Jordan knew he wanted to do something unique with his farmland. He wanted to win the local garden club’s “Yard of the Month” award. But he didn’t have the money to buy new trees, so he began by using bushes and shrubs (矮树苗) that a local nursery had thrown away—that looked dead to most people.
Because he worked days at a can factory, Jordan often tended his garden at night. Neighbors got used to seeing one little headlight as Jordan stood on a ladder, cutting and shaping his steadily growing bushes. Gradually, the shrubs took on different shapes. Jordan then began planting trees and using zip ties, coat hangers, PVC pipe, and even his wife’s old stockings to achieve the forms he wanted. “He has a way of manipulating plants to do things he wants them to do by training, bending, wiring, and clipping,” says a neighbor, “And the plants seem to bend to his will.”
Many professional gardeners are amazed by what Jordan has been able to achieve. “The garden itself was created from lack of knowledge,” says Jordan in his booming bass voice, “because I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to do this with plants. For one time in my life, ignorance paid off.”
Jordan’ attention to detail and his willingness to work hard have made him a local hero. He was the fist African American to win “Yard of the Month” honor from the local garden club. And more recognition followed: articles in major newspapers and appearances on well-known TV shows.
Jordan’s garden now includes about 400 species of plants and 150 shrubs in different shapes. On his front yard, four-foot-tall letters filled with bright red begonias (秋海棠) spell Love, Peace, and Goodwill. These are the principles Jordan lives by. A box for donations can be found on the property, but giving is optional. Jordan welcomes people who can’t afford to pay. He understands; he’s been there.
24.What does Jordan’s experience of building the garden tell us

For the last three nights I hadn't slept too well. I would wake up over an hour earlier than normal and then be unable to get back to sleep. I was a bit tired then when I went into my bedroom to watch a little television this evening. The nightly news was its usual horror show of hatred (仇恨), prejudice (偏见)and division. I turned it off and put on some music instead. I picked up a book and tried to read but could feel my eyelids getting heavier and heavier. Finally, I closed them and laid my book on my chest. A nap would be just what I needed.
After a while I felt something rousing me from my sleep. It was warm breath hitting me right in the face. I slowly opened my eyes and saw a long, sweet looking face covered in white and gold fur.
I smiled and said, “ Hello, Fluffy”. Suddenly my face was covered in dog kisses while his curled tail wagged (摇摆). I hugged his neck, petted his head, scratched his belly, and laughed as he continued to shower me with his love. I soaked it all in and thought to myself: If only we humans could love each other as purely and unconditionally as our dogs love us, what a wonderful world this would be. ”
Dogs are our best friends and greatest teachers of love. We should not ignore the lessons they teach. We should give our hearts freely, our love joyfully, and our kindness unconditionally. We should live our lives on the side of love. We should spend our days creating happiness and making this world a better place. We should see everyone no matter how they look or what they believe as our brothers and sisters. We should love ourselves and everyone else.

B.By giving some suggestions.
C.By making some decisions.
D.By making some comparisons.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.On the side of love
B.A dog’s love

Dasia Taylor has juiced about three beets in the last 18 months. The root vegetables she’s found provide the perfect dye (染料) for her invention; suture (缝合) thread that changes color, from bright red to dark purple, when a surgical wound becomes infected (感染的).
The 17-year-old student at Iowa City West High School began working on the project in October 2019, after her chemistry teacher Carolyn Walling shared information about state-wide science fairs with the class. As she developed her sutures, she won awards at several regional science fairs, before advancing to the national stage.
Healthy human skin is naturally acidic, with a pH around five. But when a wound becomes infected, its pH goes up to about nine. Changes in pH can be detected without electronics;many fruits and vegetables are natural indicators that change color at different pH levels.
“I found that beets changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. Bright red beet juice turns dark purple at a pH of nine. “That’s perfect for an infected wound.”
Next, Taylor had to find a suture thread that would hold the dye. She found ten different materials, including standard suture thread, and tested them, for how well they picked up and held the dye, and whether the dye changed color when its pH changed. She found that a cotton-polyester blend (涤棉混纺) checked all the boxes. After five minutes under an infection-like pH, the cotton-polyester thread changes from bright red to dark purple.
Kathryn Chu, the director of the Center for Global Surgery at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, focuses on improving equitable access to surgical care. “I think it’s amazing that this young high school scientist was inspired to work on a solution to address this problem,” the surgeon writes in an email. “A product that could detect early surgical site infections would be extremely valuable.”
32.Why did Dasia Taylor begin to work on her invention
A.To enter science fairs. B.To sell root vegetables.
C.To make juice to drink. D.To do her teacher’s research.
33.What is the purpose of paragraph 3
A.To explain how human body functions well.
B.To provide scientific support for the invention.
C.To prove the possibility of avoiding infection.
D.To show the significance of the suture thread.
34.What did Dasia Taylor do to get a suture thread to hold the dye
A.She produced a new thread. B.She turned to Kathryn Chu.
C.She tested different materials. D.She mixed ten thread materials.
35.What can we know about Kathryn Chu
A.She shows inventors a new research direction.
B.She was inspired by Dasia Taylor to contribute.
C.She once overlooked the access to surgical care.
D.She speaks highly of Dasia Taylor’s invention.

Travel is not only beneficial to our minds, bodies, and souls, but it will be important to many countries and communities that rely on tourism dollars to make ends meet. Now I’d like to go a bit more in depth with strategies for travelers to leave less of a mess behind.
Pack with great care. How you pack sets the tone for how you will interact with the place you visit. Take as little as you can. Pack useful things like a large scarf or a quick-dry towel that can double as a blanket, pillow, or sun guard. 36
Save water and energy. Paying for the hotel room doesn’t mean you should waste the resources. 37 Take short showers and reuse towels. Turn off the lights and turn down the heat when you leave.
38 When you travel with least luggage, it’s not a big deal to hop on a bus, train, or ferry, all of which come with a smaller carbon footprint than private cars or plane rides. Public transportation routes give you a different view of a city and a culture, bring you into contact with locals, and add some colorful stories to your adventure.
Avoid single-use plastic. When hanging out, carry a cloth shopping bag for any purchases. 39 Avoid takeout meals that produce waste.
Leave reviews. 40 By taking the time to leave a thoughtful review that analyzes the eco-credibility of a place you’ve visited, you can help the business get recognized for its effort, and encourage other travelers to prioritize (优先处理) environmental standards.
A.Use public transportation.
B.Pack more in case of an emergency.
C.Keep your bag light and easy to carry.
D.Avoid using it as much as possible.
E.Treat it as you do in your own home.
F.Carry a water bottle to avoid single-use plastic bottles.

67.A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, “Do you love me ” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” “Well, then, give me your pearls.” “Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have my toy horse. Do you remember her She’s my favorite. Her hair is so soft, and you can play with it. You can have Ribbons if you want her, Daddy,” the little girl told her father. “No, that’s okay,” her father said and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. “God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams.”
Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her a story, Jenny was sitting on her bed and her lips were trembling. “Here, Daddy,” she said, and held out her hand. She opened it and her beloved pearl necklace was inside. She put it into her father’s hand. With one hand her father held the plastic pearls and the other he pulled a blue box out of his pocket. Inside of the box were real, genuine, beautiful pearls. He had had them all along. He was waiting for Jenny to give up the cheap stuff so he could give her the real thing.
