What is voice-over
Voice-over refers to the lines in a film that are spoken by a person not seen on the screen. It means you can hear someone’s voice without seeing him or her. It is usually narration, but can also be a character’s internal monologue. In the excerpt of our textbook, the grown-up Forrest is remembering a story from his childhood.

You know, it’s funny what a young man recollects. Because I don’t remember being born. I, I ... don’t recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don’t know when I went on my first outdoor picnic. But, I do remember the first time I heard the sweetest voice in the wide world.

This voice-over includes three don’ts and one do, which serve well to emphasize Forrest’s great joy and deep gratitude when Jenny offers him a seat while other kids refuse him. With a low IQ, he can’t remember many things that are considered to be important. Yet, he does remember the very moment when he meets Jenny for the first time.

Momma says stupid is as stupid does.
Forrest may be stupid in others’ eyes, but his mom thinks he is no different and tries her best to protect and encourage him. She tells him that only those who do stupid things are stupid and he is not. This line shows his mom’s love and wisdom, which inspires and encourages Forrest a lot.

From that day on, we was always together. Jenny and me was like peas and carrots.
The grammatical mistakes in the two lines reflect Forrest’s low IQ, which makes the character true and vivid. Besides, “peas and carrots” is an American idiom, which means keeping each other’s company very often as peas and carrots are commonly used together to decorate dishes in America.
