Is it fair for restaurants to ban(禁止) little eaters In Monronroeville, a local restaurant,McDain's, recently decided to ban young children. Alice Roseman, its manager, says kids have bad manners and make too much noise. Other people, however, say the rule is hard to accept. Since it has become a hot topic in public, we caught several local people talking about it.
YES
There is no law stopping restaurants from banning young children. Restaurant owners should be allowed to ban them. Kids often run around and cause problems for waiters and other customers.
————Kate Barker
Kids always cause a mess, but the parents refuse to do anything about their kids'behaviors. Although kids may be at the center of their parents' universe, they aren't at the center of everyone else's.
———Mike Vuick
Adults sometimes want to talk and enjoy their dinner, but they can't if a child is crying and running all over the place. That's why sometimes parents don't like eating at home. They wish they could have a good meal in the restaurants without kids'noise.
————Dale Levitsky
NO
Banning kids from restaurants is a bad idea. If kids were banned, many restaurants would lose business, Even if restaurants gave customers the chance to buy take-away meals for their kids, many families would probably still not eat there.
————Nicholas Song
Restaurants owners who ban kids think all children are wild and rude. But that's not true. Most children's eating behaviors are good enough. Even though some kids do have bad manners, banning is not a right way to teach them. I think how a society treats its children is important. After all, all kids are people, too.
————Elliott Hall

Dreaming of an ancient duke (公爵)
Q: Chinese people often say they dream about the Duke of Zhou. Is the Duke of Zhou a real person
A:The Duke of Zhou was a politician(政治家) who lived during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC). His actual name was Ji Dan. He was the younger brother of King Wuwang of Zhou.
The duke helped his brother beat the Kingdom of Shang and establish (建立) the dynasty. He himself was a regional ruler or zhuhou. However, after several years, King Wuwang fell sick and wanted the duke to become the king, but the duke refused. King Wuwang's oldest son then came to power-he was known as King Chengwang.
The duke acted as a responsible regent(摄政王) to help his nephew(侄子). He put down a rebellion(暴乱). He came up with the idea of ruling through rituals (礼仪). When his nephew came of age, the duke handed over power.
Several centuries had passed before Confucius(孔子) saw the Duke of Zhou as a great politician again. He studied the knowledge passed down from the Zhou Dynasty from a young age. He even dreamed about the duke quite often. While serving the State of Lu, Confucius suggested that its ruler run the state with rituals but the ruler didn't listen to him. This is why he traveled to other states to promote(推广) the idea.
After many years, his idea still didn't have much support. Already an old man, he said that he was too old to dream about the Duke of Zhou. Later, people started using“dreaming about the Duke of Zhou”to refer to remembering scholars of the past(先贤). Today, it simply refers to going to sleep.

Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher, we will answer a question from Yousra, from Egypt, about how to use hyphens(连字符) when making a compound(复合的) adjective.
Question:
Hello, my name is Yousra from Egypt.
I would like to know when I should use a hyphen (-) between two words like,“top-selling”or“well-being.”
Thanks.
Answer:
Dear Yousra,
Thank you for your question! In this week's program, we will explain how to use hyphens to make compound adjectives.
What is a hyphen
A hyphen(-) is used to combine two or more words together to create a compound word.
Do not confuse(混淆) a hyphen with a longer dash (--). In writing, we use a longer dash like a comma(,), or a period (.) to separate sentences.
What is a compound adjective ·
Compound adjectives are modifiers(修饰成分) formed by combining adjectives with other adjectives, nouns, and even adverbs. We use them as a single expression to describe the noun that comes after.
The compound adjective“top-selling”from your question is a great example.
The top-selling employee had the most sales for the month.
Here, the two adjectives,“top”and“selling”are combined into one to describe the employee.“Top-selling”means“having the most sales.”
We use hyphens to create compound adjectives, but there are some important rules for creating them with hyphens.
How to use hyphens to make compound adjectives
1. Only use a hyphen when the two words could be misunderstood, and the compound adjective acts together as a single expression. Here is an example:
The well behaved cat slept all day.(no hyphen, incorrect)
The well-behaved cat slept all day. (hyphen, correct)
In this example,“well-behaved”acts like one expression.
If we separate the two words“well”and“behaved”, the sentence does not make sense. And it could be misunderstood.
2. Use only a hyphen in a compound adjective when it comes before a noun. Example:
I love old-fashioned(过时的) clothes. (Hyphen, correct)
I love clothes that are old-fashioned. (Hyphen, incorrect)
I love clòthes that are old fashioned. (No hyphen, correct)
3. You do not need a hyphen between an adverb and an adjective, especially when using a present participle(分词) adjective or a past participle adjective.
The urgently-needed doctor arrived on time.
(Hyphen, incorrect)
The urgently(迫切地;紧急地) needed doctor arrived on time.
(No hyphen, correct)
These are just a few basic rules to help you create compound adjectives when writing or speaking. Please let us know if these rules, explanations, and examples have helped you,Yousra.
Next week on Ask a Teacher, we will explore using hyphens to create compound nouns!
