My father's playing the violin lights up any room. To him, it is an instrument of faith, hope and charity. My mother used to joke, “Your papa would play his violin if the world was about to blow up.”
Once_Dad_came_about_as_close_to_that_as_could_ever_be_possible.
In the early years of the 20th century, the boll weevil (棉铃象鼻虫) began destroying the cotton farms in the southern USA.
In May 1910, folks all over the nation were talking about Halley's Comet There were all sorts of frightening stories about it, the main one being that the world would pass through its tail, said to be millions of miles long.
Between the threats of the comet and weevils, the farmers were running low on optimism. One night, they gathered at our farm to discuss what to do. Will Bowen, a local man, suggested, “Charley, how about giving us a little music?”
“I don't think anybody'd want to hear me tonight,” Dad replied.
“Come on, Mr. Nordyke,” one of the younger women urged. “Play for us!”
Dad had a knack (本领) for getting people in the mood for his music. He played church songs, and then shifted to war songs. By the time he had finished performing, people were stamping their feet, clapping their hands and yelling.
All of our neighbors went home whistling. Very few remembered to look to see whether the comet was still around.
Another evening, Will Bowen called Dad on the telephone and said, “Charley, I'm downhearted and blue. Could you play a tune or two for me through the phone?”
Dad handed the receiver to me and then set about playing the songs he had performed that night. I could hear Mr. Bowen whistling and yelling.
By the time the tune was finished there were half a dozen neighbors on the line. They talked about how wonderful the music sounded over the telephone. They made numerous requests; I relayed them to Dad and he played.
Our broadcasts became regular features of community life. When the weather was bad in winter and farmers were forced to remain in the house, someone would ring us and ask Dad to play. Usually it developed into a network affair. Our phone kept ringing with requests for music until radio came into fashion.
1.Why did the author's mother say so at the end of Paragraph 1
A. She believed her husband had the ability to save her world.
B. She thought her husband could always get strength from his violin.
C. She was unhappy that her husband loved his violin more than her.
D. She believed music had the power to save the world.
再结合上文的“To him, it is an instrument of faith, hope and charity.”
2.The underlined sentence “Once Dad came about as close to that as could ever be possible.” functions as ________.
A. a conclusion of the first paragraph
B. an introduction of a story
C. an example of my father's love of music
D. the topic sentence of this passage
3.Which of the following is TRUE
A. At first Mr. Nordyke was too shy to play the violin.
B. The neighbors often dropped in to hear Mr. Nordyke's music.
C. Mr. Nordyke's music entertained and encouraged friends in the community.
D. The farmers realized Halley's Comet would not destroy the earth after listening to the music.
从第八段中的“By the time he had finished performing, people were stamping their feet, clapping their hands and yelling.”及倒数第三段中“I could hear Mr. Bowen whistling and yelling.”
4.From the last three paragraphs, we could see that Mr. Nordyke was a ________ person.
A. generous and optimistic
B. popular and creative
C. sensitive and determined
D. energetic and humorous
B
There are smoke free bars, smoke free parks, but a smoke free country
New Zealand's government has announced (宣布) a 40 percent rise in tobacco taxes (烟草税) over the next few years. Prices there are already among the highest in the world, and by 2016, they will top $15 a pack on average.
It is hoped that higher taxes and new laws will bring the nation closer to a recent promise to break the habit completely by 2025. Other countries have praised the idea of trying to stop their people from smoking, but few have been willing to put a date on it.
Will higher taxes work Will smokers stop smoking or just ignore (不理睬) the increased cost Chris Hobman, a New Zealander, said the cost is horrendous (惊人的) and could drive some poor people to break the law to support their habit. He believed the government needs to provide more support to smokers if it's serious about making them stop smoking.
Hayley Mauriohooho from Wellington has smoked for about 20 years. She said that higher taxes won't stop her. She also believed that the government shouldn't pay much attention to such things. “They have bigger things to worry about.”
Michael Colhoun, who works for ASH, a group that is against smoking, said the tax increases will force many poor people to smoke less or stop smoking completely because they simply won't be able to afford their habit.
One tobacco company in New Zealand says the tax increases will force people to turn to the black market.
“The number of illegal (违法的) operators will surely grow as the government makes it increasingly difficult for people to buy their product of choice,” wrote Susan Jones, head of the company.
According to a 2011 study, about 20 percent of adults New Zealanders smoke. That compares to about 16 percent of adults in the U.S., 17 percent in Australia, 23 percent in China and 27 percent in France.
New Zealand already charges (收费) more than 70 percent tax on tobacco, compared to 41 percent on average for China, 45 percent for the U.S., 64 percent for Australia and 80 percent for France.

