Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her every success. But part of me didn't. I actually wanted her to fail in some ways because I believe that failure can be good for our learning process. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic (存在问题的) victory. First time success is usually a fluke (侥幸). First time failure, by contrast, is expected to be the natural order of things. Failure is how we learn.
In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken many pots.” If you've spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooking. I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much credibility (可信) their failures gave them.
I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I am aware that one column I write is going to be the worst column. I try my best every day. I have learned to cherish that column. A successful column usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to or saying the same things as anyone else but in a fancy way.
My younger daughter is a trapeze artist. She spent three years putting together a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no point in subjecting (使……服从于) her body to all that stress. She risked failure and great public embarrassment in order to feed her soul.
My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures, and I will want to comfort her. But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time. I hope I can tell her, though, that it's not the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

B. following the time order
C. comparing different opinions

I still clearly remember that day. I was on the side of the road for about four hours with my big jeep. I put signs in the windows that said, “Need a jack (千斤顶).”
As I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He looked at the situation, made a judgment and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife took a large bottle of water for us to wash our hands.
I tried to put $20 in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so I went to give it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked their little girl where they lived, thinking maybe I'd send them a gift. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon now, so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. After that, they were going to pick peaches and then go back home.
After I said goodbye and started going back to my jeep, the girl ran to me and handed me a tamale (玉米粽子) for lunch. I thanked them again and walked back to my jeep. When I opened the tamale, what did I find inside My $20! I ran to the truck and the guy rolled down his window. He started shaking his head, smiled, and with what looked like great concentration said in English, “Today you, tomorrow me.” Then he drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back.
This family, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours to help a stranger while others passed by quietly.
Since then I've helped many people like the Mexican family. I didn't accept their money. Every time I was able to help, I felt as if I was putting something in the bank.

C. Because the author thought the Mexican man's wife was a bit greedy.
D. Because the author thought the wife wanted to use the money to buy peaches.
答案与解析 A 推理判断题。由第三段第一句可推知A项正确。
7.The Mexican man helped the author because he tended to think that ________.
A. it was completely wrong for others to pass by quietly

(2014·荆门高二检测)
It was 1st January, the first day of the year and a holiday for me. What luck! I started by thinking of getting the bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, brief to my polite “Happy New Year”. He nodded and I sat in front of him.
Minutes passed and nothing happened. I had to put my form and brochure in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register. After a few minutes he took my form and from his locker he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking.
After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I said the words, he shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!”
Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God knows how many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done. We do not even feel the need to thank them for being there.
On an instinct (本能) I told him, “Sir, you please have your tea, I am not in a hurry.” This man, who I had been seeing for the last few years, suddenly looked up at me and for the first time we had eye contact — he had never made eye contact earlier. I saw a different person there, another human being who was as hard pressed for time as I always am.
I saw both of us sailing_in_the_same_boat. I felt that he was also missing the small things in life like a hot cup of tea or lying in a warm bed for a few more minutes like me. He gave me a rare smile and said, “It is an everyday affair with me; you are not in a hurry but somebody else will come who will be in a hurry.”
His words really touched me. All the time I thought of him as a robot, someone who was there for my convenience, but today I suddenly felt a strange communication with him.

C. they missed a lot of nice things in life
D. they found out the true meaning of life
答案与解析 A 推理判断题。字面意思是“在同一船上行驶”,所以选项“有一个好的交流”正确。

It's fun to receive presents. It also feels good to give presents to others. So what's the best way to budget your money, shop wisely and spend smartly this holiday season Time for kids asked for advice from Susan Beacham of Money Savvy Generation, a company that teaches money management skills to kids.
“My first tip is to make a list and check it twice,” says Beacham. She suggests that kids talk with their families about whom to include in their gift giving and how much to spend. Start by writing down names, Beacham says. Then put a dollar amount next to each name and add it up. Do you have enough money If not, make changes. And don't forget — not everyone needs a store bought gift. Beacham points out that some of the best presents are free. Add to your list the names of people you want to give gifts of time and talent.
Do the math
Take the list with you to the store and “make sure that you do the math,” says Beacham “If you've spent $30 on someone you were going to spend $25 on, you're going to have to spend $5 less on somebody else.” The key to budgeting is staying within the boundaries you've set for yourself.
Gifts from the heart
The best gifts don't cost a thing. Here are some of Beacham's top gifts ideas.
● For parents, make coupons (礼券) that can be traded for your services, such as doing dishes.
● For grandma, write a note telling her how special she is to you.

Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in the history of the earth. This year is your last chance to change your lifestyle to save the earth.
Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth's water and air, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour dangerous chemicals and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.
By the year 2200, the earth's water was completely polluted. People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids (液体).
So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in the lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrier wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.
By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go Nowhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our space ships. We are still looking for a place to call our home.
So, it is up to you to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late.

A shop wholly run by a robot has been set up in downtown Tokyo, capital of Japan. The shop was set up by a Japan based company.
When a customer comes to the shop, he will be given a pencil and a piece of paper. When he is looking at the shelves for goods, he can write down the number of each thing he wants to buy. Then he may come to a machine, which looks like a bank ATM (Automatic Teller Machine), and press the buttons to tell the machine the numbers and some other information about the goods. The machine will soon give the customer a bill. When the customer puts money into the machine, change will be given back at once, and the words “Thank You for Coming” will appear on the screen of the machine. The robot will select the ordered goods for the customer according to computer center information. The robot, as round as a bucket, is able to decide the weight and size of any goods. It will always take the bigger and heavier goods first before picking up the smaller and lighter ones such as cakes or biscuits. Within half a minute, the robot will make everything ready, and wait for a customer at a certain delivery place. The shop is to meet the needs of the public for the so called “silent purchase”. It means that a customer can do shopping through mail or even an international computer network without facing the shop owner. This will reduce the cost on the part of the shop, and thus lower the price of goods for the customer. The robot now can deal with most goods in a fast and easy way. Only when dealing with those goods needing special care will the robot ask for help.

Dear Editor,
I was surprised to read your recent article on the question of students' part time jobs. You appear to be making a lot of generalizations (归纳) on the basis of just one unfortunate incident (I assure you that not all young people who deliver newspapers are as foolish and dishonest as the two youths mentioned in your article).
The first point I would like to make is that there are many jobs teenagers can do which give them useful experience of the working world. They are brought into contact with a variety of people, often older, and are given experience of expressing themselves clearly and fluently. I am thinking here of jobs such as travel guides and shop assistants.
Another argument for schoolchildren and college students having holiday or weekend jobs is that many parents need the financial assistance. If we take, for example, a family in which the father is unemployed or perhaps a single parent family on a low income, it seems logical and fair that a son or daughter should try to bring money into the family.
One further thing I want to say is that a lot of jobs for the young can be both fun for the people who do them and useful to the community. Young people who help in schools and hospitals often get a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction as well as contributing something valuable to local society.
In conclusion, I would add that when I was a girl, my father said my teens were a time for books, hobbies and academic studies. Thinking back, I feel I would have learned much more — about myself, other people and life in general — if he had allowed me to do a limited amount of real work. Certainly, when she is old enough, I shall encourage my own daughter to do so, rather than waste her time on soap operas and computer games.
Yours faithfully,
Margaret Williams (Mrs)

They wanted to ask people for donations (捐款). The first man they turned to was a person sitting on a chair. They saw him through the door. He was scolding a boy for tearing a piece of unused paper into pieces. He was very angry and warned the boy not to waste paper.

The gentleman smiled and asked them to take a seat. They didn't know how to begin. They looked at one another when the gentleman asked the purpose of their visit. The boys gathered courage and explained to him the purpose of their visit. When they told him of the need to collect money for the orphans, he asked them to wait. As they were waiting, hot snacks were served to them.
The gentleman pulled out an envelope from his pocket, gave it to them and asked them to open it and have a look. To their surprise, when they opened it, they saw a cheque for$l,000,000. He told them to make good use of it and to hand it over to the local schools.
The gentleman knew that they were not going to enter the house when they saw him scolding his boy for wasting paper. He said to them, “I am not mean, but saving what we have is a good habit. London's Chinese community dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limehouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limehouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However, London's Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.
After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limehouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled in a different area — a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.
At first, the new immigrants (移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take aways (外卖) started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.
As time went by, London's Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.

Born with part of his left arm missing, Matthew Cowdrey has shown great strength and courage to succeed and reach unbelievable heights in the world of swimming.
Cowdrey started swimming at the age of five and was determined to not just be as good as any able bodied person, but to be better.
Cowdrey competed in the Paralympics (残奥会) in Athens for the first time and won three gold medals, two silver and two bronze.
He added another five golds and three silver in Beijing, breaking five world records.
After the 2012 London Games, he is the most successful Australian Paralympian, having won 13 Paralympic gold medals and 23 Paralympic medals in total.
Cowdrey's mum, Vivienne, said she was proud of her son, who had forever been an overachiever.
“I don't know how he does a lot of what he does,” she said.
“We were most disappointed when he chose swimming actually; we thought soccer or something like that would be more suitable.”
“Then he chooses something which requires two arms.”
“We always showed him how to do things and gave him ideas on how to do things. But we also let him try things for himself, because if he doesn't do that and everybody does things for him, he'll never learn.”
Cowdrey praised the upbringing (养育) his parents gave him, which taught him to be independent.
Although he achieved great success, Cowdrey said he didn't think about his achievements too much.
“I've always said that I just wanted to be remembered as someone who worked hard at what he did to reach his potential,” he said.
“A few of my goals are outside of Paralympic sport and are in able bodied swimming.”
“I'm not at the point now where I can even appreciate what I've done so far.”

