Human activities have caused severe narrowness in over half of the world’s largest lakes in the past 30 years causing risks to health, economies, and the environment, according to a study in the journal Science. The global decline in water storage equals to 17 times the capacity of Lake Mead, the largest lake in the U.S. Overuse of water for agriculture, development, and human-caused climate change are the main factors driving the decline, particularly in natural lakes. The accumulation of dirt and sand behind dams also contributes to the fall of water levels in lakes.
The findings showed “significant declines,” stated Fangfang Yao, the lead author of the study. “Roughly one-quarter of the world’s population lives in a basin with a drying lake,” Yao said. “So the potential impact could be significant.”
At least half of the decline in natural lakes was driven by human-caused climate change and overconsumption, which should remind water managers to improve protection and water efficiency, according to Yao. “If you know a lake is falling and that loss resulted from human activities, can we attach more importance to protection and improving water efficiency ” she said.
A climate change-driven drought and an ever-growing human thirst have continued to consume the two largest lakes in the U.S. Lake Powell and Lake Mead, which the Colorado River feeds. Lake Chad, one of Africa’s largest freshwater lakes which supplies nearly 40 million people with water, has shrunk (收缩) by an estimated 90% since the 1960s.
The United Nations regards access to safe drinking water as a universal human right, yet around 2 billion people lack access to it, and half of the global population experiences severe water shortage annually.
“Uncertainties are increasing,” said Richard Connor, the editor-in-chief of a U.N. water report published earlier this year at a press conference in late March, where world leaders met to try and find better strategies for managing the planet’s rare freshwater. “If we don’t address it, there will definitely be a global disaster.”
4. What can we learn about lakes from paragraph 1
A. They are being developed. B. They are becoming smaller.
C. They are causing climate change. D. They are damaged by human activities.
5. Which of the following is the main cause of water shortage
A. Severe environmental problems. B. Ever-increasing world’s population.
C. Climate change and overuse of water. D. Drought and an ever-growing human thirst.
6. What does the underlined word “universal” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Unique. B. Normal. C. Particular. D. Common.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To warn people to save water. B. To call on people to protect the environment.
C. To tell people water shortage in the world. D. To find better ways of managing freshwater.

Auerbach is one of Britain’s most famous painters, with works in every major national gallery. He has been a significant member of the post-war artists, including Bacon, Moore and Freud, whose creative originality made the UK a major pulse (脉搏) for art.
He has also, over the decades, invented a language of art that is recognisably his own, stretching beyond any comfort zone, shocking himself and, in turn, the viewer. A special structural formality in his portraits exists alongside free-flowing marks arising from intense observation. A must-see exhibition of nine paintings and 11 drawings, it’s small and, as it is in a commercial gallery, completely free.
Auerbach is today’s Grand Old Master of British Art, famously spending 365 days a year in the studio searching through paint for hard truths to give a picture of the human form. A personal connection exists between us as I took his photograph in his studio, marking our friendship lasting almost 40 years.
During the pandemic (流行病), for the first time in 70 years, Auerbach stopped having art models: so using himself. He stayed alone in his brown cave of a studio in Camden, North London and turned to self-portraits. Perhaps this is the ultimate portrait of the artist as an old man, as he explores his own face in a way he had previously avoided. “I didn’t find actual formal components (组成部分) of my head all that interesting when I was younger and less tired. Now that I’ve got bags under my eyes, things are sagging and so on, there’s more material to work with,” he writes.
Opposite to the belief that old age may not inspire great works, Auerbach’s late career proves otherwise. Like Titian, who influenced Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velázquez, Auerbach’s powerful expressiveness is shown in his painting. His new works give an example of the idea of late greats, proving his artistic skills even in his later years.
8. What do we know about Auerbach
A. He made art a major in the UK. B. He took pictures of the human form.
C. He created his own art language. D. He exhibited his paintings regularly.
9. Why did Auerbach draw himself during the pandemic
A. He stayed alone in the studio. B. He stopped using art models.
C. He found his head interesting. D. He wanted to explore his own face.
10. What can we infer about Auerbach in the last paragraph
A. He created great works in his old age. B. He took up painting with other artists.
C. He had opposite belief in great works. D. He had a deep influence on some artists.
11. From which is the text probably taken
A. A literature textbook. B. An art magazine.
C. A research paper. D. A science fiction.

It’s been about six months since ChatGPT was released to the public, and people everywhere realized just how powerful artificial intelligence already is. Suddenly, we started using the AI chatbot to do all sorts of things, like writing songs, taking the bar exam, and identifying bugs in computer code.
All the wonder and excitement about ChatGPT and other Al platforms comes mixed with anxiety: Will AI take our jobs Will it block democracy Will it kill us all Serious people are asking these questions. Just this week, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, testified before Congress and called for regulation (规定) of AI systems.
But there is a glimmer of hope—in the form of an economic study. The study looked at the customer service department of a big software company, and it found that ChatGPT made workers much more productive. More interesting, most of those gains came from less skilled workers, while the more skilled workers showed only slight improvement. Put in other words, Al narrowed the productivity gap between lower skilled workers and workers with more skills. This finding is very different from previous findings about the effect of technology on workers over the last four decades. A whole generation of economic research shows that computers have been a major force for increasing inequality. A force for a reduced middle class.
David Autor is a professor at MIT, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest labor economists in the world. He led a lot of that initial research about the computer age and the labor market. And he thinks this study, and another one like it, suggest that we could use Al to expand job opportunities, lower barriers to entry to a whole range of occupations, and reduce inequality.
Today on the show, the American middle class has been reducing for more than forty years. Could AI help change that trend (趋势)
12. What can we say about ChatGPT
A. It can do housework for us. B. It makes people feel worried.
C. It satisfies the majority of people D. It came out more than six mouths ago.
13. What does the study tell us about AI
A. It causes inequality. B. It lessens the middle class.
C. It is useless for skilled workers. D. It improves workers’ productivity.
14. What is David Autor’s attitude towards AI
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.
15. Which can be the best title for the text
A. People’s Concern About AI B. Calls for Regulation of AI Systems
C ChatGPT Can Make Workers More Productive D. How AI Could Help Rebuild the Middle Class

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节 满分20分)
Happy Mother’s Day
It was Mother’s Day and I was shopping at the local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.
While we were walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, “Mom, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, “Why shouldn’t we buy the lady a flower It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful deed.”
By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great fear, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman’s husband and I told him it was from my son. At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you very much.” He then turned to me, “You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”
The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and gently said, “Happy Mother’s Day to you, too.”

Human activities have caused severe narrowness in over half of the world’s largest lakes in the past 30 years, causing risks to health, economies, and the environment, according to a study in the journal Science.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B

Is there a more effective way to write my to-do list Here are five surprising and useful tips.
___16___ . “If it takes less than two minutes, just do it right then and there,” says Angel Trinidad. It’s not worth the bandwidth to write it down, remember it and do it.
Automate(使…自动化)what you can. If you find yourself writing “buy more dog food”on your to-do list every few weeks, save yourself the effort of adding it to your to-do list by signing up for a subscription to get the food delivered to your house each month. ___17___
Break each task into smaller pieces. People aren’t specific enough when they write down items on their to-do lists. For example, I want to retile my kitchen floor.
