根据Who can apply 部分中“Past applicants have included: current UQ students, students from other universities, including international students, professionals, adults from a range of backgrounds, high-school students (过去的申请者包括:昆士兰大学在读学生,来自其他大学的学生(包括国际学生),专业人士,来自不同背景的成年人,高中生)”可知,过去的申请者是各种各样的。
根据How to apply部分中“If you are a current UQ student, you can access your student account to enroll. (如果你现在是昆士兰大学的学生,你可以访问你的学生账户注册。)”可知,昆士兰大学本科生通过登录学生账户申请。故选B项。
3.细节理解题。根据Summer Semester important dates表格中“Application for cross-institutional enrollment due (跨机构招生申请截止)”对应的“Tuesday 31 October, 2023 (2023年10月31日星期二)”可知,对于非昆士兰大学的学生来说,2023年10月31日是一个特别重要的时间点。故选A项。
B
When you think about it, food is an important part of our lives. Family gatherings center around food and the celebration of major life events and milestones involves food in one way or another. The same holds true for us here on the Space Station. Food is important and ends up usually being a topic of discussion for almost every crew.
The food that we have here on ISS has to meet many different requirements. What about variety How do you meet all of the peculiarities of the people that you come across, especially when they are from different cultures What about the logistics(物流)of getting the right food here at the right time So there are a couple of different questions you have to consider when you talk about food and long-duration space flight.
On the U.S. side we have gone to a standard menu, meaning that every 16 days you start over with the same menu. To compensate the crews, we are allowed to pick one“preference”container which consists of our pick of anything on the U. S. menu list. This allows us some variety in our menu, with the choices up to us. One of the desirable options for any crew is to make sure that enough tortillas(墨西哥玉米粉薄饼) get on board. You can do so much with a tortilla; it becomes the vehicle with which to eat almost anything.
Our food also comes packaged in many ways. But no matter what the form of the food though, you still have the same problem eating it- - you do not want it flying away from you and making a mess when you open it up. In this case a little bit of extra water is extremely helpful. It keeps the food kind of sticking together and to the package and to your spoon. Small things do escape from time to time, but we really try hard to minimize the random flying food problem. That is enough for now! Next time I will write about how to cook in space.
4.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.A food magazine. B.An astronaut’s journal.
C.A sci-fi handbook. D.A space history website.
5.What does the underlined word “peculiarities“ mean in paragraph 2
A.Ambitious targets. B.Similar requests.
C.Unusual habits. D.Harsh conditions.
6.What is the author’ s purpose in mentioning tortillas
A.To illustrate the preference container . B.To give an example of standard menu.
C.To advocate tortillas to the readers. D.To show the variety of food options.
7.What can be inferred about eating in space
A.Food packaging is optional. B.Sufficient water helps transport food.
C.Flying food problem is unavoidable. D.Eating in space is easier than most imagine.
【答案】4.B 5.C 6.A 7.C
根据第一段中的“The same holds true for us here on the Space Station. (对于在空间站的我们而言也是如此。)”, 以及最后一段中的“Next time I will write about how to cook in space. (下次我会写一写在太空烹饪的事情。)”可以得知,本文以第一人称来陈述太空饮食方面的内容,因此本文应该是一篇宇航员的太空日志。故选B。
5.词义猜测题。第二段第一句提到“The food that we have here on ISS has to meet many different requirements. What about variety ”(我们在国际空间站上的食物必须满足许多不同的要求。多样性怎么样 )以及后文中“the people that you come across, especially when they are from different cultures”(当你遇到不同文化背景的人时)由此判断,在太空中可能会遇见文化习俗不一样的宇航员,每一个人的习惯都有可能不一样的,对于“你”可能是很正常的,但是对于别人而言有可能不寻常,因此可以得知,peculiarities的意思应是“不寻常的习惯”。故选C。
6.推理判断题。第三段第二、三句提到“To compensate the crews, we are allowed to pick one“preference”container which consists of our pick of anything on the U. S. menu list. This allows us some variety in our menu, with the choices up to us. ”(为了补偿机组人员,我们可以选择一个“偏好”集装箱,其中包括我们在美国菜单上选择的任何东西。这让我们在菜单上有了一些多样性,选择由我们自己决定。)可以得知,美国宇航员在太空中更喜欢吃玉米粉薄饼,因此作者提到tortillas的用意是举例解释宇航员们的“preference container(偏好食盒)”。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Small things do escape from time to time, but we really try hard to minimize the random flying food problem. (细小食物的确时不时逃逸出来, 但我们尽力把食物乱飞的情况降至最低。)”可以得知,食物乱飞的情况是不可避免的。故选C。