First of all, you should make good preparations. Make a plan to quit and stick to it. Each time you feel like playing online games, do something else instead, like listening to the music or doing sports with your friends. Reward yourself with any progress you make. Then figure out what you're interested in and focus on one or two of them in your spare time. It is also a good choice to turn to others for help if necessary.

Several weeks ago, K ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )idsPost did a story on “The Art of Video Games” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition has created debate (辩论) with some people saying that as fun as video games are, they are not works of art. Other people say that video games may be a new form of art and that they belong in museums. We asked readers for their opinions on the topic. Here are a few of the letters we received.
A video game is like ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a painting on a screen. In order to make a video game, you have to think of something original (新颖的) to reach the players. That is the point of art.

Art is a way of com ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )municating ideas to the public in a way that is fun to them. The “public”, who in this case are kids and adults, are finding these video games from different time periods interesting. French painter Paul ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848 and then moved to Peru with his family when he was only a child. When he turned 17, he went to sea. He returned to Paris after six years.
He did not immediately ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) become an artist. He chose to settle in Paris and learn to become a stockbroker Several years later, Paul gave up his career to devote his life to painting in order to show the simple beauty he saw in the lives of primitive (原始的) peoples. He was quite used to success and believed that he would succeed in painting. Unfortunately, his wife saw it as an unnecessary hobby and never forgave him for his “selfish” decision.
Paul had always en ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )joyed the art of the French artists known as the impressionists He took up painting right away and later he exhibited his works with other impressionists. However, the reality of living an artist's life shocked him. He enjoyed his former comforts so much that he had difficulty getting used to his new life in poverty. In 1886, he decided to leave Paris and live in Brittany. After a year, he decided to travel to Panama where he worked as a worker. Then he went to Martinique, where he lived and painted in freedom. However, after a year of living in Martinique, he was forced to return to Brittany, penniless and quite ill.
In 1888, he visited ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) another famous artist, Vincent van Gogh. Paul slowly broke away from the impressionist movement and painted “Vision after the Sermon”. This painting was important in his career because it led a new style. It was the beautiful surroundings of Brittany and his voyages that led to his own unique style. New Approach to Shakespeare
The eleven year ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) olds are to learn Shakespeare using approaches taken by actors, and English teachers will be encouraged to let pupils walk around the classroom rather than read the plays while sitting at their desks.
Within the Engl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ish curriculum (课程) you tend to look at a play text as a piece of literature rather than performance. But you can't possibly understand Shakespeare's words if you're just reading it in your head. Shakespeare is difficult; it's not a 21st century text. You have to use a different way to understand it.
The new teaching ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )way focuses on how actors came to understand Shakespeare's language. In fact, actors have the same nervousness around Shakespeare's language as young people in schools do. But in six to eight weeks they get to a place of complete confidence about the play. Pupils can do as well.
Exercises devised ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e to let children aged 11 to 14 imitate the methods of professional actors. Written and oral assessments developed alongside the lessons will show how well students have understood the texts.
In one task pupi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ls will work on creating four key physical figures, that of king, warrior (勇士), lover and joker, before finding which lines of their chosen character go with those features and then acting them out. Through this they can examine how a character such as Macbeth can switch dramatically within one scene from soldier to kingly figure to trick planner. It's really creative but you're still getting a really wonderful model of understanding. It's_miles_away_from_“chalk_and_talk”.
Educators think Sha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )kespeare should be a central part of every young person's education. Developing a love of Shakespeare at a young age often leads to a lifelong passion for literature and helps to improve a child's reading and writing.

