One of the world's leading solar energy firms, Gehrlicher Solar AG of Germany, and Merk Solar Energy from Turkey, which operates as part of the Akfel Group, announced on Wednesday the establishment of Gehrlicher Merk Solar Energy to produce electricity using Turkey's vast solar power potential.
Speaking at the press conference in Istanbul in Feb. 2012, Klaus Gehrlicher, founder and CEO of Gehrlicher Solar AG, said that Turkey has become an attractive market for solar power due to the country's rapidly growing energy need. Gehrlicher was impressed with Turkey's Energy Minister for recognizing Turkey's potential for solar energy production.
Gehrlicher Merk Solar Energy head mer Cihan Karaman compared the decrease in opportunities in European markets with the great potential for solar power energy production in Turkey, especially in the southern region. He said that the Akfel Group has the largest solar energy portfolio (投资组合) in the country, but the projects have been relatively small. Karaman noted that the new company will focus on southern Turkey, where much of the land is well suited for the production of solar power.
He also said the new company will benefit from the eighteen years of experience of Gehrlicher Solar AG. This relationship will also aid them in their search for financing. The German company will benefit from the local knowledge and domestic network of Merk Solar Energy as they expand in the Turkish market.
Following a year of negotiations (谈判), the two companies signed the deal on Wednesday with equal shareholder rights. Gehrlicher concluded that, as a pioneer in the photovoltaic (光电池的) market, “we know the demands and needs of investors in the market and we want to draw their attention to Turkey.”

I always hated the first day of school, but what I hated even more was the “idea” of the first day of school.
All summer long, it sat in the back of my mind, preventing my relaxation. At the sight of “Back to School Sale!” advertisements in magazines or on TV, I'd shout “it's not even August yet!” disgustedly. As July gave way to August, my classmates, usually girls, would start chatting about their new clothes. I'd plug (塞住) my ears and go back to my video game, bicycle or book.
Before I knew it, though, I'd be facing the last week of August. At the beginning of that week, my mom would drop a pile of fresh notebooks and pencils outside my bedroom. I'd step over them each morning, pretending they weren't there, until Sunday, my final morning of freedom, when I'd finally stuff them into my backpack.
Meanwhile, I'd try to pack as much fun as possible into my summer's final hours.
But when the first day of school actually came, it was never as bad as I had expected.
First of all, I always had an A on that day; I knew that I was at the top of my class, and all I had to do was work hard to stay there. At the same time, I knew that I'd been given the chance to make new friends, and amaze new teachers.
I would have denied (否认) it at the time, but secretly I preferred the rigid (刻板的) structure of school days to the unlimited freedom of summer vacation days.
I pretended that all I cared about was hanging out and relaxing, but deep down I was — and still am — a student.
1.The underlined word “disgustedly” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. angrily B. hopelessly
C. surprisingly D. disappointedly
2.Which of the following about the author is TRUE according to the passage
A. He was worried about going back to school all summer.
B. He spent all his summer time playing video games.
C. He was usually busy preparing notebooks and pencils during the last week of August.
D. He was not interested in hearing girls talk about their new clothing.
由第二段最后的“go back to my video game, bicycle or book”可以排除B。
3.When the school days did come, the author ________.
A. began working hard to satisfy his parents
B. missed his free and relaxing summer vacation days
C. found that actually he also loved school days
D. had fun playing games with new friends

