Video Time: Breaking Volunteering Boundaries
Lead-in
The Roma, sometimes called the Romani, are a nomad group which primarily lives in Europe, though many have immigrated to the Americas. They have their own distinct culture and language, although in some areas they have integrated themselves into their surrounding culture to various extents. There are no exact figures about the number of the Roma in the world, with guesses ranging up to 20 million people.
Historically, there has been much discussion on
where the Roma originally came from. For many
years, it was thought that they came from Egypt,
and for this reason they were called “Gypsies” —

a name that many, but not all, the Roma reject as an insult. Recent genetic findings indicate that they originally came from India, and eventually migrated to Europe. As outsiders, they have often been discriminated against, sometimes quite severely. Along with the Jews, they were one of the main groups targeted by the Nazis during the Second World War and depending upon the country they often do not have full rights and face repression even today.
