When was the last time you gave or received
a hug Do your parents hug you before you go to school In Western countries,
it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug.
You might hug your teammates after winning
a basketball game. If one of your friends is having a bad day, you can hug him
to cheer him up. Friends who haven't seen each other for a long time will
usually hug each other when meeting.
Of course, people in different countries
have different opinions when it comes to hugging. After coming to China, I've
noticed that Chinese people are generally more reluctant (不情愿的) to hug than those are in my home country, the USA.
My Chinese friends told me that hugging is
considered to be very intimate (亲密的) in
their culture. It usually only happens between people who are really close to
each other, like couples. Chinese people don't usually hug in public either.
But people's attitudes towards hugging can
also change. I remember watching a video story about a "hugging party"
that was held in Shanghai. A local artist held the party, inviting strangers
and asking them to hug each other.
The Chinese participants clearly looked
uncomfortable. However, after the party, several of them changed their minds.
They decided that hugging doesn't have to be awkward (尴尬的) and can actually be quite nice. So next time you see your mum or
dad, give her/him a hug—see how it makes you feel.
(1)What usually happens between good friends when meeting in Western countries
A.Hugging. B.Nodding. C.Shaking hands. D.Kissing.

people are saying. If you focus too much on their body language signals, you
and the people may feel uncomfortable.

20.阅读理解
Body language is the quiet, secret and most
powerful language of all! It is said that our body movements communicate about
50 per cent of what we really mean while words only express 7 per cent. So
while your mouth is closed your body is just saying…
Arms How you hold your arms shows how open
and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of
your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on
whatever comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big
movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone
upsets you, just cross your arms to show you're unhappy!
Head When you want to appear confident,
keep your head level. If you are a monitor in class, you can also take on this
position when you want your words to be taken seriously. However, to be
friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little.
Legs Your legs tend to move around a lot
more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at
interviews, try to keep them still!
Posture (姿势) A
good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you
normally don't sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing
more difficult, which can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.
Mouth When you are thinking, you often
purse your lips. You might also use this position to hold back an angry comment
you don't wish to show. However, it will probably still be noticed and people
will know you're not pleased.
Face When you lie, you might
put on a false face. But that expression would crack briefly, allowing displays
of true emotions such as happiness, sadness, disgust (厌恶) and fear to come through.
(1)When someone is keeping his arms behind his back, he tries to tell you that ____________.
A.he is outgoing B.he is angry
C.he is not afraid D.he is cool
(2)If you want to appear confident, you should _________.
A.move your arms a lot B.keep your head level
C.move your head a little D.cross your arms
(3)Which of the following movements tells someone is nervous
A.Moving around a lot more than normal.
B.Not sitting straight with the shoulders inwards.
C.Pursing the lips to hold back an angry comment.
D.Keeping the arms to the sides of the body.
(4)What can we infer from the passage
A.Different people in different countries must have the same understanding of the same body movement.
B.Body language can express more meanings than words do in communication.
C.We cannot communicate with others without words.
D.It's not polite to use body language in formal communication.
(5)Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.Body language, the most commonly used language
B.Arms tell more than legs
C.Facial expressions tell the truth
D.One simple movement lets slip secrets of mind

八、任务型阅读
32.阅读短文及文后A~E选项,选出可以填入各题空白处的最佳选项。
We
use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that
these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. So does
laughter or crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way
different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example,
often show their teeth when they are angry.
Fear
is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In
Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like "he went pale and began
to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got
a very big shock. In Chinese "surprise" can be described in
a phrase like "they stretched out their tongues". Sticking out your
tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.
   Experiments
in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing
fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces.
A. Other studies show that
older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language
than younger people do. B. Even in the same
culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. C. It is true that a smile
means the same thing in any language. D. This is probably because
they are born with those behaviour patterns. E. However, "he opened
his eyes wide" is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it
means surprise.
【答案】C;D;E;B;A

B. Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. 即使在同一种文化中,人们理解和表达感情的能力也是不同的。
C. It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. 的确,微笑在任何语言中都意味着同样的事情。
D. This is probably because they are born with those behaviour patterns. 这可能是因为他们与生俱来的行为模式。
E. However, "he opened his eyes wide" is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. 不过,“他睁大了眼睛”在中文里是愤怒的意思,而在英文里是惊讶的意思。符合语境。

(2)根据上句Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry.( 例如,狗、老虎和人类在生气的时候经常露出牙齿。 )可知,此句应该与行为模式有关。选项 D. 这可能是因为他们与生俱来的行为模式。符合语境。故选D。
(3)根据上句In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like "he went pale and began to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock.( 在中国和英国的文学作品中,有一句话,比如“他脸色苍白,开始发抖”,意思是这个人要么是非常害怕,要么是刚刚受到了非常大的打击。 )可知,恐惧在世界各地都以大致相同的方式表现出来。此句应该表转折,讲述中英不同的表现方式,选项E. 不过,“他睁大了眼睛”在中文里是愤怒的意思,而在英文里是惊讶的意思。符合语境。故选E。
(4)根据第二段后半段说的是不同的文化的不同之处,此句应该表示同一种文化的差别。选项B. 即使在同一种文化中,人们理解和表达感情的能力也是不同的。 符合语境。故选B。
(5)根据上句 Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. ( 美国的实验表明,女性通常比男性更善于识别人们脸上的恐惧、愤怒、爱和幸福。 )可知,接下来应该是除了性别差别外,其它的人群的差别,选项A. 其他研究表明,老年人通常比年轻人更容易识别或理解身体语言。 符合语境。故选A。

17.阅读理解
D.Kissing.
(2)The second paragraph tells us ________.
A.the advantages of hugging each other
B.some situations in which people hug each other
C.the reasons why friends need to hug each other
D.the ways of hugging each other
(3)In Chinese culture, hugs usually happen between__________.
A.friends B.classmates
C.couples D.teachers and students
(4)What did people do at the "hugging party"
A.They were invited to hug each other.
B.They watched a video about hugging.
C.They told stories about hugging.
D.They sang their favourite songs.
(5)The writer wrote the last paragraph to____________.
A.encourage people to be nice to strangers
B.explain why people feel uncomfortable while hugging
C.show how people can change their minds about hugging
D.tell people not to hug each other anywhere

If the eyes are the windows of the soul,
then the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, we may
give our body signals. If we look at someone else's body, we can often tell how
he or she is feeling by his or her body signals. So reading body language
signals is a great tool in daily communication.
In case (假使) you
don't think that learning how to read and use body language is important, here
are some numbers for you. 7%of the information we receive is from what people
actually say, and 38%of the information we receive is from the tone (语气) and the speed of their voice; while 55%of the information we
receive is from their body language.
These non-verbal (非语言的) signals will help you a lot, but you still need to focus on what
people are saying. If you focus too much on their body language signals, you
and the people may feel uncomfortable.
It is useful to be able to read people's
body language, but it is useful to learn how to send the right signals and
avoid the wrong signals too. Body language maybe given several
interpretations. Many signals have different meanings, depending on the
person and the situation. Be sure of it when you are trying to read a body language
signal.
(1)The numbers mentioned in the second paragraph are to___________.
A.explain what body language is
B.show the importance of body language
C.tell us body language is less used than verbal language
D.tell us body language is the only tool in communication
(2)What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A.Body language is widely used all over the world.
B.Body language can be explained in different ways.
C.It's too hard to understand the meanings of body language.
D.People have already looked through many books on body language.
(3)According to the writer, body language is very ____________.
A.simple to learn B.useless to learn
C.hard to understand D.helpful in communication
(4)According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE
A.Body language is uncomfortable.
B.What people are saying is not important.
C.Body language can show your emotion.