Although 80% of the public have stated their opposition to cloning pet animals such as cats and dogs, companies still try to make a business out of selling cloned pets. These pet cloning companies make use of the grief of people who have lost their beloved pets, leading them to believe that their pets can be “brought back to life” or “copied” through new cloning technology.
However, there is no assurance that a cloned animal will be the same as the original physically, let alone in terms of behavior or personality. In addition, more than 96 percent of cloning attempts fail, and according to the CEO of one pet cloning company, 15 ~ 45 percent of cloned cats will die within 30 days. The Roslin Institute, which produced the first cloned animal, posted a statement on its website stating, “... the supposed benefit of cloning a pet is an illusion (假象) but the harm to the other animals involved would be real ...”
Behind each cute picture of a cloned cat or dog lie hundreds of animals that were kept in laboratory cages, receiving bad treatment during various experiments. For all that, you end up with a cloned animal that may experience serious health problems. Also, while pet cloning companies are charging customers up to $150,000 for a cloned pet, millions of homeless animals of the same species are available in animal shelters for around $100. Unfortunately, most of these animals are killed for no one brings them home.
With our No Pet Cloning movement, we seek to protect both animals and people from harm. We worked hard until the only US companies that sold cloned animals closed their doors. Currently, cat and dog cloning experiments for pet sales are only being conducted in South Korea.
4.What's the Roslin Institute's opinion on pet cloning
A. The Roslin Institute thinks it is harmless.
B. The Roslin Institute thinks it cannot be avoided.
C. The Roslin Institute does not support it.
D. The Roslin Institute refuses to make comments.
5.We can learn from the third paragraph that the writer thinks ________.
A. pets from shelters usually have health problems
B. buying cloned pets is a waste of money
C. cloned pets are better than pets from shelters
D. pets from shelters should be used for experiments
从第三段的“while pet cloning companies are charging customers up to $150 000 for a cloned pet, millions of homeless animals of the same species are available in animal shelters for around $100.”
6.The No Pet Cloning movement has succeeded in ________.
A. asking US pet cloning companies to move to South Korea
B. stopping some businessmen earning money by selling cloned pets
C. educating the public on the disadvantages of the cloning technology
D. persuading 80% of the public to protest against pet cloning
活动的成就列于最后一段中,从“We worked hard until the only US companies that sold cloned animals closed their doors.”
7.What would be the best title for the passage
A. Animal Cloning Technology Is Not Perfect
B. Pet Cloning Is a Profitable Industry
C. Animals Shouldn't Be Used for Experiments
D. Pet Cloning Should Be Stopped

When a Swedish ship that sank in 1628 was recovered from the port of Stockholm, historians and scientists were overjoyed with the chance to examine the remains of the past. The ship construction showed how ships were built and operated during the seventeenth century. In this way, artifacts, objects made by human beings, provided a picture of daily life almost 400 years ago.
Underwater archaeology — the study of ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bodies of water is really a product of the last 50 years. The rapid growth of this new area of study has occurred because of the invention of better diving equipment. Besides the Swedish ship wreck (残骸), underwater archaeologists have made more exciting discoveries such as the 5 000 year old boats in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater archaeology can provide facts about the past. In ancient ports all over the world are ships sunken in the past 6 000 years. There are also sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling of people's way of life and their systems of trade in ancient times. Underwater archaeologists want to study these objects to add to the world's knowledge of history, but they have to fight two enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters who dive for ancient artifacts that they can sell to collectors. Once sold, these objects are lost to experts. The second enemy is dredging machines (挖掘机) often used to repair ports. These machines destroy wrecks and artifacts or bury them deeper under sand and mud. By teaching the public about the importance of underwater “museums” of the past, archaeologists are hoping to get support from laws to protect underwater treasures.

