There was once a farmer who had a large field of corn. He worked the land with the greatest care, for he wanted to sell the corn and buy good things for his family. But he saw his corn dry up, for no rain fell, and he feared that he was to have no crop. Every morning he went out to the field and looked at the thirsty stalks and wished for the rain to fall.
One day, as he stood looking up at the sky, two little raindrops saw him, and one said to the other: “Look at that farmer. I feel very sorry for him. He took such pains with his field of corn, and now it is drying up. I wish I might help him.”
“Yes,” said the other, “but you are only a little raindrop. What can you do You can’t wet even one hill.”
“Well,” said the first, “I know, to be sure, I cannot do much; but perhaps I can cheer the farmer a little, and I am going to do my best. I’ll go to the field to show my good will, if I can’t do anything more. Here I go!”
The first raindrop had no sooner started for the field than the second one said: “Well, if you really insist upon going, I think I will go, too. Here I come!” And down went the raindrops. One came — pat —on the farmer’s nose, and one fell on a thirsty stalk of corn.

China launched a Long March 3B carrier rocket on May 17 to transport a satellite into space for the country’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System, marking the first deployment (部署) of a Beidou satellite in three years.
The satellite has typical functions for a third-generation Beidou satellite — positioning, navigation and pared with previous Beidou satellites, it has some upgraded hardware and features a stronger signal, faster transmission speed and higher operational stability, said Chen Zhonggui, chief designer of Beidou’s third-generation satellites.
Despite being called a backup, the satellite is designed to start working as soon as it enters orbit. Its primary tasks are to expand the service areas of Beidou’s short-messaging function, enhance Beidou’s positioning accuracy as well as improve the network’s operational continuity and reliability, he noted.
“Before the end of this year, another two backup Beidou satellites are scheduled to be launched to further strengthen the reliability of the network,” said Wang Dong, deputy project manager of the third-generation Beidou network.
Beidou is currently China’s largest civilian satellite system and one of four global navigation networks, along with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.
Since 2000, a total of 60 Beidou satellites, including the first four experimental ones, have been lifted on 45 Long March 3 series rockets from Xichang. In June 2020, the final satellite to complete Beidou’s third-generation network was lifted by a Long March 3B rocket at the Xichangcenter. The following month, President Xi Jinping announced that the system had been completed and had begun providing full-scale global services.
Currently, there are 46 satellites in active service, including the latest one. And China plans to establish the next generation of the Beidou system by 2035. The new version will be “omnipresent (无处不在的), smarter and more integrated” and upon its completion, there will be Beidou service not only on land and sea, but also in the sky, outer space and deep within the oceans, according to the China Satellite Navigation Office.
8. Which is not the function of the latest Beidou satellite
A. To strengthen the reliability of the network.
B. To carry other backup satellite to the system.
C. To increase short-messaging service capacity.
D. To promote high-precision positioning service.
9. According to the text, Beidou Navigation Satellite System .
A. will be replaced by another system by 2035
B. is the world’s largest civilian satellite system
C. has provided full-scale service since July 2020
D. has 46 satellites in active service except the latest one