【导语】这是一篇应用文。主要介绍了一张名为笑脸卡的卡片,并讲述了如何申请笑脸卡、笑脸卡使用的注意事项和背后的负责团队。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“When using a Smile Card, remember not to just hand it out by itself. The idea is to do something kind for someone and then leave the Smile Card behind(当你使用微笑卡片时,请记住不要单独分发。这个想法是为别人做些好事,然后把微笑卡留下)”可知,当做了一件善意的事情之后,可以留下一张微笑卡片。C项“You’ve ordered lunch for a poor friend.”(你给一个穷朋友点了午餐。)
根据表格部分下的小字“Please tell us what inspired you to order Smile Cards, and give us an example of a kind act you’d like to do using them(请告诉我们是什么激发了你订购微笑卡片,并给我们一个你想用它们做的善良行为的例子)”可知,在申请这张卡片时需要填写一些信息让负责团队对申请者申请卡片的意图和申请者意向为人们做哪些事情有所了解,可知,要订购微笑卡片,你必须告诉别人你会为别人做什么。故选D。
根据文章第二段“so that they know someone reached out to them, and that they are invited to pay-forward the kindness and keep the ripples going!(这样他们就会知道有人向他们伸出了援助之手,他们也会被邀请将这种善意传递下去,让涟漪继续传播下去)”可知,给予卡片者在给卡片前会为被给予者做一件小事,以此传递这张卡片让善意被传递下去。故选A。

Ida Nelson was relaxing herself in her sister’s sauna (桑拿室) when she heard the sound of a small airplane circling the nearby airport.
It was 11: 30 at night in a remote village with a population of 70, and, as she told the newspaper reporter, “Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong.” Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem — the airports runway lights were out. Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her jeep, and floored it to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually.
“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up,” Nelson told the reporter. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s urgent mission — it was a helicopter, there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in another city.
Nelson had a plan. Driving her jeep to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village — 32 of them.
Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas. Following directions from the helicopter pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane immediately took off again. Her illness was never publicly known, but she has since been recovered.
Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was only a small deed.
4.What problem did the helicopter encounter
A.Its lights went out by accident.
B.It made noise as it ran out of fuel.
C.It didn’t arrive at the scheduled time.
D.It could not spot the runway at night.
5.What does the underlined word “urgent” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.instant B.normal C.final D.impossible
6.What can we conclude from the passage
A.The girl has been in the hospital since her illness was reported.
B.The creative thought and the sense of duty of Nelson led to the final landing.
C.The villagers gathered so quickly because they were awake and ready to help.
D.The helicopter was to transport the girl from the local hospital to another one.
7.What does this passage want to tell the readers
A.No way is impossible to courage.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.A small act of kindness makes a big difference.
D.Where there is a wisdom, there is effectiveness.
【答案】4.D 5.A 6.B 7.C
根据第二段中“Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem — the airports runway lights were out.(Nelson和她的妹妹跳出桑拿房,跑到窗前,看到了问题——机场跑道上的灯灭了)”和倒数第二段中“The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely.(直升机做了最后的降落,在前灯的指引下安全着陆)”可知,机场跑道的灯灭了,所以直升机无法在夜间找到跑道的位置,故选D。
根据划线词后“it was a helicopter, there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in another city(这是一架直升机,要把一名身患重病的当地女孩送到280英里外另一个城市最近的医院)”可知,直升机的任务很紧急,urgent意为“紧急的,迫切的”,故选A。
根据第四段“Nelson had a plan. Driving her jeep to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village — 32 of them.(Nelson有一个计划。她把吉普车开到跑道尽头,把车灯照在路上,让飞机跟着。好主意,但这还不够。因为需要更多的光线,所以一个邻居几乎给村里的每户人家打了电话——一共32户)”和第五段中“Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas. Following directions from the helicopter pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely.(20分钟内,20辆车抵达机场,许多司机还穿着睡衣。按照直升机驾驶员的指示,汽车在跑道的一侧排成一排。直升机做了最后的降落,在前灯的指引下安全着陆)”可知,Nelson想出在跑道上闪耀车灯来指引直升机降落的主意,并和众多邻居一起使得直升机安全降落,故是Nelson这个有创意的想法和责任心使得直升机安全降落,故选B。
7.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was only a small deed.(如果没有他们,这个女孩可能不会成功。然而,对Nelson来说,这只是一件小事)”可知,Nelson的一个小小的举动救了一位孩,故本文想要告诉我们小小的善举也会产生重大影响。故选C。