The discovery of a dwarfed (矮个的) “human being” who lived in Flores, Indonesia (印度尼西亚), up to 18 000 years ago is changing the way we think about the human family. This “Flores Human” was three feet tall and her brain was smaller than that of the average chimp (黑猩猩), yet she and her relatives apparently lived fully human lives. They seemed to have made tools, worked together to find food and cook it,and perhaps even buried the dead with ceremony.
It was a big surprise to find tools associated with the new human family member. The tools are like those formerly seen only with European fossils (化石) from our own species, Homo sapiens (智人), and the oldest of them were made 94 000 years ago. Homo sapiens is thought to have arrived in the island about 40 000 years ago, much too late to be responsible for the tools. If this_tiny_human made the tools, then the inside structure (结构) of its brain must have been more like our own than a chimp's, despite being just a third the size of ours.
This “new human” was suspected to be a dwarfed branch of Homo erectus (直立人). When creatures are separated in regions with rare resources but few enemies, being big is a disadvantage, and evolution tends to shrink them, a process known as island dwarfing. Could natural selection make a human smaller while keeping — even improving — mental ability Quite possibly, believes Christopher Wills of the University of California.
5.What did the dwarfed “human beings” look like
A. They were not small.
B. They were very tall.
C. They were 30 inches tall.
D. They were 36 inches tall.
根据第一段第二句“This ‘Flores Human’ was three feet tall and her brain was smaller ...”
6.According to the passage, “Flores Human” ________.
A. lived a partly human life
B. was a branch of Homo sapiens
C. used tools before Homo sapiens arrived
D. had a brain as a common chimp's
由第二段第一句“It was a major surprise to find tools associated with the new human family member. The tools ... ago.”
7.The underlined part “this tiny human” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. a chimp B. Flores Human
C. Homo sapiens D. Homo erectus
结合第一段的“a dwarfed ‘human being’ ... This ‘Flores Human’ ...”,以及第三段的“This ‘new human’ was ...”可看出,this tiny human意指“Flores Human”。

Author Jeff Kinney tells the Wall Street Journal that he helped produce the film of his book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. “I was there from the beginning,” he said.
Asked about the relationship between the film and the book, the author said, “I think what the movie adds to the book is the really strong emotion. Greg and Rowley are best friends. In the film, you really care about that. You really feel connected with these characters. I don't think that's there so much in the book. So, I think of the movie as the book plus.”
The author has heard from teachers, librarians, and parents that many children who don't normally like to read have picked up and enjoyed his books. Mr. Kinney said, “If there's something that I feel proud of, it's that these books are getting reluctant_readers to read and hopefully turning them into lifelong readers.”
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is about a sixth grade boy, Greg Heffley, and his first year at a new school. The character faces a series of encounters (遭遇) with new social rules and expectations among his peers (同龄人), and like all children growing into adolescence, he doesn't always fit in the way he'd like. Many readers find the first book especially funny, though there are a series of four Wimpy Kid books, with a fifth to be published soon.
Asked whether he will continue writing about Greg Heffley, Mr. Kinney replied that after the next book comes out, he will need to make a creative decision whether to keep writing Wimpy Kid books or turn to another subject.
The movie is adapted by Jackie Filgo, Jeff Filgo, Jeff Judah, and Gabe Sachs, and is directed by Thor Freudenthal. It starred Zachary Gordon as Greg and Robert Capron as Rowley Jefferson and opened on March 19,2010.

Grand Opening
Bentwood Truck Museum
Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 a.m..
After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.
During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.
You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.
Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.

Manager,
I am an exchange student from China. Yesterday, I went to your cinema to see a film. The film was very well, but I did not enjoy it because there were some problem in the cinema.
First, the film was delayed as there were so much advertisements at the beginning. It was rather annoyed. Second, the sound of the film was too loud that I could hardly bear. The EXIT signs could not be seen clearly, which presented potential safety problems. If something terribly should happen, it will be difficult for people to get out quickly.
As a visitor to your city, I'm disappointed with my experience in your cinema. I am writing a letter in the hope that you can consider on these problems and make some improvements.
Yours faithfully,

