Just after World War ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Ⅱ the IOC decided that the Olympic Games would bring nations together again. As London had been selected to host the cancelled 1944 Games, the IOC decided to offer the 1948 Games to London. London accepted the offer and set about preparing the venues (场地) and all the other things that hosting the Olympic Games needed.
With less than two ye ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ars to get the Games ready, it was a great achievement in itself that the Games were ready on time. The budget that was assigned to host the Games was £600 000, quite a small sum in comparison to the Games of today that cost billions of pounds.
In 1948, large part ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s of London lay in ruins. Food and building materials were in short supply. It was decided that the Games would be held with no new venues or athlete villages being built.2·1·c·n·j·y
The participating ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) nations united to make the Games a success. Athletes were housed in barracks (兵营). School dormitories and even private houses were used to accommodate the athletes from visiting nations.
At mealtimes, athlet ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )es were given increased rations, the same as those received by British workers in the essential industries, like mineworkers, which meant 5 467 calories a day, instead of the normal 2 600 calories a day.
The spectator ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s (观众) who came to the Games had to bring their own food, as there were no facilities to provide catering at any of the sites. Even getting to the venues was a problem. The famous London Red Buses were used, and military vehicles, many of which were driven by women volunteers, were also used to transport spectators and athletes to the venues.21·世纪*教育网
Despite these p ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )roblems, the Games' opening ceremony was held on 29th July, 1948, at Wembley Stadium. During the opening ceremony a message was shown on the giant scoreboard. It read: “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”www.21-cn-jy.com

单元测评(一) Unit 1 A land of diversity
(时间:90分钟 满分:110分)
第一部分 阅读理解(共两节;满分30分)
第一节 (共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
California's complex ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) and dynamic transportation system is in part both the cause and the result of the restless mobility of Californians, who tend to move and travel frequently. There is one of the greatest concentrations of motor vehicles in the world and the most extensive system of multilane freeways in California. However, freeway construction has declined since the 1970s because of public opposition.
Light rail transit sy ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )stems were largely discontinued in California cities after World War Ⅱ. However, because of increasing traffic congestion (拥塞), many have been reintroduced or newly constructed. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in and around San Francisco was constructed in the early 1970s and expanded in the following decades in response to growth in remote areas. A San Diego trolley (无轨电车) system, first built in the late 1970s as a link to the Mexican border, was extended in the late 1980s. Work on a subway system in Los Angeles began in the early 1980s. By 2003 a network of light rail lines ran through the city. Now there are rail links between downtown Los Angeles and many remote areas, including major tourist sites, airports and beaches. With an ever growing population, more attention was paid to the development of mass transit systems, such as the light rail and the subway, in California in the early 21st century.
The transport of good ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s in California is carried out mainly by trucks, but the canals and waterways are also used to transport goods. Shipping across the Pacific basin is centered at the Long Beach, Los Angeles ports, whose cargo (货运量) is several times greater than that handled by the Oakland, San Francisco, and Richmond ports in northern California. Long Beach is one of the world's most important cargo ports.
Air transport ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in California has increased greatly. The air lines connecting San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego create greater traffic than those linking Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston on the East Coast. C
I remember a day wh ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )en I was a little kid. I was making a sandwich in the kitchen when I noticed the date on one of the wine bottles.
“Dad, dad!” I cried. “This wine is too old to drink.”
“Son, hold on,” he said.
“No, you can't drink ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) this tonight! This bottle of wine was made 10 years ago.”
“Wait, let me tell you ...”
“Would you like me to throw it away for you?” I asked.
“Son, wait a second,” ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he said. “Son, some wines get better over time. The longer you wait to drink it, the better it will be. Although this may seem strange, it is true.”
When I was young, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )I didn't have any understanding of what this meant, but now, this would have been very helpful to remember as I went through my teenage years.
In our society, we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )forget this simple rule: The longer you want for certain things, the better they will be. But we want the best job as quickly as possible; we want to graduate from college in as few years as possible; we even speed through our homework just to chat with friends. When we do this, we lose something of great importance.
We all want to get t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o the next step so quickly that perhaps we don't get ready enough to get there. This has a negative effect on our society. When trying to go to the right college, we will do anything to get in and when we rush through our classwork, we may not study enough for the test, and end up failing. We need to be ready for whatever comes, ready for the unexpected. Wine gets better over time, so do the things in our paths of life.

