Unit1---Appreciating language
When we are no longer young, we look back on what we could have done better, and wethink about the things we did not do. Read aloud the passage below about an old man's advice.
If I were a Boy Again
If I were a boy again, I would try hard to know about and then deal honestlywith myself, to study up my own weaknesses and strengths, and I wouldbegin early enough, before faults had time to become habits.
If I were a boy again, I would practise perseverance, and never give upbecause it was hard to do something. If we want light, we must conquerdarkness. There is nothing more valuable than a determination to perseverewhen the right thing needs to be done. It can sometimes equal genius in itsresults.
If I were a boy again, I would build a habit of attention, and I would letnothing come between me and the subject at hand: an ice skater nevertries to skate in two directions at once. One of our great mistakes, whilewe are young, is that we do not focus strictly on what we are doing at thatparticular moment. It is easy to learn how to pay attention, if we begin earlyenough.
If I were a boy again, I would try to become a fearless person. I wouldconsider courage as one of the highest achievements of life. Dangers willarise in any place, at any time, but presence of mind will often conquer theworst of them. Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be feared.
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side of everything. Lifeis like a mirror; if you smile upon it, it smiles back again on you, but ifyou frown, you will be sure to get a similar look in return. Inner sunshinewarms not only the heart of the owner, but all who come in contact with it.
(Adapted from "If I Were a Boy Again: A Plain Talk with My Nephews", by James Thomas Fields)
Unit2---Appreciating language
Our childhood, when we are cared for by our parents, may be one of the happiest momentsin our lives. Read aloud the excerpt below about such a happy moment.
There were three of them. Roberta was the eldest. Of course, mothersnever have favourites, but if their mother HAD had a favourite, it mighthave been Roberta. Next came Peter, who wished to be an engineerwhen he grew up; and the youngest was Phyllis, who meant extremelywell.
Mother did not spend all her time in paying dull calls to dull ladies, andsitting dully at home waiting for dull ladies to pay calls to her. She wasalmost always there, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them to do their home-lessons. Besides this she used to writestories for them while they were at school, and read them aloud aftertea, and she always made up funny pieces of poetry for their birthdaysand for other occasions, such as the refurnishing of the doll's house, orthe time when they were ill.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed:prettyclothes, good fires, a lovely nursery with heaps of toys, and a MotherGoose wallpaper. They had a kind and merry nursemaid, and a dogwho was called James, and who was their very own. They also had afather who was just perfect—never cross, never unjust, and always readyfor a game—at least, if at any time he was NOT ready, he always hadan excellent reason for it, and explained the reason to the children sointerestingly and funnily that they felt sure he couldn't help himself.
You will think that they ought to have been very happy. And so theywere, but they did not know HOW happy till the pretty life in the RedVilla was over and done with, and they had to live a very different lifeindeed.
The terrible change came quite suddenly.
(Adapted from The Railway Children, by Edith Nesbit)
Unit3---Appreciating language
Poets from around the world have written about friendship. Read aloud the two poemsbelow about friendship.
Parting
By Wang Wei
Morning rain at Weicheng settles dust light,
The country inn is green with fresh willows around.
Drink one more cup at this moment, I invite,
For west of Yangguan Pass, no friends will be found.
(Translated by Gu Danke)
The Arrow and the Song
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth I knew not where;
For so swiftly it flew the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of a song
Long, long afterwards in an oak,
I found the arrow still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
Unit4---Appreciating language
Every one of us is unique. Read aloud the poem below about self-confidence.
I Am Me
By Virginia Satir
In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me
Everything that comes out of me is authentically me
Because I alone chose it—I own everything about me
My body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions,
Whether they be to others or to myself—I own my fantasies,
My dreams, my hopes, my fears—I own all my triumphs and successes,
All my failures and mistakes because I own all of me
I can become intimately acquainted with me
By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with me in all my parts
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me,
And other aspects that I do not know
But as long as I am friendly and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles
And for ways to find out more about me
However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and
Whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time
Is authentically me
If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought and felt
Turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting,
Keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded-I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do
I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive,
And to make sense and order out of the world of people
And things outside of me
I own me, and therefore I can engineer me
I am me and I AM OKAY