The idea of what shaking the head means is
not always the same in different countries. Maybe some visitors would be
surprised when they first come to India. When they talk to an Indian, they
would find he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the
Indian doesn't like what they say. But in fact, they would be completely wrong.
Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn't mean "No".
If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble.
One day, a foreign officer went to India on
business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his
driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The
officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of
course, got angry.
"How dare you refuse my order "
he shouted. "Drive me to my office at once!"
The driver answered in a loud voice too. "Yes,
sir!" But to the officer's surprise, the driver shook his head at the same
time.
The car started and the foreign officer was
now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he
nodded with a smile, "'No' means "Yes' here!"
(1)What does shaking one's head mean all over the world
A.It means "Yes". B.It means "No".
C.It means "Glad". D.It means "Yes" or "No".
(2)What should you do in India if you agree with somebody
A.Shake our head. B.Nod our head.
C.Speak in a loud voice. D.Say it again and again.
(3)Why did the officer go to India
A.He went there to visit his friend. B.He went there to buy a car.
C.He went there to learn driving. D.He went there because of his job.
(4)Why did the officer get angry
A.Because the driver didn't understand him.
B.Because the driver still shook his head after he said again.
C.Because the driver didn't like the officer.
D.Because the driver didn't answer in a loud voice.
(5)What can we learn from the story
A.When you are in India, you should always shake your head.
B.You shouldn't shake your head if you're a driver.
C.Shaking your head will make others get angry.
D.Different countries have different customs.

Body
language is used by people for sending messages to one another. It is very
helpful it can help make you easily understood by others. When you
are talking with others, you are not only using words, also using
expressions and body movements. Body language (include) your facial
expressions and gestures when you are communicating with other people. It is important
part of social etiquette (社交礼仪) and
the proper use of body language can make your (communicate) more
effective (有效的), especially when it comes to foreign
friends who can't speak your language. That means you could convey (传达) most of your information by body language even if you don't know

(1)根据上句We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. (我们用语言和手势来表达我们的感受,但问题是这些语言和手势可以用不同的方式来理解。)和下句 So does laughter or crying. (大笑或哭泣也是如此。)可知,此句承上启下,应该与一种语言或手势有关。选项C. 的确,微笑在任何语言中都意味着同样的事情。符合语境。故选C。
(2)根据上句Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry.( 例如,狗、老虎和人类在生气的时候经常露出牙齿。 )可知,此句应该与行为模式有关。选项 D. 这可能是因为他们与生俱来的行为模式。符合语境。故选D。
(3)根据上句In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like "he went pale and began to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock.( 在中国和英国的文学作品中,有一句话,比如“他脸色苍白,开始发抖”,意思是这个人要么是非常害怕,要么是刚刚受到了非常大的打击。 )可知,恐惧在世界各地都以大致相同的方式表现出来。此句应该表转折,讲述中英不同的表现方式,选项E. 不过,“他睁大了眼睛”在中文里是愤怒的意思,而在英文里是惊讶的意思。符合语境。故选E。
(4)根据第二段后半段说的是不同的文化的不同之处,此句应该表示同一种文化的差别。选项B. 即使在同一种文化中,人们理解和表达感情的能力也是不同的。 符合语境。故选B。
(5)根据上句 Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. ( 美国的实验表明,女性通常比男性更善于识别人们脸上的恐惧、愤怒、爱和幸福。 )可知,接下来应该是除了性别差别外,其它的人群的差别,选项A. 其他研究表明,老年人通常比年轻人更容易识别或理解身体语言。 符合语境。故选A。

33.【答案】Dear David,
How are you recently I have got a solution to your problem with communication. You should improve your body language and make a good impression on others. First, keep smiling when you are with people. The friendly expression will make people feel closer to you. Second, keep eye contact to create a better communication with people around you. Third, when they are talking, don't forget to nod once
in a while to show that you are listening. At last, stand straight, keep your head up and relax your body. Those postures will make you look less nervous, and help you express yourself more confidently.