Snow fell past the men's basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. There was also some snow on the balloon, and that made it very heavy. It began to go down towards the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard. They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling; so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake below and made a black hole in the ice.www-2-1-cnjy-com
At last they pulled t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he box into the basket. It was still snowing; so they climbed to get away from the snow. They rose to 5 100 meters! Everything became icy. Imagine making your o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )wn bicycle. You can do it at the Bamboo Bike Studio in New York City. The people who work at the studio teach customers how to build their own bikes from bamboo. “Bamboo is very user friendly,” says Marty Odlin, one of the studio's owners. “There's no way that a non expert could build a steel bike within a weekend. But with bamboo, it's possible.”www.21-cn-jy.com
The Bamboo Bike Studi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o is also helping set up factories in Ghana, a country in western Africa. The factories will produce inexpensive bamboo bikes in large numbers. Bamboo bikes are a na ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tural fit in Ghana because bamboo grows everywhere throughout the country. It also grows in many places in the United States. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. It can grow up to 40 inches in a single day. And bamboo has qualities that make it as good as steel for building a durable, comfortable vehicle. A bamboo bike, says Odlin, is “the perfect everyday bike”.【版权所有:21教育】
In Ghana, bikes ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e in high demand. Few people have enough money to afford a car, so bikes are used to transport most of the country's food and material goods. The people of Ghana are also too poor to buy traditional steel bikes. But producing bicycles from bamboo is a good alternative.
Back in New York, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Odlin has helped customers aged 12 to 70 build bamboo bikes. It takes about a weekend to learn how to put one together. Odlin says he also wants his customers to develop a new respect for what they own. “It requires patience to build these bikes,” he says. “It causes people to appreciate the products. 7.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about

Big Ben, the Queen, a plate of ham and eggs — no, no, no. If you're looking for a symbol of Britain, only one thing passes the test — the umbrella.
Now, I know what you're thinking — we have rain in China and we have umbrellas too. Certainly, I will never forget the way it rained when I lived in Beijing: the streets became instant (立即的) rivers and the sky flashed with lightning for hours on end. People dove (冲) for cover under bin bags, the shops were emptied of their plastic ponchos (斗篷) within seconds, and I found myself soaked (浸透) from head to foot, my poorly chosen skirt and T shirt now totally see through.
This would never have happened in Britain. For one thing, during my year in Beijing, it only really rained about 10 times. But although we never get a Beijing style washout in London, the drizzle (毛毛雨) that does fall is all but constant. Even when the sky is perfectly blue, you can be sure it's going to cloud over and start drizzling again within the hour.
And when it does, there is chaos. Trains stop, drains (下水道) block, and buses break down as if this was the first time the local authorities had seen this wet stuff coming out of the clouds.
So — as with so many things in the UK — it's up to ordinary people to sort themselves out. No self respecting Briton will ever leave home without his “brolly” — as the umbrella is affectionately (亲切地) known.
A brolly has hundreds of uses, even on rare rain free days. A real gentleman of London will use his umbrella as a walking stick. A traditional game of cricket (板球) can be played using an umbrella as a bat (球棒). Nor do you ever have to be afraid of robbers — your umbrella doubles as a defensive (防卫的) weapon.
There is no brolly more British than my own. But it's not from London or Manchester or anywhere in the UK. It was a gift from my Chinese teacher — in Beijing.
How fitting that my No. 1 symbol of Britishness — like almost everything in Britain — was made in China.
1.The author mentioned her rainy weather experience in Beijing to show that ________.
A. many foreigners have embarrassing moments living in Beijing
B. the rain in Beijing is usually much heavier than the rain in London
C. British people are more used to rainy weather than Chinese people
D. both Beijingers and Londoners have unpleasant experiences with sudden rain
2.The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 3 refers to “________”.
A. people getting extremely wet on rainy days
B. sudden rain leading to traffic troubles
C. people being well prepared on rainy days
D. it only raining a dozen times per year
根据上文的“soaked from head to foot, my poorly chosen skirt and T shirt now totally see through”可知作者指的是浑身湿透的尴尬经历。
3.The underlined word “chaos” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. doubt B. excitement
C. joy D. disorder
Trains stop, drains block, and buses break down都会造成混乱,故选D项。
4.What is the main idea of the article
A. Beijing style rain and London style drizzles both bring chaos.
B. Everything in Britain was made in China.
C. Why the umbrella is the best symbol of Britain.
D. What British people use a brolly for.
B
One Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we'd had for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there a couple of months ago and it was a cloudy cold day. Sunday couldn't have been more different — clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still -25℃.
Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we'd been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling — more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.
Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We'd been told that then they were nursing their chicks and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but_that_didn't_seem_to_be_the_case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose for photos.
Before heading back, we spend a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically since our last visit.
5.When did the trip most probably happen
A. On a cloudy Sunday.
B. On a snowy Sunday.
C. On a summer Sunday.
D. On a winter Sunday.
6.It can be inferred from the second paragraph that the six people ________.
A. felt a little nervous
B. felt a little excited
C. got bored with following their field assistant
D. were left all by themselves on the Antarctic base
7.What does the writer mean by saying “but that didn't seem to be the case”?
A. They were told a lie.
B. A wrong decision was made.
C. The truth was the contrary.
D. They didn't believe what they were told.
8.The six people did the following during the trip EXCEPT ________.
A. feeding the penguins
B. taking pictures of the penguins
C. enjoying watching flying seabirds
D. watching the young penguins