William Lindesay, renowned Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled across the globe by the back paths, providing their sons Jimmy and Tommy a unique environment for personal growth.
Sunhats, backpacks, sneakers and trekking poles — these are the day-to-day must-haves of the family. This East-meets-West couple started traveling while their younger son was still in nappies in 2003. Most of their trips, most of which are far from the hot spots recommended by travel guidebooks, seem more rigorous than leisurely — heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable, but there’s a feel-good factor when you pass a test of some kind,” Lindesay wrote in the family’s newly published travel memoir Pages of Discovery.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.
Children in this international family did not have the same pressure to perform on school tests, but they had “homework” on the road. Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores, will pay dividends in later life.
These experiences certainly shaped their sons’ characters and influenced their chosen study at university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular. They are now planning to follow in their father’s footsteps with a new 4,500-km hike on the Great Wall.
“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries,” Jimmy says.
4.Which of the following best describes their trips across the world
A.Hard and risky. B.Unique yet stressful.
C.Challenging and educational. D.Leisurely yet rewarding.
5.What can we infer about the couple from the text
A.They think little of school education.
B.They believe travel provides real education.
C.They ask their sons to follow their career path.
D.They require their sons to perform well on school tests.
6.What do the underlined words “pay dividends” mean in paragraph 5
A.Bring advantages. B.Pay a price.
C.Improve scores. D.Make mistakes.
7.What does the family’s story tell us
A.Good company on the road is the shortest cut.
B.Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.
C.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
D.It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books.
【答案】4.C 5.B 6.A 7.D
根据第二段中“Most of their trips, most of which are far from the hot spots recommended by travel guidebooks, seem more rigorous than leisurely — heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.(他们的大部分旅行都远离旅游指南推荐的热门景点,似乎比在蒙古沙漠中学习遗产、在新西兰徒步旅行53公里、在英国攀登三座山峰一天以及从北京到莫斯科的六天火车旅行等悠闲的旅行要严格得多)”和第三段中“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable(真正的旅行可能是艰难的、不确定的、不舒服的)”可知,他们的很多旅行是具有挑战性的;根据倒数第二段中“These experiences certainly shaped their sons’ characters and influenced their chosen study at university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular.(这些经历无疑塑造了他们儿子的性格,并影响了他们选择在大学学习。一个读世界历史,另一个读国际关系。这两兄弟还对历史遗迹,尤其是长城很感兴趣)”可知,这些旅行经历对孩子来说有教育意义,故选C。
5.推理判断题。根据第四段“Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.(Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,他说,孩子们可能在学校考试中取得好成绩,但在遥远的地方,在不同的语言、文字、政治结构和宗教信仰的外部世界的经历,才是真正的试验场)”和第五段中“Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores, will pay dividends in later life.(Wu让她的儿子们写旅行日记,收集车票,绘制地图,总结旅行小贴士。她说,这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩,但会在以后的生活中带来好处)”可知,这对夫妇认为旅行能提供真正的教育,故选B。
6.词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips.(Wu让她的儿子们写旅行日记,收集车票,绘制地图,总结旅行小贴士)”可知,Wu让儿子这样做应是对他们有好处,结合画线词所在句中“She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores (她说,这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩)”中though表达的让步语气可知,此处指这样的习惯虽然可能不会直接提高考试成绩,但会在以后的生活中带来好处,pay dividends意为“带来好处”,故选A。
根据第四段“Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.(Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,他说,孩子们可能在学校考试中取得好成绩,但在遥远的地方,在不同的语言、文字、政治结构和宗教信仰的外部世界的经历,才是真正的试验场)”和最后一段中“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries(我的父母把世界看作一个大教室,我和哥哥是最大的受益者)”可知,Lindesay非常重视课堂外的学习,让孩子们在旅行中受益,故这家人的故事告诉我们“读万卷书不如行万里路”,故选D。

