Jude and Leo Hawes have come a long way since they entered the world, born at just 29weeks. Airlifted from their home in Launceston to hospital in Hobart, the twins, now happy and healthy two-year-olds, were delivered into the ICU to be cared for and monitored. A gift from the Tasmanian branch of Octopus for a Preemie (早产儿) for them was a light in the dark.
“These stories really do remind us why we all spend so much time and our own money making these octopuses (章鱼),”
Bianca, the co-founder of the project, tells Woman’s Day. “It means the world to me that I can do something in whatever
small way to make the journey for the babies and parents just that little bit easier. I believe if we can help others, no matter how small a way it is, then we should.”
The eight-legged creatures are specially created to calm and comfort early newborns.“In instances where the babies can’t be held for weeks, or even months, the familiarity of the parents’ scent (气味) on the octopuses can help with the bonding process because babies already know it as a safe scent when parents can finally hold them,”Bianca says.
The volunteer project began after a nurse reached out to Bianca to create a prototype of octopus she could take into hospital for a trial.
“It took me a good four to five months to teach myself how to write a pattern and get it approved,”explains Bianca, who creates the handmade helpful octopuses for no cost to families in need.
“I started making them as fast as I could, but I wasn’t able to make the amount they needed.” Soon Bianca met the group’s other co-founder Andrea Carey and the pair started creating the creatures in together in their spare time.

Samir Lakhani’s enthusiasm for social work began when he studied environmental science at the University of
Pittsburgh. Required to complete an internship, he traveled to Cambodia to study the effects of climate change on
communities that had lived off the land for centuries.
While studying in Cambodia, he saw something he would never forget: a village woman bathing her newborn son with detergent. “It is a harsh and toxic alternative to the piece of soap that should never be used on the skin,” Lakhani remembered. “The baby was crying. I didn’t know what I could do, but as I returned to my hotel room and stepped into the bathroom, I realized that my housekeeper had thrown away the piece of soap I had hardly touched.”
That brief experience was a turning point for him and then he founded the nonprofit Eco-Soap Bank. “We shouldn’t live in a world where more than 2 million children die per year because of diseases that could easily be stopped by washing hands,” Lakhani stated.
Since 2014, Eco-Soap Bank has employed more than 150 economically disadvantaged women in ten developing countries to recycle leftover hotel soap. These women sanitize the soap and give the new product to people in need. “During the COVID- 19 pandemic period, hotel occupancy has dropped and hotels are closing, so we need to change our recycling form,” he says. Lakhani is now reaching out to soap producers from all over the world, asking them if they would like to give scraps to Eco-Soap Bank, a natural byproduct from the production line. He said, “On average, 10% of all soap is wasted before it even hits stores’ shelves. We have recycled and reproduced 1.5 million pieces of soap in the last two months, and this is all female-powered, because that’s our duty.”
However, during the pandemic, the way to transport the soap to where it is needed for people puzzles Lakhani. He is trying to solve this problem and needs more help.
12 .What does Paragraph 2 talk about
A .How Eco-Soap Bank works.
B .How Cambodian people usually bathe.
C .What made Lakhani establish Eco-Soap Bank.
D .Why Lakhani chose Cambodia as the internship place.
13 .How does Lakhani change the recycling form during the COVID- 19 pandemic period
A .By asking for scraps from soap producers. B .By paying out of his own pocket for soap.
C .By producing soap with a production line. D .By employing more women to recycle soap.
14 .What might be a problem Lakhani is faced with now
A .How to protect the soap during the transportation.
B .How to get the soap to where it needs to be.
C .When to send the soap to developing countries.
D .How to give guidance on sanitizing the leftover soap.
15 .Which words can best describe Samir Lakhani
A .Traditional, awesome and warm-hearted. B .Thoughtful, clever but unfriendly.
C .Careful, knowledgeable and honest. D .Kind, intelligent and responsible.
16 .Which can be a suitable title for the text

Confucius in Foreigners’ Eyes
I first met Confucius in a friend’s living room, nearly10 years ago. OK, ______ 17______.
It was a collection of his most famous lines, printed and bound and resting on a coffee table. As I scanned the pages, a vision of the man began to form in my mind.
It wasn’t until last Saturday, though, that I finally had a chance to put a name to the face-that of Hong Kong star Chow Yun-fat, who plays the sage in the new biopic Confucius.
_______ 18_______.
In the movie, we see a man who is all at once humble and wise and humorous and intelligent and disciplined and firm and clever.
Even when Zhou’s character all but throws herself on Confucius, ________ 19________.
If this is, indeed, the real man, meeting him would be, all at once, an incredibly exhilarating experience and also a very depressing one.
_________20_________. This is certainly a noble goal. Based upon my own experience, though, it is much easier said than done.
For example, I cannot imagine walking away from the temptress without the assistance of a supernatural power-no matter how many of the sage’s proverbs I had internalize.
In this sense, I am more in awe of Confucius than ever before. A person’s words take on far more significance when he or she actually lives them out.
If Confucius really was the man that Chow portrays, ________21________.
A .In the movie, Confucius talks of changing oneself from within.
B .he was indeed one for the ages.
C .he must be a person beyond imagination.
D .so it wasn’t really the bearded Chinese philosopher.
E .thus, it wasn’t the philosopher I had pictured in my mind.
F .the philosopher walks away with barely a trace of desire on his face.
G .I went to see the film knowing very little of Confucius’ personal story.

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, you should always think of other people and try to help other people.
One night after going to class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a take-out, I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes(边缘) of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity(慷慨). But to me, it was what any ”human being“ should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table, I asked him to order whatever he wanted. He only ordered a hamburg, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he
wanted.

The frustrated fox didn’t come up with an idea to get the grapes but to go away! And as he was walking away, he still comforted himself with that these grapes must be acid! It is very clear that he was looking for an excuse for his not being able to pick them.
After reading the fable, I realize that when we are wrong, we should not find an excuse, to cover up our own problems, instead we should bravely admit the mistakes and try to correct them. Only in this way might we succeed someday, otherwise, we may also become the sour grape fox.