1.D 由下文的there was only one train a day back to my ... it had already left可知,“我”乘坐的火车一天只有一趟,而且那天它已经开走了,因此是“不幸地(unfortunately)”。
2.C 由下文的which took me to my hometown可知,此处是说回“老家(hometown)”的火车一天只有一趟。
I thought I'd take a ride可知,由于要坐的火车已经开走,“我”就想搭便车回家。
4.C 由but一词的转折和下文的standing for hours in the sun可知,“我”等了三个小时也没有一辆车为“我”“停下(stopped)”。
5.D 由下文的help me find a lift home afterwards可知,一个叫Gordon的男人给了“我”帮助,“尽管(although)”不是让“我”乘坐他的便车。
6.B 由下文的he made us sandwiches可推测,Gordon看到“我”在太阳下站了好几个小时,猜测“我”一定是“饿(hungry)”了。
7.C 由下文的but he told me I was safe可知,陌生人邀请吃饭,“我”对此感到“怀疑(doubtful)”,但他说“我”很安全。
8.A 由下文的the man who ... flagged down a car all those years ago. offer to do sth.“主动提出做某事”。
9.C 由上文的come back to his house for lunch可知,“我”是去Gordon的“家里(house)”。
10.A 由下文的the man who ... flagged down a car all those years ago. It was Gordon可知,Gordon挥手拦截的是“小汽车(car)”。
11.C 由本句的my husband didn't believe in ...和as I could never offer them the lift可知,本段意思与上文有转折关系。故选用However。
15.D 由下文的the favour I'd been given decades earlier和I pulled over可知,“我”“开(driving)”着车。
16.C 由As I was now a widow, I saw my chance ...
20.B 由上文的he made us sandwiches.

Today's word, pan, takes us back to the days of the gold rush in California.
On January 24th, 1848, a man named James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in California. The news spread quickly. Thousands rushed west. They traveled on foot, on horseback and by boat to reach the gold fields. By 1849, the great gold rush was on. Towns and cities grew overnight. Throughout California — in the mountains, along the streams and rivers — thousands of people searched for gold.
Some found areas of mountain rock thick with gold. These men got rich. But such areas were few and quickly claimed by the first men to find them. Others searched for gold in the rivers coming down the mountains. They were after pieces of gold that the rains had washed down from above .
The only way to find this gold was by panning. First a gold miner put dirt in a metal pan and added water. Then he shook the pan so that the water would wash the dirt. Slowly, he poured the water out of the pan. If he was a lucky miner, pieces of gold would remain.
Across the nation, newspapers carried stories of the gold being found. Each one hoped that the place he claimed panned out well — had some gold.
For many, gold mining did not pan out. For a few, it panned out well. But in time, huge machines were built that could wash many tons of dirt at a time. Panning died out.
The word, however, remained in the language. Today, Americans still say, “ It_panned_out_well,” when something they have done pleases them. A business, a discovery, a simple event pans out well if it is successful. Unhappily, sometimes things do not pan out.
In recent years, the word pan has taken on another meaning. Today, it also means to criticize. How it got this meaning is hard to discover. But the job of a critic is to sometimes pan the work of a writer, artist or singer.
1. Why did so many people flood to California in 1848
A. Because towns and cities there developed quickly.
B. Because the mountains in California were a great place for travel.
C. Because they wanted to get rich by looking for gold.
D. Because the land of California was fertile at that time.
2. The underlined part “It panned out well” in Paragraph 7 has the same meaning as “________”
A. Everything turned out well
B. Nothing could be worse
C. It's not the case
D. It's a pity
3. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To tell us some stories about the gold rush.
B. To introduce the word “pan” in American English.
C. To teach us how to look for gold in rivers.
D. To introduce the history of the gold rush in California