On November 11, a woman from the United Kingdom set out to explore Antarctica, in an attempt to become the first female explorer to cross the continent alone and unsupported.
Preet Chandi aims to cover more than 1,100 miles in a journey that will likely take 70 to 75 days. Pulling all her supplies on a sled(雪橇) called a pulk, which weighed more than 250 pounds at the start of her journey, the 33-year-old will battle temperatures of minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit and wind speeds up to 60 miles per hour.
Chandi—also called“Polar Preet”—set a record last year as the first woman of color to complete an unsupported expedition(探险) to the South Pole. She finished the journey in 40 days—just two days longer than Joanna Davidson of Sweden, who holds the female world record.
“A lot of people tell me I don’t look like a polar explorer,”Chandi told BBC News’ Sandish Shoker last year before the trek. “It’s considered out of the norm for an Asian woman to do this—it’s different. And that’s part of the reason why I wanted to do this—for people who don’t fit a certain image.”
Chandi grew up in an Indian Sikh community in England and joined the Army Reserve at age 19. In 2012, she graduated from college, becoming the first in her family to earn a degree.
After running her first half-marathon at 20 years old, Chandi’s appetite for greater challenges started to grow. She has been on hiking and climbing trips across the world, including in Kenya, Morocco, Mexico, Peru, Iceland and Nepal. Earlier this year, she completed the Marathon des Sables, a week-long, 156-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert.
She currently serves in the British Army, organizing training for injured soldiers.
“We are extremely proud to have such a remarkable ambassador, “the General Staff Sharon Nesmith says. ”Captain Chandi has the qualities we seek of all who serve—courage, commitment and the desire to be the best we can be. ”
4.What made Chandi decide on the trip to Antarctica
A.Seeking financial support. B.Sticking to a promise.

A few years ago, I spared a couple of hours from busy academic learning to work in a video store on a daily basis. There was something in the elderly woman’s behavior that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, the woman moved with deliberation, and there was no hesitation in her gestures. And she had a job to do.
The elderly woman had walked into the store along with a younger woman who guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, checking her watch every few seconds. The older woman detached from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled on a crumpled (皱巴巴的) piece of paper. The title was a bit difficult to understand. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality.
Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d departed this life last Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I narrated its floor plan. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation. We found the movie, and I complimented (称赞) her on her choice. Then, reluctantly, I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.
I walked over to the younger woman. “Is that your mom ” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah.” There was annoyance in her reply, half sigh and half complaint. Still watching the mother, I said, “Mind some advice ” “Sure,” said the daughter. I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she’s gone, it’s the little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I used to let it slip. I know.”
4.What does the underlined sentence “she had a job to do” in paragraph 1 mean
A.She was thinking of what to buy. B.She had a regular job in the store.
C.She wanted to buy a DVD. D.She wanted to ask for help.
5.Which word can best describe the daughter’s behaviors towards her mom
A.Impolite. B.Uncaring. C.Tolerant. D.Considerate.
6.What can we learn about the author
A.She was ill-informed of quality movies.
B.She was a full-time employee in the store.
C.She regretted not accompanying her mom.
D.She criticized the younger woman seriously.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.Lend a helping hand to elderly people B.Mother is not what we can substitute
C.The past cannot be called back again D.Always treasure the ones you love
【答案】4.C 5.B 6.C 7.D

