Cherry Blossom Recycling
Hello Friends!
It's that time of year again for the yearly National Cherry Blossom Festival at National Mall and Memorial Parks to be held from March 21st to April 12th!We simply cannot pull off this big event without your help.Join us in the fun and excitement!
My name is Jason Cangelosi and I am working to recruit (招募) volunteers for the festival.We need your help with the recycling effort (回收活动).Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the park to enjoy these beautiful cherry trees.Lots of visitors mean lots of waste,much of which can be recycled.We want to make sure that happens, and we cannot do it without your help!
Volunteers will walk around the busiest areas of the festival and collect recyclables.Volunteers will also help remove full bags from recycling containers and replace them with empty ones.
We are looking for volunteers for weekdays during the festival, 9 am to noon.We need all the help we can get! Groups and individuals (个人) of all ages are welcome!

Elizabeth Macarthur was born in Devon, England on 14 August 1766.She came to Australia with her husband, John Macarthur ,an army officer ,in June 1790.She is best-known for her role in starting the wool industry in
Australia.
Shortly after arriving in New South Wales ,John was given 100 acres of land in Parramatta ,where he held a high position.He named the land Elizabeth Farm.In letters to her family in England ,Elizabeth described her house as “ a very excellent brick building ”.In 1805 John was given another large piece of land ,which he named
Camden Park.
In 1796 John bought his first merino sheep ,a breed (品种) that produces very good wool.Other farmers in the area also bought merino sheep,but they cross-bred them with other breeds,which affected the quality of wool.John and Elizabeth worked hard to build up their number of sheep , and by 1803 they had 4 , 000 almost- pure merinos.They sent their wool to England for the first time in 1807.
John Macarthur was an argumentative man who often argued with people in authority (权威).In 1808 he had an angry argument with the governor of New South Wales, and was forced to leave Australia for nine years.During that time Elizabeth not only took care of their seven surviving children ,but she also looked after the sheep at both Elizabeth Farm and Camden Park with great success.She wrote long letters to her husband in England ,giving him detailed reports ,and followed the instructions in his letters for further developing their business.
By the time Elizabeth's husband returned to Australia in 1817 ,New South Wales had become known in Britain and other countries as a centre for wool production.John Macarthur is usually referred to as the founder of the wool industry in Australia.However ,he could not have achieved his success without Elizabeth's help.

Rosalind Franklin was a British chemist ,who was born to a Jewish family in London in 1920.From an early age ,Franklin showed a great interest in mathematics and science.Although her father doubted about her path ,he sent her to St Paul's Girls' School ,one of the very few schools which taught science to girls.She passed her final exams and in 1938 ,went to Newnham College ,Cambridge ,where she studied chemistry.After three years ,she graduated though it wasn't until 1947 that Cambridge formally awarded B .A.degrees to women.
After graduating , Franklin worked first in Cambridge and later in the British Coal Utilisation Research Association.During the war,she also served for a period as an Air Raid Warden.After the war,Franklin travelled to Paris to work where she learnt X-ray diffraction techniques (衍射技术).In 1951,Franklin returned to England.She used her knowledge of X-rays to improve equipment at King's College.This actually enabled her team to produce very meaningful photos of DNA.When James Watson,a scientist working on his own DNA structure in Cambridge, saw these photos ,he said,“My jaw (下巴) fell open ,and my heartbeat began to race. ”
In a 1953 edition of Nature ,James Watson and Francis Crick published a paper on the structure of DNA , which had been informed by Franklin's photos.In the same edition ,Franklin published her data on DNA.Franklin was more careful about publishing a more accurate ( 精确 的) theory of DNA structure.She wished to see more experimental evidence.However,Watson and Crick were more confident and they announced in Feb. 1953 that they had found the secret of life.Franklin's data and photos were very important in their DNA theory.
In 1953,Franklin left for Birkbeck College,where she found a greater freedom.However,increasing ill health caused her to retire from work.Franklin died of cancer in 1958.
