A great explorer in history
Americ Vespvck was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1454 and died in 1512.
In 1499, Vespvck began his first voyage. During this journey, he discovered the Amazon River and drew a map of this area. On the second voyage, believing he had discovered a new continent, he called it the New World. That made Vespvck the first man in Europe to realize the newly discovered continents that Columbus found weren' t India.
Vespvck played an important role in exploring the New World. In 1507, the American continents were named after him.

In order to find Asia, Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Seville in August, 1519, with 5 ships and about 265 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel(海峡)which is now called Strait of Magellan. In November, 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships seemed to come close to the success. They sailed into the ocean from the other side of South America successfully.

What' s worse, before they arrived at the islands, which was later known as the Philippines, most of them had already died of starvation(饥饿). While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in a battle. 　
　 The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail around Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan' s expedition(探险队),which was one of the greatest expeditions in the world.