联 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )系空后的to可推出: decide to“决定”; hope to“希望”; refuse to“拒绝”,只有prepare to do sth.(准备做某事),符合题意。
20.C 根据下文语境a bunch of bright light可以推出他们“被光束包围”,故选surrounded。
www.21-cn-jy.com
23.B the numbe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r of“……的数目”; the amount of“……
28.C in all“总共;总计”; a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t all“根本;全然”; after all“毕竟;终究”; above all“首先”,根据语境可知此处表示“这毕竟是上帝的意愿”,所以用after all。21cnjy.com
31.A examine“检 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )查”; search“寻找”; seek“寻找”; watch“观看”。
32.A 根据语境“鹅卵石变成 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )了钻石”,故用turn into“变为”,而turn out“结果是”; turn over“翻转”和turn up“出现,音量开大”,都不符合语境。

A
When Robert Sabuda was eight years old, he looked through a book in his dentist's office and turned the pages quickly. Then he was transported to another dimension (维度) — the three dimensional world of pop ups (立体活动图). The book was heavier, thicker — unlike any book he had ever seen. It took his breath away. “When I opened it, I was shocked and pleased when something jumped right off the page,” says Sabuda. “I forgot all about the dentist.” But he never forgot about pop ups.
Robert's family and friends began to give him pop up books for gifts. He took them apart and put them back together to see how they worked. Before long, he began making his own pop up books and giving them as gifts.
With each pop up creation, Robert improved his pop up engineering skills and discovered the value of failing.
“With each failure.” Sabuda says, “I learned a better solution, one that I wouldn't have ever imagined.”
Clearly, Sabuda was on to something special. One of his high school art teachers, Mrs. Lucas, took a special interest in his abilities.
“She taught me how to draw, paint, and make prints,” says Sabuda.
Mrs. Lucas also helped him go to the Pratt Institute, a famous art school in New York City. What Sabuda learned at the Pratt Institute allowed him to continue his exploration of three dimensional art.
During his third year at Pratt, Sabuda took a summer internship (实习) at a publishing company, where he learned how children's books are created, and realized what he wanted to do. As part of his job, he opened packages containing the artwork of children's book illustrators (插图画家) such as Barbara Cooney and James Marshall.
“I decided there and then that I wanted to be a children's book illustrator,” Sabuda says. “It was something that made my heart beat faster!”
After college, jobs designing packages and coloring books started him on his way. The rest is pop up history. If his designs excite the child inside him, Sabuda feels that kids who pick up his books will be just as excited.

A little homeless girl stood crying near a small church from which she had been turned away because it was too crowded. “ I can't go to Sunday school.” She cried to the priest (牧师) as he walked by. The priest took her inside. The child was very happy because they found a room for her. She went to bed that night thinking of the children who had no place to sleep or pray in.
Two years later, the girl died there. As her little body was being moved, a worn and red purse was found, which she had found in the rubbish. Inside the purse was 57 cents and a note, written in childish handwriting, which read :“This is to help make the little church bigger so more children can go to Sunday school.”
After the priest tearfully read that note, he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion (热爱) to others. Soon, a newspaper reported on it. Qi Baishi (1863~1957) is one of the best known contemporary Chinese artists. His life shows he achieved success by combining talent with hard work.
He was born in a peasant family. At 11 he was sent to learn carpentry (木匠活). Through his work he got to know some local scholars. One of them, Hu Shenyuan, offered to teach him painting and poetry. During this period he earned his living by painting portraits and selling his works. Gradually he developed a reputation as an artist as well as a carpenter. In those years he devoted himself to poetry, calligraphy (书法), and seal carving. Although he admitted he was a versatile (多才多艺的) artist, his own criteria (标准) of his successes placed poetry first, seal carving second, calligraphy third, and painting last.
From 1902 to 1916, Qi toured the country five times, and he left his footmarks in many cities, such as Beijing and Hongkong. The trips broadened his vision and changed his style. In 1917 he settled down in Beijing, where he met many artists and scholars, and made friends with Chen Shizeng. Chen advised him not to imitate early masters and to form his own style.
Through long years of practice, Qi Baishi evolved a distinctive personal style. The subjects of his painting were wide and various, and the flowers, birds, fish, prawns (虾), and insects he painted are most admired by his public. To improve his technique of painting prawns, he raised some at home and frequently observed their movements. He wrote in his diary about how he had changed his method of painting prawns: “At first my prawns owned a reasonable similarity, then they became even more realistic, and finally light and dark colors became properly contrasted. These are the three changes.” Qi Baishi was able to portray the same object in either the xieyi or the gongbi style. When he painted a dragonfly in a detailed manner, he even drew the veins (翅膀) in its wings. When he adopted a bold, free style, he used only a few dry, expressive strokes to form it. What is fascinating about his work is that in some pictures both methods are used.
8.In his early life, what was Qi Baishi famous for
A. Painting. B. Poetry.
C. Calligraphy. D. Seal carving.
由第二段“his own criteria (标准) of his successes placed poetry first,”可知在齐白石年轻时期,他是以诗歌而出名的。
9.The underlined word “imitate” in Para. 3 probably means ________.
A. steal B. change
C. occupy D. copy
由后面的“Chen advised him ... to form his own style.”
10.Why did Qi Baishi raise some prawns at home
A. To improve his painting techniques.
B. To entertain himself.
C. To make money.
D. To observe how they grow up.
由最后一段中“To improve his technique of painting prawns, he raised some at home”可知,齐白石养虾是为了提高绘画技巧。