Micro blog has ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )become more and more popular in China and part of our life. It is very convenient for people to express their feeling instantly at any time. Besides, it provides a chance for people to release their inner stress. By showing their heart felt emotions on the micro blog, their friends may also know about their condition and can offer timely response. However, micro blog can also be potentially dangerous as it may give away people's privacy and other significant information. And sometimes it is a total waste of time. In my opinion, micro blog provides us with some concerns as well as emotional comfort and large quantities of information, so we should be careful while using it.【出处:21教育名师】

I was a 16 year ol ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d kid in a new school. My school did not offer summer courses so I had to take my course at an alternative school in the city. It was an experience I will never forget. I was not concerned with making friends. I was there to get credit (学分) for a course that I should have received credit for the previous semester. It was my doing that landed me in the situation and it was important that I understood this.
The fees were low ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )est but the experience was amazing. I enjoyed. I didn't miss the day. The course was from Monday to Friday for an entire month. I passed the course with an A. I was thrown into an awkward situation and actually enjoyed it. My friends didn't even know I took the course. Most of them were still sleeping by the time my course ended each day.
Awkward situations ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )are so important for personal growth. This situation made me feel more independent. I made friends. I finally understood what sacrifice and hard work were all about. While attending college, I remembered how much I enjoyed summer school and I chose to take summer school in my first three years of college. Some kids get pushed too much but some don't get pushed enough. I was never pushed enough.
Enable your chil ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dren to struggle for success. If your child needs summer school you explain to them why it's important. Some parents are surprised by the situation and may want to be more involved in their children's education. Follow through and follow up.21·世纪*教育网

Noah is the nam ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e given in advance to the clone of a dead gaur, a rare type of endangered wild ox found in India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. The new Noah is expected to be born any day now to Bessie, a cow living on a farm in Iowa Cows have given birth to gaurs before, but Advanced Cell Technologies (ACT), a small biotechnology company in Massachusetts, is using a cross species technique to clone a different species.

Other scientists argue that such approaches are unlikely to make a significant contribution to the support of the endangered species, especially if their habitats have been destroyed.
If Bessie's little g ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )aur is delivered safely, the birth will come as an encouragement to many biologists in the US and Europe who are involved. There are many idiom ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.21·世纪*教育网
As the crow flies
When a bird flie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance “as the crow flies”, they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads.
As Dan and his ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) mom drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side. Dan asked, “How far is it to the beach?”
“It's only about a q ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uarter of a mile as the crow flies,” his mother said.
Blow hot and cold
In one of Aesop's Fa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )bles, a man blows on his fingers to warm them up and then blows on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is very different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold.
“Is Felicia going to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) try out for the soccer team this year?” Stacy asked.
“I don't know,” T ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ricia replied. “Last week she was saying yes, but this week she's saying no. She's really blowing hot and cold.”
Break the ice
Nowadays peop ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )le use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation.
It was the first ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying, “Hey, where's everybody from?”
Bury the hatchet
In Native American cul ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.
Colin could not e ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )xcuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said, “Colin, can't we bury the hatchet?”

