Cultural Notes
Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519) was born near Florence, Italy. When he was 14, he went to work in an art workshop, where he learnt sculpture and painting. By the time he was twenty, he was deemed(认为,视为)qualified to set up his own workshop. Over the years, he received increasingly more important commissions, first to produce artistic work, and later in military engineering and architecture. In 1516, he was hired as an artist by the king of France. As he lay dying, it is said that he lamented(哀悼)that he had not fully pursued his art. It is estimated that he produced 20- 30 thousand pages of notes during his lifetime. Many were beautifully illustrated, and a large selection of these still exist.
Cultural Notes
The Mona Lisa is believed to be a painting of an Italian woman named Lisa del Giocondo (1479- 1542). She was
the wife of a wealthy silk merchant in Florence, and the painting was probably commissioned by her husband. As
was typical, da Vinci was not able to complete the painting in a timely fashion, so when he went to France he took the
uncompleted painting with him. At da Vinci's death, it became the property of the French king. It is an oil painting on wood, and measures 77 cm x 53 cm.