It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull, Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” Sprinting, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only tightened its grip on Buddy. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open, but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting—punching the bear over and over around its snout and eye. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were dangling. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He scooped up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window. “I just stood there,” he said, watching as Buddy’s ears were stapled back on and skin flaps were stitched, and tubes were inserted into his head to drain fluid.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do ” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”
24.What is the text mainly about
A.A demanding surgery. B.A regular routine.
C.A fearless pet dog. D.A daring rescue.

B.To indicate the obesity of the bear.
C.To prove the excitement of Benham.

26.How was the dog finally saved from the bear
A.Benham bumped into the beast with dropped shoulder.
B.Benham forced open the beast’s mouth with locked jaw.
C.Benham crushed the beast’s mouth and nose repeatedly.
D.Benham finally conquered the beast by grabbing its throat.

Meet Incredible Conservation Heroes Saving Wildlife from Extinction
Anne Savage
Dr. Savage founded a conservation program to protect cotton-top tamarins She pioneered in the development of new technologies to study the animal in the Colombian forest. She also helped conduct a study that found only 7,500 individuals remained. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature changed the classification of cotton-top tamarins from Endangered to Critically Endangered, which brought the species to more people’s notice.
Elena Bykova
Having majored in biology, Bykova has a good knowledge of the saiga antelope As Executive Secretary of the Saiga Conservation Alliance, an international organization, Bykova works to save the antelope. Illegal shooting is the single biggest threat, and Bykova concentrates on raising public awareness of the danger, finding alternative livelihood opportunities for local communities, and protecting saiga habitats.
Jeanne Tarrant

Over the years, she has helped put the spotlight on many highly threatened species of frogs that face extinction due to habitat loss, climate change, and hunts by their animal enemies. No wonder she is called the “Frog Lady” of South Africa!
Marilyn Connell
Living only in the Mary River of Queensland, the Mary River turtle (龟) takes in oxygen in two ways. Being hunted by other wildlife is the Mary River turtle’s biggest threat. Connell and her team investigate the threats to the species and take measures to protect the eggs and newborns from being hunted, ensuring the species has a chance to survive.

Before your book drive
Identify your volunteers. Recruit a committee of volunteers to assist you with planning and pick-ups on collection day.
Decide on the logistics
●Determine where to hold the book drive. Good locations include: small retail (零售) businesses or local schools.
You can ask businesses all over your area to collect books for the drive.
●Choose an appropriate time to hold the book drive. Join forces with an already-scheduled community event, or draw on a national celebration.
●At each collection location, ask for approval from management, and place boxes in a highly visible area.

●Determine the length of your book drive. A typical one lasts2-3 weeks.
●Select who is going to receive the books, and promote them in your other advertising efforts.
●Organize your materials. You’ll need boxes to distribute to businesses, storage space for the collected books and flyers (传单) to advertise your drive.
●Plan a kick-off event. Host a party, and ask each attendee to bring a book.