When I was growing up ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in the 1930s, the period of the Great Depression, I didn't think of our family as poor, even though we never seemed to have money. I lived on a small farm in Pennsylvania with my parents, two elder sisters, and a younger brother. We had an old horse, a cow, a few pigs, some chickens, and a big garden. Food was not a problem. We had our own supply of milk, meat, eggs, fresh vegetables, and Momma's homemade bread.
As a boy of nine, I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )had only a vague (模糊的) idea of what it meant to live during hard times. The weekly newspaper would carry pictures of people standing in line for bread, and the evening broadcast would tell about the huge number of jobless people and their hardships. But these reports referred to people in the cities, and we lived in the country. We never went to bed hungry, and we didn't stand in line for bread.
Although my fat ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )her was fortunate to have a job at the feed mill (饲料加工厂), eighteen dollars a week was only enough to pay the electric bill and to buy necessities. Momma earned a few dollars baking pies and bread.
To make nightclothes, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Momma used the cotton bags in which the food for our chickens came. It wasn't until years later when my high school class went on an overnight trip that I got my first store bought nightwear.
When a piece ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of clothing was worn out, it wasn't thrown away. First, all the buttons were removed, grouped by size and color, and put in cans or glass jars. Then the clothing was examined, and the best parts were saved for making rugs (地毯). Almost nothing in our house was thrown away.
Although we tend ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to think of recycling as something fairly new, in the 1930s it was part of everyday life. “Waste not, want not” was a familiar and often repeated phrase during those Depression years.

Going green seems t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o be a fad (时尚) for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can't really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.

I learned about th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e Pygmalion Effect (皮格马利翁效应) when I was 7 years old at Riverdale School in Palmerston North and I copied Melissa Crawford's answers in a spelling test. Before that I was average at school but after that, because Melissa Crawford was smart, and I got all the right answers, I got put in all the smart kids groups. From then I did really well at school because it was believed by the teachers that I would and I also got grouped with the smart kids. This experience that occurred at my primary school shows just how important the Pygmalion Effect is in terms of being around mentors (导师) that expect that you're going to do well and also being around people who are smart.
The Pygmalion ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Effect is one principle you want to use if you want to make money fast. Have mentors that expect you will make money fast and as an extra boost hang around, copy and learn from other people who are also making money fast.
Yesterday th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is site had over 5 000 unique visitors and the traffic to it is increasing all the time. A year ago I contacted a group of people who got lots of traffic in their sites and I learned from them. Truthfully, I don't know if they expected me to start getting decent traffic to websites but I imagined they did so they might as well have.
So there you have it, the Pygmalion Effect.

In 1595, Europe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )an explorers first reached the South Pacific. As they explored, they found islands where people who used simple Stone Age tools lived. The Europeans wondered how the islands were settled thousands of years ago.
In the late 18th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) century, Captain James Cook and his team of scientists, including Joseph Banks, studied the Polynesian cultures. The word Polynesia comes from the Greek for “many islands”. Cook and Banks discovered that the languages on the Polynesian islands were very similar. They also found strong similarities between these Polynesian languages and the languages in Southeast Asia.
Between World Wars Ⅰ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) and Ⅱ, many scientists went to the South Pacific. They were looking for evidence to support the Southeast Asia theory. They wanted to find out migration routes. Findings were debated, and challenges to the theory arose. The best known came from Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. In the mid 1940s, his theory was that South America was the point of origin. He held that the major migration route moved westward. Further evidence came in the form of Lapita pottery (陶器) that had been discovered on several islands. Domesticated (被驯养的) animals and crops were also found on some islands. They were all linked to Southeast Asia, except the sweet potato. This Polynesian basic food was native to South America. It was the only real support for the South America theory.
Most scientists ag ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ree that the evidence strongly supports a major eastward migration. It might start from Southeast Asia to New Guinea, in the southwest Pacific Ocean, north of Australia. From there the route led southeast through the islands known as Micronesia and Melanesia. From these islands, the route extended (延伸) farther east to the Polynesian islands of Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. These islands then made voyages farther south, north, and east. They possibly reached as far east as South America, which would account for the sweet potato. More studies are needed to fully explore the routes of these early masters of the sea.

答案与解析
36.at at least“至少”。
39.have been ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )discovered 所给词在句中作谓语,且根据上下文语境可知该空应用现在完成时,discover与主语more than 20 bronze products为被动关系,故用现在完成时的被动语态,填have been discovered。
40.their 空格处应填限定词,根据语境可知此处表中国人的祖先,故填their。
41.it 根据固定句式“it+be+形容词+to do”结构可知该空填it。
42.any any“任何一个”,用于否定句中。句意:他们还不知道任何一个墓主人的身份。
43.a 该空填定冠词a,表示“一个”。
44.if if引导条件状语从句,表“如果”。
