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys — by then men — were still there, a few had died, and some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the 200. They found that only four of the 200 boys had ever spent time in prison.
Why did these men, who had lived in a dangerous place of crime (犯罪),have such a surprisingly good record in their life Some of them told the students, “Well, there was a woman teacher, she…” They asked further and found that 75 percent, of the boys were influenced (影响)by the same woman. The students went to the woman teacher. They wanted to know how she had such a wonderful influence over that group of children. She could give them some reasons. There are many people in the world but they aren’t of the same height. Some are tall and some are short. It is decided by genes (基因). Genes could decide most features (特征)of our body and height is just one of the thousands. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you with a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall too. But if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to the expected height. But getting enough sleep and exercise will meet your need.
It’s certain that you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6cm) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (青春期).
Don’t be afraid if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a time to grow fastest during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first change of puberty.

When I was in high school, Dad set up a food stand on the street near my school. Every day when I finished school, my classmates and I would pass his food stand. But I really hated talking to Dad in front of his food stand.
One night, I couldn’t stand (忍受)it any more and shouted, “Dad, could you stop selling your noodles I don’t need a father who sells noodles on the street!”At that moment, Dad was astonished. His eyes were filled with sadness.
My mom later told me Dad sold noodles to save money for my university education. I was so foolish and even today I still feel sorry for that night.

Born into a farmer’s family, life was not easy when I was a kid. We were so poor that we often did not know where our next meal was coming from. I had to sell vegetables at the marketplace to support my family.
A storyteller once came to the marketplace, and I went to listen to him. My mother was unhappy with me for forgetting my job. But that night, while she was making clothes for us under the weak light of an oil lamp, I couldn’t help retelling stories I’d heard that day. She listened impatiently at first, because in her eyes professional storytellers were smooth-talking men — nothing good ever came out of their mouths. But slowly she was attracted by my retold stories, and from that day on, she never gave me any task on market days, but an unspoken agreement to enjoy new stories. I tried my best to retell the stories for her in lively detail. Soon, she wasn’t the only member of my audience, which later included many of my relatives.
But talkative (健谈的)kids were not well thought of in our village, for they could bring trouble to themselves and their families when they talked too much. Mother often reminded me not to talk so much, wanting me to be a quiet and modest (谦虚的)teenager. However, my natural desire (欲望)to talk never went away, and that is what makes my name — Mo Yan, which means “no speaking”. This strong wish to talk also improved my ability to express myself, which is important to writers who are also considered as storytellers.

According to a UK study, women aren’t likely to keep secrets. Now researchers have been able to tell exactly down to the minute how long it takes before a woman will tell others the secret you tell her. It is 47 hours to be exact. They invited 3,000 British women to do the research. They found that while four out of ten admit (承认)they can never keep a secret, two out of three feel sorry afterwards. It takes women just under two days before they give away (泄露)your secret.
Director of the study, Michael Cox says one of the reasons for the result is that most of the 3,000 women are drunk all the time. But another expert, Andrea Smith, doesn’t think so. In his opinion, men are almost the same as women. When men are drunk, they don’t remember the stories that they have told you. But usually, for women, it is just a topic, while for men, it is friendships between men.
Now the question is why women do it and whether (是否)it makes them feel better or not. According to the study, women feel like they are getting something out of their hearts, or they feel like they get something inside and they just need to share, which will make them feel better. It’s almost like a usual thing, shoe shopping, or getting a haircut. They feel that they are connected with another woman if they say something about another woman. As for men, they sometimes do it, because it’s just a way to express their own ideas.

Thirty years ago I worked in a company. My job was to sell the cars. I was young and strong and I had been to most parts of the world and I spent one fifth of my time in the trains or planes. I liked such a life and sometimes I called myself “traveler”.
But one day I got into trouble. It was a cold morning. It blew heavily and the ground was covered with thick (厚的) snow outside. I was still in bed though it was nine. I had to take the next one. It meant I would wait for nearly five hours in the waiting room. But five hours later a passenger said the information showed there was a bomb (炸弹) in our plane and the policemen were looking for it. And another five hours passed and most passengers lost their patience before we were allowed to get on the plane. At the entrance (入口) each passenger and their luggage had to be examined. James is a good student and he has lots of friends, but he also has a problem. Some older boys are bullying (欺负) him at school. James is very unhappy and he doesn’t know what to do about it. Here .are some suggestions for him and others in this situation.
Don’t feel worried. It’s not your fault! Being bullied can make you feel very lonely and angry, but you are not alone. Don’t feel that you have to hide the problem. You should find a person you can trust and tell him or her about it. It might be your teacher, your parents, or even your friend. After you tell someone, you will get some support and feel relaxed.
Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but here are other things you can do. Some people express their feelings more easily on paper. Write a letter to someone or keep a diary. You can write down all the details about what the bullies do, and when and where the bullying happens. You can use it as proof (证据) to show what is going on. And it is a wonderful idea to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another adult. Then the bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter!
Also, don’t show you are sad and don’t try to fight with the bullies. You could get in trouble yourself. Ignore them and just walk away. The bullies will soon stop.

