Pre-reading:
Step1: Revision
A quiz game.
Ss tell their favourite animals by describing them with a few sentences, then Ss guess what they are.
Step2: Lead-in and presentation
1) Guess what Miss Li’s favourite animal is.
They are beautiful black and white animals. They look like bears. They live only in China. Their greatest hope is to take a colour photo. What are they? (Giant pandas)
2) Teach the new words
T teaches Ss the following new words and phrases with the help of pictures:
bamboo(s), bamboo forest, bamboo leaves, live on, reserve, in danger, take action.
While-reading:
Step3: Task1: skimming
Ss read the whole article quickly and try to match the paragraphs with the correct main ideas.
Step4: Task2: careful reading (Para.1-3)
1) A short video about the growth of giant pandas
2) Ss read Part1 carefully and try to finish the table below

3) T encourages Ss to tell the growth of Xi Wang with the information above.
Step5: Task3: careful reading (Para. 4)
1) Ss read para.4 and find giant pandas’ serious problems.
a) It’s difficult for pandas to have babies, and many baby pandas die when they are very young.
b) Giant pandas mainly live on a special kind of bamboo. However, the bamboo forests are becoming smaller and smaller.
Step6: Task4: careful reading (Para. 5-6 )
1) T have the Ss read the last part in details and find the actions we can take to protect giant pandas.
a) Help pandas have more babies.
b) Build more panda reserves.
c) Make laws to protect pandas.
2) More advice on “can do ”and “can’t do”:
T gives Ss more advice on protecting giant pandas.
Step7: Practice
1) An interview on TV
T put part2 and part3 into a dialogue to help Ss practice the “problems and actions”
2) A discussion about “Where there is Xi Wang, there is hope. ”
After-reading:
Step8: A further discussion
First, T shows Ss some pictures about some animals kept in cages, and ask Ss whether they are happy or not, then lead Ss to discuss the topic---“Which is better for them, living in the cages in the zoo or living in the wild? Why?”, T divides Ss into groups of 4 and encourages them to share their ideas with each other , finally T help Ss come to the conclusion.