Dear_editor,
I'm_Li_Ming_of_Senior_Three,_Guangming_Middle_School._I'm_writing_to_tell_you_about_some_symptoms_of_anxiety_among_us_students_before_exams.
Most of us feel nervous whenever we're taking an important exam. Some will feel dizzy or tired, some will suffer from lack of sleep, and some will lose their appetite. In fact, all these symptoms have terrible effects on our exams and we are all eager to get rid of them.
First of all, in my opinion, it's important for us to have a right attitude towards exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results. Study hard every day and make careful plans for every exam. Only in this way can we avoid suffering from the pressure of exams.
Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late. We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep.

A
Dear Dr. Laura,
I always enjoy listening to your radio program. I enjoyed your story about gift giving and unselfish (无私的) love. Some people doubt that such unselfish love exists in today's world. Well, I'm here to give them hope.
I wanted to do something very special for my fifteen year old son Tom, who has always been the perfect child. He worked all summer to earn enough money to buy a used motorcycle. Then he spent hours and hours repairing it until it looked almost new.
I bought him the shiniest helmet (头盔) and a set of riding clothes to wear. I could hardly wait for him to open up his gift. In fact, I couldn't get any sleep the night before.
Upon waking, I went into the kitchen to start making the coffee and tea. When I looked into the living room, I saw a beautiful keyboard and a note: “To my wonderful mother, all my love, your son.”
It had been a long standing joke in our home that I wanted a piano so that I could take lessons. My husband's answer was “learn to play the piano, and I'll get you one.”
I stood there shocked, crying a river, asking myself how my son could afford this extravagant gift. Of course, everyone woke up, including Tom, and I immediately asked him to open my special gift. When he saw the helmet and clothes, he had a strange look on his face. Then I realized what had happened. He had sold the motorcycle to get me the keyboard.
Of course I was the proudest mother ever on that day, and my feet never hit the ground for a month.
So I want people to know, that kind of love still exists and lives even in the world. I thought you'd love to share this story with your listeners.
A very proud parent

2.In the end, Tom used the money he had to buy ________.
A. a shiny helmet for himself
B. a new motorcycle for himself
C. a piano for his father
D. a keyboard for his mother
根据倒数第三段中的“He had sold the motorcycle to get me the keyboard”可知, Tom用暑假打工赚的钱给作者买了一个练琴用的键盘。

Who left all those water footprints
I used to look into my closet and see clothes. But these days, whenever I look at my shoes, shirts, sweaters and jackets, I see water.
Until last fall, I'd been oblivious_to my “water footprint”, which is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce goods and services, according to the Water Footprint Network in the US. It was through the Green Blue Book by Thomas M. Kostigen that I was able to see how my own actions contributed.
It takes 569 gallons (2,154 liters) to make a T shirt, from its start in the cotten fields to the end product on store shelves.
I'd been satisfied with myself for the drinking water I had saved. I had put in water recycling systems to reuse the wastewater. I had set up rain barrels to collect storm water from my roof. But now I realize that my daily choices are using up an amazing amount of water too. The water footprint of my breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks together amounts to 512 gallons of water each day just to feed myself.
In a word: alarming.
Even more alarming was how much water I was using to get dressed. A pair of shoes takes 1,247 gallons. It takes 7,996 gallons (30,268 liters) to make a leather jacket and 2,866 gallons (10,849 liters) to make a single pair of blue jeans. If I imagine this for the clothes I buy every year, the result could fill my friend's swimming pool. I realized I could make some simple lifestyle changes. My decision is to buy second hand items — and go shopping less.
More considerate living is the main idea behind the concept (概念) of the water footprint. It has an unusual advantage, too. I had a hamburger recently, and enjoyed it a lot more since it is now a treat rather than a weekly habit.
By Susan Carpenter, the Los Angeles Times
4.According to the article, which of the following has the biggest water footprint
A. A T shirt. B. A pair of shoes.
C. A pair of jeans. D. A leather jacket.