I AM … MR TREBUS
Some years ago, an 80-year-old man hit the headlines when the local council tried to force him out of his own house in London. Mr. Trebus, who’d had to leave his hometown in Poland after Germany invaded at the beginning of the Second World War, later served as a tank commander in the British army. After he settled in London, he began collecting all kinds of things. He would tour the local neighbourhood recovering things from bins that others had seen as mere rubbish. He then took this junk home and sorted it into piles of similar things: a room packed with vacuum cleaners, a corner for old doors, another for windows. He also managed to acquire practically every record Elvis Presley ever made. By the time the council came to evict (驱逐) the old man, he had just a tiny space in his kitchen to live in, surrounded by piles of old newspapers and children’s toys. Yet he resisted eviction, arguing that everything he kept was useful. He was cleverly over-the-top, but let’s face it, there’s a bit of Mr Trebus in most of us. How many collectors do you know Personally, I have boxes of old comics in the attic, which I don’t read, but can’t get rid of. Who hasn’t made some impulse purchase, which has then been left lying in some cupboard for years How many of you have a drawer like mine in the kitchen: a drawer full of caution and fear, stuffed with good intentions; packed with optimism and meanness and, of course, all rubbish In my drawer, there are a number of instructions and guarantees for things I’ve bought over the years, just in case they break down or I forget how to use them. There are also a large number of dead batteries which I’ve been meaning to take to the recycling centre and a number of leaflets — one about a local gym I still haven’t joined. There are various odd screws, nails and pins (I’d have to buy new packs if I didn’t keep them), a broken cup (I must buy some glue to stick it back together), and finally a large number of foreign coins (they might be collector’s items one day, they might be valuable).
COMMENTSRedyellowblueCome on! Get a life! Just throw it all out!Dani79Nice post. On top of my cupboard, there’s a box of stuff I did when I was at primary school. I read your blog and I thought ‘what do I need it for ’ But then I looked at those cute drawings, my funny handwriting and … I couldn’t get rid of it and put the box away again. Don’t feel guilty about it!TimR1975So we’re all a bit like Trebus, but it’s difficult to sympathise when you live with someone like my flatmate, who has 300 pairs of shoes. Are you suggesting I should just put up with it ProshrinkI am a psychologist and I read your post with interest. I think you’re very brave to admit that you have something in common with Mr Trebus, and I hope your admission helps a few more people think about the issue. Actually, around one in twenty people has a problem like this. Research suggests it’s at least partly genetic, but if we’re honest, we’re all potential hoarders. We all want to keep things we think we may one day need—and we all want things to stay as we remember them too. It’s a very fine line.
1.Why does the blogger use “I AM … MR TREBUS” as the title of the blog
A.Both Mr Trebus and he survived a terrible war.
B.He has known Mr Trebus for a long time.
C.Mr Trebus and he might have something in common.
D.He would like to be another Mr Trebus.
2.________ take a negative attitude towards the blogger’s behaviour.
A.Dani79 and TimR1975 B.Dani79 and Proshrink
C.Redyellowblue and Proshrink D.Redyellowblue and TimR1975
3.“Hoarders” refer to those who ________.
A.love storing things B.admit being dishonest
C.throw away unnecessary things D.are interested in psychology
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A
Get a life! Just throw it all out!(来吧!潇洒一回!全扔了吧!)”和TimR1975所说的“So we’re all a bit like Trebus, but it’s difficult to sympathise when you live with someone like my flatmate, who has 300 pairs of shoes. Are you suggesting I should just put up with it (所以我们都有点像特雷伯斯,但当你和我的室友住在一起时,你很难同情他,他有300双鞋。你是在建议我就这么忍着吗?)”可推知,这两个人对博主的行为持否定的态度。故选D项。
3.词句猜测题。根据“hoarders”一词后面的句子“We all want to keep things we think we may one day need — and we all want things to stay as we remember them too.(我们都想保留我们认为有一天可能会用到的东西——我们也都希望东西保持在我们记忆中的样子)”可知,hoarder在此处的意义为“囤积者;贮藏者”。故选A项。

A.Ambitious targets. B.Similar requests.
C.Unusual habits. D.Harsh conditions.
6.What is the author’ s purpose in mentioning tortillas
A.To illustrate the preference container . B.To give an example of standard menu.
C.To advocate tortillas to the readers. D.To show the variety of food options.
7.What can be inferred about eating in space
A.Food packaging is optional. B.Sufficient water helps transport food.
C.Flying food problem is unavoidable. D.Eating in space is easier than most imagine.

