The music band Coldplay is taking action to protect the environment. This includes using their fans’ energy to help provide electricity for their performances. In this way, they use electricity without adding carbon gases (含碳气体) to the air. The band hopes to cut the amount of CO2 given out by its business activities by 50 percent.
The Coldplay stars have added special dance floors and energy-storing bicycles to their latest world tour performance. The purpose is to get fans to help produce electricity by dancing and riding. Each dance floor can support many people. It creates electricity when people move on it. Each of the bikes can create an average of 200 watts (瓦特) of electricity. In order to encourage fans to dance or ride more during the performance, they even have competitions to find out which group of fans can create the most electricity.
“Being green is a good business model. That’s what we’d like to show, ” said Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. “The changes will bring a sense of belonging to the fans. Everything in our show is planned to bring everyone into the same group, singing together. It makes us feel part of a community.”
Coldplay has taken other steps to protect the environment. One of its tour stages uses recycled steel. The band also hopes to set up the world’s first tour battery system, made from 40 recycled electric car batteries. The hope is to power the whole show with batteries.

A habitat is where a plant or animal lives and grows. A habitat is part of an ecosystem where lots of different plants and animals live. Mountains, with their many levels are an ecosystem including different habitats.
At the base of a mountain, you will probably find a forest filled with lots of plants and trees. A grizzly bear or a garter snake might cross your path. You might notice an owl in a tree.
Climb higher, toward the middle of the mountainside and leave the forest behind for grasslands and maybe a stream. Here, you might meet a mountain lion stalking its prey or a salamander (蝾螈) slipping underneath a leaf to hide. A goat might be leaping from rock to rock.
Climb even higher, toward the top, and you’ll notice a change in the temperature. It’s getting colder and snow is covering the mountaintop. There aren’t many plants near the mountaintop, but you might see fuzzy lichen (苔藓) covering rocks like carpeting. The air is thin at the top of the mountain, which makes it difficult for large animals to breathe. When people climb very large mountains, they often take special air bags filled with oxygen. Even though you won’t see many big animals, millions of tiny insects like snow fleas might appear.
Depending on the elevation, you could see deserts, river valleys, meadows, forests and snowcaps all on one mountain. And with each unique habitat, comes unique plant and animal life.

Antarctica (南极洲) is known for being a large land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. However, the land is slowly starting to turn warm. According to The Guardian, the Antarctic has shown a new high temperature for the first time on record, raising fears of climate change in the world’s coldest place.
On Feb. 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75℃ on the icy land of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the past record of 19.8℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading (数据) was taken at a watch station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was recorded during a 20-year-long research project. The purpose of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永冻土) within the area. Permafrost is the earth that stays icy for at least two years.
Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer pointed out that “We can’t use this to predict climate change in the future. It’s simply a sign that something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was around 19℃. These higher temperatures can cause ice in the Antarctic area to melt (融化). The melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can put the coast areas in danger. It’s believed to be behind an alarming drop of more than 50 percent in the number of penguins, which are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to live in.

And many wild animals now can’t find enough food to eat. At the same time, man is killing animals just for their fur, teeth and meat.
People should realize how serious the situation is and something should be done to save the animals. We are supposed to set up some natural places so that animals can live freely. As we know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. People’s life has been greatly influenced. Something must be done to stop the pollution. Here are my suggestions:
Firstly①, we should plant more trees. Trees are very important and helpful for us. Secondly①, we must take action in rubbish classification to deal with rubbish. Thirdly①, some laws about the environmental protection must be passed to stop the environmental pollution. At last, people should be further educated to know the importance of the problems, to use modern ways to save our natural resources and recycle our products.
In a word , if each one pays more attention to our environment, there will be less pollution and our life will be better.②
