Last night, a school night, my 11-year-old son’s baseball team played a game that lasted until 9: 30. By the time we got home and he had a quick dinner and shower, it was 10: 30--an hour and a half later than a child who gets up at 6: 30 should go to bed. We love baseball. My son is having fun, getting exercise, and learning patience, teamwork and sports spirit. But the truth is that the game also influences his sleep.
As parents, we want good things for our children. We want them to be healthy both in body and in mind. To this end, we look for ways to help our kids grow and develop. We help them with their homework. We sign them up for dance, soccer and baseball. We encourage our kids to take honors courses (培优课程) or to have after-school jobs. And we praise (表扬) them for success and achievements.
However, the irony is that all of these activities that we are giving our children to make their lives colorful could be badly influencing their health and taking happiness away. Activities and goals are good. But sleep and health are more important. We have to start taking sleep seriously. In order to ensure our kids get the sleep they need, parents and schools should make an effort.

Vincent van Gogh (文森特·梵高) was born in the Netherlands in 1853. Although he enjoyed drawing from the time he was a young boy, Vincent had a number of other jobs before he decided to work as an artist full time. At around the age of 27, van Gogh decided to throw himself into art.
When Vincent first started drawing, he used lots of dark colors such as browns and dark greens. His pictures were often sad.
Much of what we know about Vincent comes from letters he wrote to his brother Theo. Theo worked in an art gallery (画廊) in Paris and supported Vincent. He sent Vincent money and encouraged him. Theo tried to sell Vincent’s paintings, but no one wanted to buy them. Theo wrote to Vincent to tell him about a new style of painting in Paris called Impressionism (印象派). In 1886 Vincent moved to Paris to learn from some new painters. During this time Vincent began to use brighter colors.
Vincent liked to draw many things. He painted subjects from the streets and cafes of Paris as well as the countryside. He also became interested in painting portraits (肖像) of people. When he couldn’t find models, he would paint himself for practice. He painted over twenty self portraits during this time.
Although he wasn’t famous during his lifetime, today van Gogh is considered one of the greatest artists of his time.

Good morning, everyone!
I am very happy to be here to make a speech today. The topic of my speech is one thing I keep doing every day.
I love running and I have kept running for three years. When I was in Grade 7, I was not good at sports and running was always my weakness. I often failed in my running test. In order to catch up with my classmates, I began to practice running every day after school. Sometimes, I was so tired that I really wanted to give up. But I kept telling myself that I could make it. No matter what kind of difficulty I faced, I tried my best to keep running. Now I do much better in running and I’m very proud of myself.
That’s all. Thank you!
