Stan Lee is a writer. He created many of our favourite heroes. Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk and the Silver Surfer are just three of them. In his stories, the heroes always win in the end. When he was young, he loved to watch his favourite actors in films. He wanted to create cartoon people just like them. He thought they were heroes because they were brave and did not worry about danger. Real people in his life also helped Stan.

His teacher told great stories, and made him love reading. The books he read, especially books by famous writers like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain, made him want to write. His mother was always proud of him, and told him his work was good.
Children often ask Stan how they can become writers. He tells them to read. He says they should read everything, not just their favourite kinds of books, or books by famous writers.

My favourite Greek hero is Odysseus. He is the main character in The Odyssey, a famous story by the Greek storyteller, Homer.

Odysseus and his friends go from Greece to Troy to fight. After ten years, they win and are very proud of themselves. Then they set off for home, but on their way, there is a great storm. ③ They become lost, and that is the start of their great adventures. While they are travelling, they meet many strange people. Most of them want to hurt Odysseus and his friends, but a few help them. On one island a very big man with only one eye tries to kill them.

During this fight, Odysseus loses many of his friends, but he manages to get away.
After ten years of fighting and ten more years on the way home, Odysseus completes his journey and manages to get back to his own country, alone. His wife and son are waiting for him to come back. However, he looks so different that they fail to recognise him.

I like this story because it is interesting and exciting. I think Odysseus is a true hero. He is very clever and has a strong will. I also learn from him that great men never give up, no matter what difficulties they face.

Around the world
A famous British nurse
Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May 1820. In 1851, she was trained as a nurse. Three years later, she went to a British military hospital so that she could help British soldiers. Before she arrived, many soldiers died in the hospital because it was dirty. Florence Nightingale worked hard to make the hospital clean and save soldiers’ lives.

When she returned to Britain in 1856, she became a national hero. Florence Nightingale wrote several books about nursing, and she also started a school to train nurses. She died in London on 13th August 1910, when she was ninety years old.

原因状语
从句 because because 引导的原因状语从句表示直接原因, 语气最强, 用于回答why 引导的
特殊疑问句。because 引导的原因状语从句一般置于主句之后。
e.g. I do it because I like it.
我做这件事是因为我喜欢。
类型 引导词 用法及例句
目的状语
从句 so that 表示行为的目的, 可与in order that 进行转换。
e.g. He went to school without breakfast so that he wouldn’t be late.
为了不迟到, 他没吃早饭就去上学了。
结果状语
从句 so so 用作连词, 主要用于表结果, 意为“所以”, 主句表示原因, 从句表示由于该原因而导致的结果。
e.g. He worked too hard, so he fell ill again.
他工作太努力了, 所以又病倒了。
注意: 1. 目的状语从句可由so that 引导。从句中通常有can, could, may, might 等情态动词。
e.g. I hurried through my work so that I could be in time for wonderful TV programmes.
我匆匆完成我的工作, 以便能够及时收看到精彩的电视节目。
2. so that 与so 一词之差, 前者引导目的状语从句, 后者引导结果状语从句。从句动词也有区别: 目的状语从句表示未来、可能性, 而结果状语从句表示已经发生。

Yuan Longping was born in Beijing in 1930. When he was twenty years old, he studied in Southwest Agricultural College. He finished his studies after three years and became a teacher.
In 1964, Yuan Longping made a special study of rice after natural disasters caused great damage to China’s rice harvest. He developed his new kind of rice in 1974.
In the 1980s, he travelled around the world and gave advice about growing rice to many people. In 2004, he won the World Food Prize for his work. Yuan Longping’s new rice has helped many countries of the world grow more rice than before. So he is called the “Father of Hybrid Rice”.
He has saved many people from hunger, and that is why he is a hero.
