Most animals h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ave little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系) which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.
Sometimes an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustmen”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

58.We learn from the text that corals depend on plants for________.
A.comfort B.light
C.oxygen D.food
根据第二段 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )的句子:“...taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe.”
59.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss

Passenger pigeons ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) (旅鸽) once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群) so large that they darkened the sky for hours.
It was calculated ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons-a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundanc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an ever lasting supply and killed them by the mercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the stat ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.

Millions of years ag ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o there were many types of dinosaurs on the earth. Most dinosaurs were plant eaters. The Apatosaurus, for example, had a long thin neck so that it could eat leaves from trees. Other dinosaurs were meat eaters. The Tyrannosaurus Rex (霸王龙)killed smaller dinosaurs for food.
Dinosaurs we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re real animals that once lived on the earth, but they died out about 65 million years ago. The disappearance of the dinosaurs is in some way a great mystery (谜). Some scientists think that the climate changed suddenly. Fossils (化石) of trees tell us the temperature dropped a lot and that it got suddenly much colder. Perhaps the dinosaurs were too slow to change with the climate.
A new idea i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s that a meteor (流星)crashed into the earth. Scientists discovered a place in Mexico where they think the meteor crashed. They think that there was a lot of dust from the meteor. The dust landed on the plants. Also the dust blocked the sun's light for as long as five years. Many animals, including dinosaurs, were plant eaters, and perhaps the dust killed them. This means there was nothing left for meat eating dinosaurs to eat, and they died out. But, as many animals from that time didn't die,we are not 100% sure what really happened.

Strangely, each of these islands has its own particular kinds of tortoises. There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands, and each kind is slightly different from the other.
Hundreds of y ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ears ago, thousands of tortoises were around these islands. However, all that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived in 1535, crews would seize as many tortoises as they could. They would roll the tortoises onto their backs when they were brought onto the ships. The tortoises were completely helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used for soups and stews. Almost 100,000 tortoises were carried off in this way.
The tortoises fac ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed other problems, too. Soon after the first ships, settlers arrived, bringing pigs, goats, donkeys, dogs and cats. All of these animals ruined life for the tortoises. Donkeys and goats ate all the plants that the tortoises usually fed on, while the pigs, dogs and cats ate thousands of baby tortoises each year. Within a few years, it was hard to find any tortoise eggs—or even any baby tortoises.
Finally, in the 1950 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s, scientists decided that something must be done. The first part of their plan was to remove as many cats, dogs and other animals as they could from the islands. Next, they tried to make sure that more baby tortoises would be born. This slow, hard work continues today, and, thanks to it, the number of tortoises is now increasing every year. Perhaps these wonderful animals will not disappear after all.

Dear Editor,
I've just learnt ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the news online about killing Siberian tigers and I am so sorry. I think Siberian tigers must be protected well, or they will die out. It's time that we took action to protect them from being killed.
It's said that the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )population of Siberian tigers is getting smaller and smaller. I think there are two main reasons for this. This first reason is that some people kill Siberian tigers for their skins and bones to earn money. The other reason is that too many trees have been cut down, which has destroyed the places where Siberian tigers used to live.
We should work t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ogether to make a pleasant home for both human beings and animals. I hope that the government should pass laws to protect Siberian tigers and punish the tiger hunters. Because protecting animals is protecting ourselves.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