Dear Tommy,
I am Ole Orvér, Finnair’s chief commercial officer. It’s my pleasure to warmly welcome you back to the skies with Finnair. I’d like to reflect on some of the developments that we hope you find exciting and helpful:
●This summer season you can fly with Finnair to over 70 European and five US destinations. In Asia, we serve eight cities, including Guangzhou and newly added Mumbai starting 6 August. We operate over 300 daily flights and I’m excited about the addition of Seattle and Dallas to our US network.

●Finnair Plus turned 30 in May. We are committed to developing the programme further to serve you in the best possible way. To make your flight bookings smoother, we recently upgraded the experience of booking award flights in the Finnair app.

The bridges
Irabu Bridge is the longest toll-free bridge in Japan. It connects Miyakojima and Irabujima, stretching for 3540m, drawing a gentle curve. The length of the bridge can also be read as“san go no shi ma,” meaning coral island in Japanese. Smaller bridges connect Irabu and Shimoji islands, giving visitors additional beach options. On Shimoji Island, there is a boardwalk around Tooriike, two dramatic marine ponds connected to each other and the sea by an underwater cave system.
Fresh island food

Frogs are astonishingly diverse and beautiful for Dr. Tarrant.

Follow these tips to start a book drive in your neighborhood or school.
●Determine what type of books you want to collect and what age group you are targeting. Your range can be as wide or narrow as you like.
During your book drive
●Motivate. Organize a competition to encourage friends, neighbors, other parents, club members to donate. Keep track of which location and which individual contributes the most books. Recognize the donors with certificates or awards.
●Spread the word. The most successful way to gather books is to ask your personal network to contribute. Make these requests in person or by phone. To reach a larger audience: Hang flyers in grocery stores and schools (with permission).
After your book drive
●Sort your books. Count the number of books you collected, and sort them by age range of where they will be donated.

Jim Metzner has spent nearly five decades documenting and sharing the sounds of the world, from immersive portraits of American cities to unforgettable moments with people and wildlife in varied places.
Now more people will be able to hear more of the world through Metzner’s tape. The Library of Congress announced earlier this month that it has acquired the full body of his life’s work. The recordings include soundscapes of every description from around the world and interviews with scientists, artists and local people. Whereas many recordists focus entirely on a single subject—nature, music or science —Metzner’s recordings convey various human experiences accompanied by the vast range of sounds from the natural world.
Metzner’s career began with a moment of realization in the 1970s, when he first ventured onto the campus of UMass Amherst equipped with a stereo recorder, microphone and ear phones. Metznerre called pushing the red button and hearing a lifelike symphony: a couple walking and talking nearby, a bicycle riding through gravel, a bird flying overhead, bells in the distance. “And I was going like, ‘Wow, this is amazing. What an extraordinary coincidence!’” he recalled. “But it wasn’t a coincidence--this stuff was happening all the time, I just hadn’t been paying attention to it. And it was the microphone and the recorder that said, ‘Wake up ... you live in a world of sound. Here it is.’And it was, like, handing it to me on a plate.”
Metzner continued to focus on those moments over the years. Now in his 7Os, Metzner isn’t hanging up his microphone quite yet. He tells NPR he’s grateful to the Library of Congress for preserving his life’s work, which he describes as a deep honor. But he also wants to make sure it’s actually being heard, not just “buried in an archive (档案室).”
He hopes more people will get to experience — and recognize the value -- of soundscapes, which he describes as “part of our natural heritage” and “the touchstones to our feelings.”
“You can go to a museum and see Diane Arbus’ photographs. You can see Rene Magritte’s paintings,” he adds. “Why not soundscapes ”
