Step 1: You will need: · A cotton shirt · Two pots · Wires · Safety glasses · Scissors(剪子) · Pliers (剪子) · A plant!
We should buy a pot for $4, and a plant for $5.
Step 2: Cut a fire and form a circle in the center of each straightened wire. The diameter (直径) of the circle needs to match the diameter of the small pot at 1 inches from the base. Twist the circle to fix firmly its position. If needed, use a pair of pliers to form a tighter twist.

Step 4: Center the wire frame on the large pot, and insert the base of the small pot into the loop. Adjust (调整) the wire frame so that the wire frame and base of the small pot sit slightly below the lip of the large pot.
Step 5: For each end on the wire structure, cut the wire to a length that will securely hook (勾住) the lip of the large pot. Using pliers, bend the wire to form this circle. Then form and cut as necessary. Both the length and angle of each hook will have to be taken into account.
Step 6: Use the scissors to cut a strip of cloth from the T-shirt. Make sure to cut enough cloth so that the wick (灯芯) closely fits the diameter of the hole in bottom of the small pot. Divide the top part of the wick into three strips.

The evolution of butterflies continues very fast. Species with larger wingspans(翼幅) have expanded their range in high-latitude parts of North America as the climate has warmed, while smaller butterflies and those adapted to cold conditions have tended to decline.
Vaughn Shirey at Georgetown University in Washington DC and his colleagues built a computational model to analyse the presence of 90 butterfly species above 45 north in North America from 1970 to 2019.
The team analysed how shifting monthly minimum temperatures over the past 50 years may have affected the ranges of butterflies.
The monthly minimum temperatures increased by 0. 86℃ (1. 5°F), on average, across the study region from the 1970s to the 2010s. As temperatures rose, butterfly species with larger wingspans were more likely to spread out into a greater proportion of the study region. But for smaller butterflies, rising temperatures were linked with a a smaller number in the area over which they were found.
“It seems logical to assume that, if species with larger wingspans have the capacity to better travel to new suitable habitats, it gives those species an advantage in a changing climate,” says Yoan Fourcade at the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences in Paris.
Butterflies adapted to warmer temperatures also seemed to have dispersed(分散) more across the study region than those adapted to colder climates.
Climate change has been linked with a fall in some butterfly species, including the monarch (Danaus plexippus)in North America. But some appear to be adapting: a 2022 study found that British butterflies are steadily getting bigger in response to rising temperatures.
4. What is the focus of the article
A. The impact of climate change on butterflies. B. The migration patterns of butterflies.
C. The size of butterfly wingspans. D. The smaller number of butterflies.
5. What is the relationship between rising temperatures and smaller butterflies
A. Temperatures have little effect on smaller butterflies.
B. Smaller butterflies have increased in number.
C. Smaller butterflies have reduced in number.
D. Smaller butterflies have migrated to colder climates.
6. What advantage do species with larger wingspans have in a rising climate
A. They are better able to travel to new suitable habitats.
B. They are better adapted to colder climates.
C. They are more resistant to climate change.
D. They are more likely to disperse across.
7. What does the author emphasize about butterflies in the last paragraph
A. They are migrating to warmer climates. B. They are becoming smaller in size.
C. They are reducing in number. D. They are getting bigger.

Ho Feng Shan the Chinese Consul General in Vienna from 1938 to 1940, was recently recognized for his courageous actions during the race murder (屠杀). He received the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award at the annual dinner of the Holocaust Museum Houston on April 30th.
During his time as Consul General, Ho issued thousands of visas to Jewish refugees, allowing them to escape the fate of concentration camps. His efforts resulted in approximately 18, 000 Jewish refugees finding shelter in Shanghai between 1938 and 1940.
Ho's daughter, Ho Manli, accepted the award on behalf of her late father. She spoke about how proud she was of her father’s bravery and how important it is to remember his actions during such a dark period in history.

The development of artificial intelligence is happening rapidly, and two recent events high-light this trend. On May 10th, Google announced its plans to use machine-learning techniques to generate(生成) text in its existing products. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google's parent company Alphabet, stated that they are “reimagining all of our core products, including search.” This move is seen as a response to Microsoft's similar functionality on Bing.
The use of large language models in AI has been gaining momentum in recent years. These models allow computers to understand human language and generate text that is similar to what a human would write. The potential applications for this technology are vast, from improving search engines to creating more natural-sounding chatbots.
However, there are concerns about the ethical implications of AI. Many worry about the possibility for unfair influences in algorithms(算法) and the impact on jobs as automation becomes more popular. There are also fears about the misuse of AI in areas such as monitoring and conflict.
Despite these concerns, the race to develop and deploy AI panies like Google and Microsoft are investing heavily in this technology, and governments around the world are also taking notice. It remains to be seen how AI will shape our future, but it is clear that it will play an increasingly important role in our lives.
For English learners, understanding the basics of AI and its potential impact on society is essential knowledge in today's world. As AI continues to evolve, it is likely that more and more aspects of our lives will be affected by this technology.
12. What is Microsoft using large language models to do
A. Understand human language. B. Improve its search engine, Bing.

14. What are the third concerns about the ethical implications of AI
A. The possibility for unfair influences B. The misuse of AI in areas.
C. The race to develop. D. The impact on jobs.
15. What is the author's attitude towards AI as an English learner
A. Unconcerned. B. Unhappy. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

But before they can take that advice, they’ll have to be open to listening to it. ____18____ Every time you give your teens constructive criticism, you give them an opportunity to grow and change.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a. m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.

Dear Helen
I am not quite myself this term. I am under pressure from both my friends and study. One of my classmates named Danny doesn’t like me.
He speaks ill of me behind my back every now and then, so many classmates don’t like me. I am not feeling good every time I walk into the classroom. I sometimes prefer to stay at home to avoid students’ eye sights.
It bothers me so much that I can’t focus on my study. I did a bad job in my mid-term examination. I failed in my poor subject Maths and even get a low mark on my advantaged subject English.
I am such a loser both in interpersonal relationship and study. With no courage to face my classmates, I don’t want to go to school. What should I do
Yours sincerely,
Ben

【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. D

Ho Feng Shan, the Chinese Consul General in Vienna from 1938 to 1940, was recently recognized for his courageous actions during the race murder (屠杀).
Lotte Marcus, a Jewish refuge whose family obtained visas from the Chinese Consulate, told her story by video. Her family escaped to Shanghai and she spent more than seven years there before heading to the US. “14 people of our family who did not leave, were all killed,” said Marcus, who called Ho “the bright light in the darkness of the race murder”.

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)

Dear Helen,
I am not quite myself this term.
What should I do
Yours sincerely,
Ben
Dear Ben,

Yours sincerely,
Helen
【答案】Dear Ben,
I’m sorry to hear that you are going through a tough time at school, especially when someone is speaking ill of you behind your back.
Firstly, don’t let the negative opinions of others define your self-worth. I suggest trying to communicate with them directly. It may be uncomfortable, but sometimes it can help improve the situation.
Regarding your studies, try not to let the stress get in the way of your academic performance. It may be helpful to seek out extra support or resources, such as a tutor or study group.
Remember to be kind to yourself and take care of your mental health. Focus on your own growth and progress, and things will eventually fall into place.
Yours sincerely,
Helen