Snowflakes (雪花)can be seen in winter in northern cities. Generally speaking, snowflakes are white. They seem like white stars felling from the sky. But they don’t always look white.
Sometimes they appear to have other colors. Some are red, yellow, or black. There have been snowflakes of almost every shape. Think how it would seem to have these coming all around you. Wouldn’t they look pretty
Black snow came down in France one year. Another year gray snow fell in Japan. It was
found that such snow was mixed with ashes (灰).
This made it seem dark. Red snow has come down in other countries. When this happened, it was mixed with red dust. That is why it looked different. Most snow looks white, but it is really the color of ice. It is ice that comes from snow clouds. Each snowflake begins with a small drop of water. More water forms around this drop.
The way the water freezes (结冰)gives the snowflake its shape.
No two snowflakes are of the same size or shape. All start out completely and have six sides. Some snowflakes are broken when they hit the ground. Others melt (融化)as they fall.
When air is cold and dry, the falling snowflakes are small and hard. If the air is wet and warm, the snowflakes are big and soft.
Would you be surprised to see snowflakes as big as your head felling from the sky It happened once in our country. It could happen again.

Have you ever dreamed about sending a letter to yourself or your friends in the future While express mail (快递) is a fast way to send your letters, there is another type of mail appearing in China as a new business — future mail.
“The letter should be sent next Mother’s Day and not a day earlier!” Lin Xiaofan, a college student in Shanghai, told one of the companies offering the service.
Lin Xiaofan wrote the letter to her mother nearly a year earlier to express her love to her mother for next Mother ’ s Day.
“Offering this service makes people slow down and lets them understand the meaning of ‘time’ in another way,” said Zheng Zhimin, the manager of a“future mail” company. Zheng thinks “fixture mail” letters help remind us of care, friendship and love.
While “future mail” is becoming more and more popular, some people are wondering what will happen if the address changes or if the company goes broken before the letters arrive. Zheng said 6ustomers are glad to sign a contract (签订合同) to make sure that they can be compensated (补偿) if their letters are lost or damaged.
Most of the customers are college students and young workers. Psychologists said that young Chinese might have a new way to express their feelings through this service. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective (虚构的侦探)who, since his creation in 1887 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has appeared in many books, films, TV series and also games. The newest show of Sherlock Holmes is a BBC production which invites Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, two famous actors, as the two main characters.
This recent BBC production is the most modem version on the traditional Sherlock Holmes storyline, showing modem day crimes in London. In the show, Sherlock played by Cumberbatch, and his partner Watson played by Freeman, decide to solve different crimes together. Although they often disagree on things, they work together to solve the crimes.
I find this show very interesting to watch. I can see how certain crimes are solved, but it is also very funny and entertaining (娱乐的)as it also includes things like love, friendship and family life. Sherlock is my favourite programme to watch.
However, this series is slightly different from many other dramas which have been on television. A “Sherlock” episode lasts 90 minutes, longer than a normal 60-minute one, which is great for the audience as we can see more dramas, fights and jokes. Each episode makes you feel you can’t wait for the next one a week later. However, this series has only 3 episodes. This means it ends soon and I know many people, myself included, feel very sad about this.
The former series ended on a huge cliffhanger (悬念)before having over a year to wait for this series, and this series does the same. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys funny and interesting TV programmes.

A. It is much too long for the audience.
B. It’s very interesting and funny.
C. It’s different from the normal ones.
D. It’s worth seeing if you like funny TV shows.
()45. What is the purpose of writing the passage
A. To introduce Sherlock Holmes to us.
B. To show us how Sherlock Holmes solves crimes.
C. To recommend the TV drama Sherlock to us.
D. To give his comments on the TV drama Sherlock.

I was putting the pudding on a plate when my brother came into the kitchen. He found the pudding and asked for it. “It’s mine! I was the only one that found it!” I shouted “You are my elder brother. Arabs (阿拉伯人)think it is a very bad manner to start talking business at once. Even the busiest people always take time to be polite and offer snacks. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this.
The meeting is a way of doing business in the Arab world. Very often, you will have to discuss your business with some people you don’t know, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted (被打断)sometimes by people who come into the room without being asked and talk or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking to, and leave. Act just like you don’t hear, and never show that you are not pleased at being interrupted.
Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is vagueness (含糊)in doing business in the Middle East, which will make a newcomer feel strange. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions.
When an Arab says yes, he may mean “maybe”. When he says maybe, he may mean “no”. You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab because it is impolite. Instead of “no”,he may say “inshallah”, which means “if God is willing”. On the other hand, “yes” doesn’t always mean “yes”. A smile and a slow nod might seem like he may agree with you, but in fact, your host is being polite. An Arab thinks it impolite not to agree with a guest.

Blondes (金发女郎)look j very beautiful, but they’re also considered as not being clever. Having a “blonde I moment” has even become a phrase used when someone makes a mistake. Now, a study has found this saying is not right. The opposite could be true in fact.
Researchers found women, who had natural hair color of blonde, had a higher IQ score than those with natural red or black hair. The result of the study came from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) — a national survey of people between 14 and 21 years old when they were first studied in 1979. In 1980, participants (参与者)in the NLSY79 took the Armed Forces Qualification Test, which is used to decide the IQ of new soldiers. The findings showed that blonde-haired people had an average IQ of 103.2, compared to 102.7 for those with brown hair, 101.2 for those with red hair and 100.5 for those with black hair. Blonde people were more likely to be in the highest IQ kinds than those with other hair colors and less likely to be in the lowest IQ kinds.