The human brain’s perception(感知)of sounds extends beyond its frequency and amplitude(振幅). Sounds can evoke(引起)various meanings and emotions. They can also be perceived as interesting and informative or simply noise.
In a recent study, neuroscientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne(EPFL), Lausanne University Hospital, and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland have uncovered an intriguing bias in how people perceive pleasing voices.
When it comes to whispering sweet-nothings, the researchers found that targeting the left side of a listener’s ear has a peculiar effect on their perception of voices.
Brain scans of 13 adults have revealed that positive human sounds, such as laughter, evoke stronger neural activity in the auditory system when heard from the left side. According to Science Alert, this suggests that the human auditory cortex(听觉皮层)can recognize the direction of sounds that evoke happiness.
The underlying reasons for this preference remain unclear as the experiments only focused on changes in activity in the auditory cortex. Further research would be needed to understand how such changes in neural activity translate into the perception of these sounds.
Previous studies have indicated that the left ear is better at detecting the emotional tone in someone’s voice, suggesting a potential specialization. It was previously believed that the right hemisphere(大脑半球)of the auditory cortex, which receives information from the left ear, was superior in processing emotions. However, the recent findings challenge this assumption.
Both sides of the auditory cortex were activated when participants listened to happy vocalizations from different directions, but neuroscientist Sandra da Costa said recordings heard exclusively on the left side produced a significantly stronger neurological response. This effect was not observed when positive vocalizations came from the front or right side, indicating a specific association with the left side.
The direction of a sound can impact its quality and our perception. The research suggests that heightened sensitivity to certain sounds from specific directions may have had evolutionary advantages, enabling humans to be more alert to potential threats approaching from behind.
12. The recent study reveals that people have .
A. stronger neural activity in auditory system
B. a bias against pleasing sounds from left side
C heightened sensitivity to human vocalizations
D. a preference for positive voices from the left side
13. What does the underlined word “translate” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. transform B. transport C. interpret D. isolate
14. How does the researchers conduct the study
A. By analyzing participants’ perception.
B. By observing participants’ brain scans.
C. By making contrasts among participants.
D. By tracking participants’ performances.
15. What do we know about the recent study
A. It reveals only voices heard on the left produced neural activities.
B. It proves the right hemisphere was better in processing emotions.
C. It may serve to enlighten the studies of modern human evolution.
D. It uncovers the reasons of stronger activities in the auditory cortex.

On Saturday, the animal shelter is filled with voices. I can’t see the kitties because I’m blind. I listen hard. Do any of those meows sound like kitten meows
“I don’t think I hear any kittens (小奶猫), Mom,” I say.
“You’re right, Annie. But there are lots of cats, fat ones, skinny ones…”Mom holds my hand. The shelter director, Mrs. Pat, takes us inside the cat pen. I sit down and stretch out my hands to pet the kitties. A big, warm kitty sits down against my side. “Sammy likes you, Annie. He’s the big one,” Mrs. Pat says.
“I like him, too.” I pet Sammy’s soft, furry coat, his loud purr rumbling under my fingers. “Will Sammy get adopted today ” I ask.
“Maybe,” says Mrs. Pat. “He’s an older kitty, and most people want kittens. But he’s so loving, maybe today will be his turn.”
My mom and I take a pregnant cat, Muffin, home with us. We’ll care for her until she has her kittens. And I can keep one kitten for myself!
One morning, I get a surprise! I can feel soft, mewing little bundles inside the box with Muffin! Mom told me there are six. They’re all about the same size, except for one. He’s big! “Like Sammy,” I say.
“Not quite that big,” Mom says with a laugh.
When I hold them to my cheek, they feel silky and smell sweet and oaty, like a field of summer grass. Their mews are high and tiny.
“So, do you know yet which kitten you’ll keep ” Mom asks me one day.
I bounce on my knees, saying “Oh! How do I choose ”
“Well, try to listen to your heart,” Mom says.
Should it be Jet-Jet, with the long tail Or Mimi, with the tiny voice Or should it be Mr. Motor, the one with the humming purr A purr like Sammy’s, I think. All the kittens are fun. But which is the right one
On Monday, the shelter is quiet. I still can’t decide which one to keep. Mom asks me to stay in the cat room and pick my kitty while she takes care of the paperwork with Mrs. Pat.

C. heightened sensitivity to human vocalizations
D. a preference for positive voices from the left side
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

Pat.

【答案】I sit down and open the carrier. The six little kittens meow all the way as they set out to explore the new surroundings. I can’t help but think of Sammy. Has he got adopted I reach out my hand, uttering, “Sammy ” Just then, I feel a big, warm kitty sniffing my hand, the familiar purrs vibrating through my fingertips. It’s Sammy! I put Sammy in my lap. Sammy rubs his soft head against my palm, seeking more affection. With each stroke, his body is at ease in my presence. I hear a voice in my heart echoing “Take him home.”
When Mom and Mrs. Pat come back, Sammy is sleeping in my lap. Hearing their steps, I look up and declare excitedly, “I’ve decided to adopt Sammy.” They burst into laughter and I can feel their happiness. “Thank you, Annie.” she says. “Sammy has been waiting for a forever home for so long.” From that day on, Sammy accompanies me to explore the world and navigate through life. And as I hold him close, I know that I made the right choice. Sammy is always be my little miracle, the one who shows me that love knows no boundaries, not even blindness.