Zhao Changle, a farmer who had never heard of nude modeling before, seized the opportunity when he saw a notice asking for a part time model. Zhao said he has a son and a daughter, both of whom have been diagnosed with serious diseases. His son, now 22, was diagnosed with secondary aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血) at the age of 11. His daughter was diagnosed with leukemia (白血病) five years ago.
Though heavily burdened by the pressure to earn money for his children's treatment — he had already spent over 600,000 yuan, Zhao said he will not give up, even though a doctor had told him in early April that his daughter was basically cured. “I'll continue to work. He was struggling (费劲) to tie his shoes. I was struggling with whether I should help him. I did, and he was grateful. “Thank you,” he said.
“I'm glad I could help. I just thought it would be easier for me to reach,” I said.
He was a disabled man, and forced to look down most of the time. His arms and legs were twisted (扭曲的) terribly, and he couldn't do what the rest of us would consider easy tasks. He always managed to look up to see how you reacted to his words, however,he had a big smile, making me feel comfortable.
I was still on my knees by his wheelchair.

“Thanks. No one ever complimented (赞美) me on them before,” I said.
“No one has the same view of the world as I do,” he replied.
“Tell me about the world as you see it,” I said smiling.
“Most people can see if someone is comfortable with them or not in their eyes. I see it in their feet,” he said. “If people keep moving their feet, I just let them go, because I know they're impatient with me. I don't want to make people uncomfortable.”

“I could see your compassion. And then you came down to my level. I was the one who was nervous,” he said. “I don't normally have someone look me in the eye.”
“They don't know what they're missing,” I told him.
“My old face is nothing to brag (自夸) about,” he said.

We had great fun in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )growing and learning. Every year we were taken to different places for our school picnics. I was never able to go to these tours but I enjoyed every word of the stories told by my friends. When I was in Grade Eight, I won a couple of prizes in drawing and school competitions. We were also given many projects as class assignments that helped all of us to know more about the subject. I was very fond of cricket (now in football). My friends and I played cricket in the school campus after school, but at the same time, we all used to get lots of scolding from our headmaster.2·1·c·n·j·y
Every Saturday we us ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed to have our P.T. exercise, and frankly speaking, nobody in my class, even me, had ever liked this. As I reached Grade Nine I realised that I should concentrate on my studies as the next year I was going to take my Board exams. The most memorable day in my life was the day when we held the farewell party for our seniors. Well, now I am in Grade Ten and all set to write my Boards in March. Whenever I recollect all these incidents of school life, I feel very happy and in everybody's school life, I think there are many ups_and_downs that mould (浇铸) one's life. School is a place where all of us learn to care and share. “School” is not just a place, but also it is a large dome (圆屋顶) made up of knowledge, love and affection. I think in everybody's success, school plays a key role. I can describe my school in “Three S's”, they are: Small, Sweet and Simple.21·世纪*教育网

