1. as well as 意为“也；还”，常用来连接两个并列的成分。如：
He can speak Spanish as well as English. 他会说西班牙语和英语。
2. large quantities of=a large quantity of, 意为“大量的”。如：

Six thousand years ago, people had no need to travel far because they could grow all their own food and make everything they needed. However, as society developed, so did the idea of trading goods with other countries. For centuries, humans have explored the world from the land to the sea and even to the outer space.
The Silk Road
The Silk Road was about 7,000 kilometres long and very dangerous. It was one of the oldest and most important land routes. Along this road, trade was conducted between China and Europe. Chinese businesses sent silk and spices to Europe, while gold, silver and horses were sent to China. However, nobody travelled the entire (整个)length of the Silk Road until Marco Polo in the 13th century.
The New World
At a time when European kingdoms were beginning to set up new trade routes, the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus planned to reach the East Indies by sailing westward. This finally received the support of the Spanish king and queen. They saw a chance to enter the spice trade with Asia through this new route. At last, Columbus discovered America where he thought the East Indies should be. This voyage was one of the most important expeditions.
Into Outer Space
The idea of space travel has fired people' s imaginations for centuries. However, it remained a dream until rockets powerful enough to lift objects into space were invented. The Space Age began in 1957 when Russia launched Sputnik-1, the first man-made satellite, closely followed by the United States' space satellite Explorer-1.