It takes 7,996 gallons to make a leather jacket and 2,866 gallons to make a single pair of blue jeans.”
5.The underlined phrase “oblivious to” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.
A. interested in B. unaware of
C. ashamed of D. careful about
6.We can conclude from the article that the author ________.
A. didn't like to recycle water before

D. The Green Blue Book made a big difference to her lifestyle.
根据第二段“It was through the Green Blue Book by Thomas M. Kostigen that I was able to see how my own actions contributed.”
C
When he thought of the past, my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socks could ever have been Grandfather. Besides, he wore a cap — and the boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group, we would surely point to the wrong boy.
On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when Grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy. “How could that boy be you?” she cried. “He should have a beard.” We were, of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have beards, preferably white and bushy, like our own grandfather's.
“I was a good scholar,” Grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs. “I should have been top of the class if I hadn't had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”
“But Saturdays What did you do on Saturdays?”
“Saturdays, if it was fine, I'd be out all day in the fields with the men,” replied Grandfather. “And if it was wet, I'd be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasn't much time for studying.”
We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been Grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having a moment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what Grandfather had said about his childhood.
8.In the first paragraph of this passage, what the author really tells us is that ________.
A. his grandfather used to wear short trousers, socks and a cap as well
B. it was difficult to tell which of the boys in the photographs was Grandfather
C. he didn't believe Grandfather wore a cap pulled forward when he was at school
D. it was fun to watch boys in the photographs wearing caps pulled forward
由文章第一段最后一句“When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group, we would surely point to the wrong boy.”
9.The author's sister burst into tears because ________.
A. she did not get a chance to pick out Grandfather in the photographs
B. she was told which was the right boy before she herself could pick him out
C. other children did not agree with her that Grandfather should have had a beard
D. she found Grandfather in the photographs did not have a beard
由短文第二段“How could that boy be you?” she cried. “He should have a beard.”
10.When Grandfather said, “I should have been top of the class”, he meant ________.
A. if he had had more time for studying, he would have been the best in his class
B. he should have spent more time studying rather than playing ball games
C. his school days should not have been so hard and miserable
D. he could have never been the best student even if he had studied harder

Help Is at Hand
When I began planning to move to Auckland to study, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs, the cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism
Despite these worries, I came to New Zealand in July 2009. I have found the place and people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supplement (增补) my living expenses.
Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door asking for a job. However, I received little or no response. This became my routine every day after college for a few weeks.
One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities. The people there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in this manner. As I was about to leave, a client (职员) in the building, who had been listening to what the others had said, approached me and asked if I would wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, he returned. He asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.
I was a little confused, but had a good feeling about him and so I went along. Along the way, I realized that I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his business partner's office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking, and added that I should give him a call if I ever needed anything. I handed out my resumes and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.
It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.

The volcano is one of the most surprising frightening forces of nature. Maybe you have seen pictures of these “fireworks” of nature. Sometimes when a volcano erupts, a very large wall of melted rock moves down the side of a mountain. It looks like a “river of fire”. Sometimes volcanoes explode, throwing the melted rock and ashes high into the air. But where does this melted rock come from
The earth is made up of many layers. The top layer that we see is called the crust. Under the crust there are many layers of hard rock. But far, far beneath the crust whose rock is so hot, it is soft. In some places it even melts. The melted rock is called magma. Sometimes the magma breaks out to the surface through cracks (裂缝) in the crust. These cracks are volcanoes.
Most people think of mountains when they think of volcanoes. But not every mountain is a volcano. A volcano is simply the opening in the earth from which the magma escapes. The hot magma, or lava as it is called, cools and builds up on the surface of the earth. Over thousands of years, this pile of cooled lava can grow to be very, very big. For example, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is a volcano. It towers more than 16,000 feet above the ground around it.

D. volcano — cracks — magma — crust

I went to Guilin with my family during the winter holidays.
Located in the northeastern part of Guangxi, Guilin is known as one of the top tourist destinations in China for its beauty of natural scenery. First we went to Seven Star Park, which is to the east of the Lijiang River. It is the largest park in Guilin with many kinds of trees and colourful flowers. Then we went to Elephant Trunk Hill, which got its name because the hill looks exactly like an elephant putting its trunk into the river for a drink. There are lots of hills of different shapes in Guilin. Some look like human figures and some like animals.
What a wonderful time we had!
