Do you know April 20, 2022 is the 13th UN Chinese Language Day The Chinese language is the most spoken language in the world . It has much more users on the earth than any other language . More than 1.4 billion people speak Chinese as their first language , with many more speaking Chinese at a second or third language . And Chinese is one of the official languages of the Untie Nations .
The Chinese language has a very rich heritage because it has existed (存在) in the world for thousands of years. The UN celebrated the first Chinese Language Day on November 12th , 2010 . The date changed to April 20th the following year so that the celebration would take place on a special date for the Chinese people . It is said that Cang Jie invented the Chinese characters during the period of the Yellow Emperor . When he invented the characters , the millet (栗) rained from the sky . Since then , Chinese people have started celebrating this day , and this day has been called Guyu (Rain of Miller ) . It usually corresponds (相符)to April 20th in the Western calendar .
The UN first created Chinese Language Day to encourage people to use all of its official languages equally (平等地),which are English , Arabic , Chinese , French , Russian . Chinese became an official language of the United Nations in 1946. The UN made Chinese its “working language” in 1973. After that , more more UN offices and staff members began to work with Chinese .
