I never wanted a dog, but now I’m so glad I have one.
About two years ago, my wife, Cathy, got a little dog with a face only a mother could love. We named her Gertie.
Gertie is the kind of dog that has to grow on you. So I decided that the dog would be trained. This didn’t quite go as planned. At 15 weeks old, she was nearly made to leave the Petsmart Training School. She spent every night lying in our bed-snoring (打鼾) so loudly that I hardly got a good night’s sleep. Then, about six months after she arrived, I felt that something in my heart was taking place, and I was unable to stop it. My behaviour (行为方式) began to change. I began to smile at people when passing them in a street. I returned (招手) from neighbours. I started calling my kids and, to my surprise, they started calling me. I even tried to speak to my grandchildren over the phone once. I even was glad to listen to laughter from a 10-month-old granddaughter. The point is that I was changing. My wife and I both agree that it is Gertie who has changed my behaviour.
Gertie is now nearly two years old and almost fully grown. I have come to like the pet little by little, though she is my wife’s dog.

A whooping crane is a large white North American crane famous for its loud call.
You may weigh more than a whooping crane, but maybe you aren’t taller than one! Whooping cranes can grow up to five feet tall. It makes them the tallest birds in North America. But even as tall as they are, whooping cranes weigh only about 15 pounds, because of their hollow (空心的) bones.
WHAT’S FOR DINNER
Whooping cranes live in wetlands, wet prairies, and fields. They’re not picky (挑剔的) about their meals—they have a mixed diet and eat small fish, and insects, as well as grains and marsh plants.
CALL OF THE WILD
Whooping cranes really like to ‘whoop it up’ when they want to attract a mate (伙伴). They call loudly and do what might look like a crazy dance to be eye—catching. They flap their wings, and move their heads from side to side quickly, jumping up and down.
A SPECIAL TRICK
These cranes are in danger, but scientists have used some very interesting tricks to help them stay alive. At first, they moved one group of cranes to Florida, but the cranes never learned to migrate (迁徙). When they got to Florida, they didn’t know how to fly back home. Scientists did all they could do to make the number of the cranes larger, so they used a special trick with another Florida group of cranes. Scientists “taught” the younger cranes to migrate by having them follow a very light airplane from Florida to Wisconsin. After the cranes gave birth to their babies in Florida, they’d follow the plane back to Wisconsin!
Some whooping cranes stay in Florida all year round, some fly from Florida to Wisconsin, and others fly from Texas to Canada and back again each year.
Whooping Cranes
____1____ areas A whooping crane is from North America.
Looks Whooping cranes can be five feet in ____2____. They weigh only about 15 pounds ____3____ their bones are hollow.
Food They ___4____ on small fishes, insects, grains and plants.
Qualities To catch a mate’s eyes, whooping cranes use a ____5____ voice, they also flap their wings and ____6___ their heads quickly.
Fun facts Scientists moved one group of cranes to Florida, but they were not ____7____ to fly back. Scientists wanted to have ____8___ cranes through hard work. Scientists used a plane to ___9____ the younger birds from Florida to Wisconsin. Some whooping cranes stay in Florida all year round, while ____10____ migrate each year.

Have you ever seen a koala somewhere Koalas, which are often called koala “bears”, are tree-climbing animals and are seen as national symbols of Australia. However, recently the Australian government has announced(宣布) that koalas are endangered animals across much of the country.
As a matter of fact, the country lost 30% of its koala population between 2018 and 2021, especially in New South Wales, according to a report from the Australian Koala Foundation. If nothing was done, New South Wales’ koalas would die out by 2050, a research in June 2020 said. “This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect the cute animals, “Josey Sharrad. a manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said seriously.
Koalas are dying out all over the country because of the climate(气候)change and the fast development of cities. People have seen some places that look like the moon — with dead and dying trees everywhere.
After WWF-Australia and the International Fund for Animal Welfare called on the government to announce koalas as endangered in April the government promised they would get more public support and protect koalas’ home — they live in the forests and woodlands.
The Australian government is now doing its best to collect money to protect koalas. On the one hand, it has spent S13 million in helping improve their living places. On the other hand, the government plans to spend another $36 million doing better health research and medical support to further help koala programs over the next four years.
“We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national symbol, “Environment Minister Susan Ley said.