After record growth in over 40 countries, Universal Robots' lightweight robotic arms are now making their US debut (首次露面) at this year's International Manufacturing Trade Show (IMTS) in Chicago.
The UR5 robotic arm made by Universal Robots has been declared “The world's most innovative (创新的) robot” by The International Federation of Robotics and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Robotics and Automation Society. The US audience will now see the award winning robot — along with its big brother UR10 — for the first time.
The UR5 and UR10 robotic arms are aimed at small sized companies that thought robots were too expensive and hard to operate in existing production. The robotic arms are easily moved around the production area and present a simple user interface (界面) which lets employees quickly operate them.
Esben Ostergaard, founder and CTO (Chief Technical Officer) at Universal Robots, explains how the robots were designed to be as user friendly as possible:
“We decided to make programming easy by developing a user interface combined with a ‘teaching function’ allowing the user to simply grab the robot arm and show it how a movement should be performed. The robot can work in any production process very quickly. Our experience shows this is generally done in a few hours.”
The robots weigh as little as 40 pounds, making it possible for them to be moved around the production area to perform different tasks. The UR5 can handle a load of up to 5 kilos (11 pounds), the UR10, 10 kilos (22 pounds). As soon as an employee touches the robot arm and uses a force of at least 150 Newton, the robot arm will automatically stop operating.
语篇解读 本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了两种灵巧的、极具价格吸引力的UR机器人。
1.According to the text, the UR5 robotic arm ________.
A. was designed by IEEE
B. is aimed at small companies
C. has won a number of awards
D. made its appearance in 40 countries
答案与解析 B 细节理解题。根据第三段的“The UR5 and UR10 robotic arms are aimed at small sized companies”可知,这款机器人面向的是小型企业。
2.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. the programme
B. the user interface
C. the robot arm
D. the “teaching function”
3.What do we know from the last two paragraphs
A. The UR10 is heavier than the UR5.
B. The robots perform one task at a time.
C. The robots can finish a task in a few minutes.
D. The UR10 can handle twice as much weight as the UR5.
答案与解析 D 细节理解题。根据最后一段的“The UR5 can handle a load of up to 5 kilos (11 pounds), the UR10, 10 kilos (22 pounds)”可知,UR10可以承载两倍于UR5的重量。
4.What's the text mainly about
A. An introduction to Universal Robots' new robots.
B. The difference between the UR5 and the UR10.
C. Why the UR5 and the UR10 were invented.
D. How to operate the UR5 and UR10.
答案与解析 A 主旨大意题。本文是一篇新闻报道。第一段的“Universal Robots' lightweight robotic arms are now making their US debut at this year's International Manufacturing Trade Show (IMTS) in Chicago”就点明了本文的主题,因此本文主要介绍Universal Robots发明的两种新型UR机器人。
B
There's no such thing as a natural robot. Robots aren't alive, they don't grow, and they need people and technology to get around. But inventors of these machines don't ignore nature.
The inventors of a new robot called GoQBot drew inspiration from caterpillars (毛毛虫). To escape enemies or other dangerous situations, some caterpillars roll away. They do this trick in a second and make a fast getaway — reaching speed of nearly 8 inches per second!
“You touch the animal and you don't know where it's gone. It's really fast,” Huai Ti Lin said. Lin invented GoQBot while working on his Ph.D. in biology at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. He is now a researcher at Harvard University.
On the outside, Lin's GoQBot looks a little bit like a large caterpillar. It is light green and just under four inches long. On the inside, however, GoQBot looks less like its inspiration. It is made of a rubbery material called silicone and has metal coils (线圈) inside.
When electrical currents travel through those metal coils, GoQBot rolls up and races away like the caterpillar.
Robots that crawl on many legs are slowed down because they have so many joints. Joints are spots where different parts come together, like people's knees. A robot that rolls, on the other hand, can reach high speed quickly.
The new robot is an example of biomimetic technology, which includes devices (装置) that imitate something in nature. Lin invented GoQBot to better understand how caterpillars move. In a recent study, he and his colleagues report that they've already started to learn about the bugs' ability to roll.
But there's one way in which GoQBot is decidedly not like a caterpillar. No matter how much current Lin and his colleagues pump through the coils, GoQBot will never change into a butterfly!
语篇解读 本文介绍了一种新型的仿生机器人——GoQBot。
5.We learn from the text that GoQBot ________.
A. has many joints like other robots
B. will roll away when touched
C. is not a robot in fact
D. takes inspiration from nature
答案与解析 D 细节理解题。根据文章第一段及第二段的“The inventors of a new robot called GoQBot drew inspiration from caterpillars”可知选D项。
6.The biggest difference between GoQBot and a caterpillar is that ________.
A. they have different colors
B. they have different sizes
C. GoQBot moves more quickly
D. GoQBot can't change its form
答案与解析 D 细节理解题。根据文章第四段可知,GoQBot从外观上看与毛毛虫很像;从文章最后一段可知,GoQBot再模仿毛毛虫,也不能像毛毛虫一样变成蝴蝶。
7.The last but one paragraph mainly discusses ________.
A. the inventors of GoQBot
B. the way caterpillars move
C. the usefulness of the invention
D. the future of biomimetic technology
答案与解析 C 段落大意题。本段谈到发明GoQBot的初衷及目前利用其进行研究所取得的进展,故选C项。
8.Which of the following is NOT true
A. The robot crawls faster than rolls.
B. The robot looks like the caterpillar in many ways.
C. Lin didn't fully understand caterpillars before he invented the robot.
D. When caterpillars roll away, they can run as quickly as 8 inches per second.
答案与解析 A 细节理解题。文章倒数第三段说机器人用很多条腿爬行会减慢速度,因为关节太多了。而团起身来就能达到很快的速度,可见A项是错误的,故选A。
