It was a dream born in fire. When Andrea Peterson was 5, she and her mother were trapped on the balcony of a burning building. “Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, and little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a lifelong goal. She wanted to fight fires like her rescuers did.
But in the early 1960’s, little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize about such great dreams. She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed. “You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
And then, as it tends to do, life didn’t give her a chance to realize the dream. When Peterson was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空技术) — the only female in her class, she met her husband, Dennis, a Vietnam vet who later developed cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved and, in 2007, Dennis left the world.
At 61, She earned her emergency medical technician license (执照) and responded to fire calls with the ambulance (救护车). It turned to be a life-and-death situation, and Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She found that her years of caring for Dennis had prepared her for dealing with different hurts and ills.
A year later, she told her boss she wanted to be a firefighter. The fact that everyone else in her training team was between 18 and 21 didn’t discourage her. She passed the writing test and she cleared the physical difficulties and finally, that little girl’s dream became a reality.
Peterson knows that the window on her physical abilities won’t stay open forever. But when interviewed, she said, “I worry a little when I get too old ... However, I did get my dream.”
24. Why did Andrea Peterson want to be a firefighter
A. She narrowly escaped from the fire. B. She was once rescued by firemen.
C. She wanted to live an adventurous life. D. She was encouraged by her mother.
25. What happened to Peterson when she was 61
A. She carefully looked after her dying husband.
B. She joined in the training team to be a firefighter.
C. She successful got a degree in aviation technology.
D. She helped the injured using her medical knowledge.
26. What words can best describe Andrea Peterson
A. Determined and brave. B. Kind and humorous.
C. Confident and friendly. D. Generous and honest.
27. What does Peterson’s story tell us
A. It’s never too late to change a job. B. Where there is a will there is a way.
C. Time and tide wait for no man. D. He who laughs last laughs best.
C
There’s nothing quite like cooking over my gas stove with beautiful blue flame, so quickly adjusted and so suited to its purpose that when things run smoothly in life, we say we are “cooking with gas”.
But in recent years environmentalists have been warning that gas stoves are bad for the climate and not so great for our health, either. New studies published this year have heightened health worries about poisonous fumes (烟气) in our kitchens. Is the evidence sufficient to shift our cooking habits
The big surprise in one new study, conducted by environmental scientists at Stanford University, is the amount of unburned gas that leaks into kitchens when a stove is off. They found that more than three quarters of methane (甲烷) that escapes from a stove does so when it is not in use, most likely through imperfect pipe fittings. Second, there are the pollutants created by burning when a stove is on, most notably nitrogen oxides, which can upset the lungs.
Drew Michanowicz, a senior scientist at PSE Healthy Energy, a nonprofit research and policy group, said, “A lot of us work at home now. We take about 20, 000 breaths a day, and my stove is like 10 feel away from me. What else is in natural gas ” Michanowicz also frets that as more people weatherize their homes and close windows, they are reducing air exchange, which means indoor pollution will be worse.
Not surprisingly, the American Gas Association has criticized both studies, saying the levels of VOCs found in the Boston study are “reassuringly low”.
What is the average home cook to make of all this. They might follow Michanowicz, who bought an induction burner (电磁炉) and does much of his cooking on it. As for me, I’m making some changes. I’ve switched to an electric kettle for boiling water, and despite its annoying noise, I now use the exhaust hood (吸油烟机) over my stove-something only about 25 to 40 percent of people say they do. And weather permitting, I’ll open a window.
28. What does the author think of her using gas stove according to paragraph 1
A. It is challenging. B. It is convenient.
C It is quite time-consuming. D. It is friendly to the environment.
29. What leads most methane to escape from a stove according to the new study
A. The inefficiently-burnt gas. B. The pollutants created by burning.
C. The improperly-placed stove. D. The poor quality of the pipe fittings.
30. What can best replace the underlined word “frets” in paragraph 4
A. worries B. promises C. denies D. wonders
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The influence of Michanowicz. B. The importance of electric devices.
C. The future of induction burners. D. Changes of people’s cooking habits.
D
“You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math achievement over time.
Parents who make comments connecting their children’s performance with personal qualities like IQ are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who connect their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were divided into two groups across a year to measure their math achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts rather than their IQ or other personal qualities. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children give both responses. While responses focused on strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement results, children who receive more responses about their personal qualities — especially, related to failure — are more likely to avoid harder math problems, show higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses mean poor math change in children over time researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to encourage children.
32. Which of the following is an example of process response
A. What works well for your study B. Running is in your DNA.
C. You are a lucky dog. D. Why are you such a math talent
33. What can be learned from the study results
A. Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B. Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
C. Process responses help with children’s math achievement.
D. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
34. What do researchers advise parents to do
A. Ignore children’s math problems. B. Protect their own beliefs.
C. Stress children’s performance. D. Limit person responses.
35 Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Strategy Children Use to Learn Math Helps
B. Responses to improve Children’s Math Performance
C. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters
D. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math

Trevor, a thirteen-year-old boy who could read well. Yet, in spite of his reading skills, Trevor was failing. He had been failing exams since first grade, as he was passed on from Grade 1 to Grade 7. Trevor was a big boy, looking much bigger than a thirteen year old. However, Trevor went unnoticed… until Miss Brown.
Miss Brown was smiling, young, and Trevor was attracted! Yet, still he failed. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Brown. His heart would break under her sharp words! Still, he did not study.
One day, the entire grade was tested for basic skills. Trevor hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was in the woods, where he often escaped alone. No one checked on him. No one knew he was gone. Strangely, Trevor never missed a day of school.
The next day, Miss Brown’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“Trevor, pay attention!”
Trevor locked his look on Miss Brown as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…the smartest boy is failing my class!”
She just stared at Trevor, as the class turned around for a good look. Trevor dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, it was war! Trevor still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn (固执的).
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” Miss Brown shouted. But Trevor was unmoved.
“You’re smart enough! You’ll see a change!” Totally unmoved.
“Trevor! Please! I care about you!”
Suddenly, Trevor got it! Someone cared about him Someone, CARED ABOUT HIM !
Trevor went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon. Walking into the house, he took one look around. He, for the first time ever, gathered up his schoolbooks and did his homework.

W: Oh, Kevin. I’m preparing a presentation for the city library. It’s about a girl named Tracy Woods.
M: What’s special about her
W: It was an amazing story. She brought specially trained dogs to special education schools, and helped children to build confidence. She believes that dogs can help children in ways we can’t. Dogs don’t judge, and they don’t care who you are or what you look like.
M:But putting dogs into a school Aren’t they going to mess up the school
W:Don’t worry. All the dogs are assessed and trained properly. There are now 40 dogs working with children aged from 6 to 18.
M: I hope the children love them.
W: Of course they do. I’ve got some pictures. I’ll show them at my presentation tomorrow morning.

C. It is quite time-consuming.
C The future of induction burners. D. Changes of people’s cooking habits.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. D

【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“There’s nothing quite like cooking over my gas stove with beautiful blue flame, so quickly adjusted and so suited to its purpose that when things run smoothly in life, we say we are “cooking with gas”.(没有什么比在我的煤气炉上用美丽的蓝色火焰做饭更美妙的了,它调整得如此之快,如此适合它的目的,以至于当生活中一切顺利时,我们说我们在“用煤气做饭”。)”可判断,作者认为用煤气炉做饭是非常便利的。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“They found that more than three quarters of methane (甲烷) that escapes from a stove does so when it is not in use, most likely through imperfect pipe fittings.(他们发现,超过四分之三的甲烷是在炉子不用的时候逸出的,很可能是通过不完美的管道配件逸出的。)”可知,大多甲烷气体是通过不完美的管道配件逸出的。故选D。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下一句“that as more people weatherize their homes and close windows, they are reducing air exchange, which means indoor pollution will be worse.(随着越来越多的人对房屋进行防寒改造,关闭窗户,他们减少了空气交换,这意味着室内污染会更严重。)”可知,划线单词后的内容是让人担心的问题。选项A“worries (担忧)”;选项B“promises (承诺)”;选项C“denies (否认)”;选项D“wonders (想知道)”。故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“What is the average home cook to make of all this. They might follow Michanowicz, who bought an induction burner (电磁炉) and does much of his cooking on it. As for me, I’m making some changes.
Because person responses mean poor math change in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Strategy Children Use to Learn Math Helps
B. Responses to improve Children’s Math Performance
C. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters
D. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Because person responses mean poor math change in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home.(由于对人的反应意味着随着时间的推移,孩子的数学变化很差,研究人员建议父母在家里限制这种反应)”可知,专家建议父母限制个人反应,故选D项。

Nowadays, an increasing number of teenagers have their own mobile phones and some of them are addicted to playing with mobile phones. There is no doubt that playing with mobile phones too much not only makes it hard to concentrate on their lessons but also does harm to their physical and mental health.
Therefore, it is high time that we should take some measures to solve the problem. Firstly, school should strictly forbid students to bring mobile phones to school. Secondly, parents should limit the time that they spend using the mobile phones. Last but not least, the students should be aware of the negative impact of the mobile phones on their life and learn to use mobile phones properly.
I firmly believe that as long as we are determined to deal with the problem, the problem will be greatly improved.

【答案】The following Monday he arrived at school earlier, waiting for Miss Brown to enter the classroom. She walked in, all sparkle and smiles! He desired for her smile to turn on him. It did not. Miss Brown, immediately, gave a quiz on the weekend homework. Trevor hurried through the test, and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss Brown took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. Trevor walked back to his desk, his heart pounding within his chest. As he sat down, he couldn’t resist another look at Miss Brown. Then, Miss Brown stood up, holding his paper.
“The smartest boy in our class had just passed his first test on homework!” announced Miss Brown. She glanced up at Trevor, then down, then up, her face breaking into a big smile. The whole class seemed in total shock and then burst into a long round of applause. Overwhelmed by excitement and surprise, tears sparkling in his eyes, Trevor felt nothing was the same from that moment. He discovered that not only could he learn, but he was good at it. He discovered that could translate the things he learned into his own life. A change gradually took place within the heart of one boy, all because of one teacher, who cared.