Jimmy started painting when he was three years old, and when he was five, he has already very good at it. He painted many beautiful and interested pictures, and people paid a lot of money for it. They said, “This boy's going to be famous after when he's a little older, and then we're going to sell these pictures a lot more money.” Jimmy's pictures were different with other people's because he never painted on all of the paper. He wrote on half of it, and the other half was always empty. “That's very clever,” everyone said, “Nobody else do that!”
One day somebody bought one of Jimmy's pictures and then said to him, “Please tell me this, Jimmy. How do you paint on the bottom half of your pictures, but not on the top half?” “Because I'm small,” Jimmy said, “and my brushes don't reach that highly.”

One year ago, I was in great trouble. I worked hard at English and devote all my spare time to practise it. But I failed to pass the mid-term examination, which made me great disappointed. So I asked my grandpa for advice when I got to home. Hearing that I told him, he said, “To some extent, examination results are sometime unexpected by your study level. You can't judge your progress by one examination.” He encouraged myself to work hard for long time to check my results. I took my grandpa's advice. Now I realize that the process of learning is much more important and my English is more better than before. From my experience, I feel that we should listen to opinion from old people.

Across the United States, there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one city — but kept both their names.
Winston Salem is one of them. It's a mid sized city in what's called the plateau (high land), between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early last century. It's home to the nation's biggest open air tobacco market.
The giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's headquarters is in Winston Salem, and Winston is the name of one of Reynolds' best known cigarette brands. Fast growing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem,so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place.
From a historical and tourist point of view,Salem,or Old Salem, as it's called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.
Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women's work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation's oldest boarding schools for young women — the Moravians' Salem Academy founded in 1772 — is still in operation.
Over the years,Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a non profit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what's called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th century houses, taverns and Moravian dormitory buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper in Winston Salem.
The historic community is booming again. Just as R.J. Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across the town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue and donations.
1.From the passage we can know that ________.
A. Winston Salem is the name of a city
B. Salem is home to the tobacco market
C. the city Winston Salem has two names
D. Old Salem is the name of a tobacco brand
2.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________.
A. the two cities benefited each other
B. Salem developed faster than Winston
C. R.J. Reynolds Company has moved into Salem
D. the combination meets the wishes of the people
从文章第三段中的“so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place”推断知,人们投票同意将两个地方合并,所以是“满足了人们的愿望”,故选D项。
3.The city Salem is special for its ________.
A. boarding school
B. lifestyle and tradition
C. respect for brainpower
D. religious belief
4.The underlined word “rehabilitate” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. reconstruct B. evaluate
C. enlarge D. decorate

Years ago, like you, I found myself extremely frustrated with my pillow going flat. Most pillows are designed to break down.
Paddling (涉水;划水)out to catch the next wave at a competition in Christchurch, New Zealand, James Tuhikarama had a heart attack, which knocked him off his surfboard (冲浪板).He almost choked to death in the water, lost consciousness, and was soon floating facedown in the ocean.
For a few moments, no one noticed as he drifted away from the main competition area. About that time, Hira Edmonds, 25, a lifeguard and a senior instructor for a surf-safety company, was teaching 14 other lifeguards the finer points of emergency rescue on the second floor of a building overlooking New Brighton beach. Edmonds had watched dozens of surfers ride the waves that day. As he glanced out of the window, he saw someone in a wet suit facedown in the water. “It doesn't take much to realize someone's in trouble,” says Edmonds. “Lifeguards are never really off duty.” Edmonds called the team, grabbed first aid equipment, and rushed down to the water. The lifeguards dragged Tuhikarama, 47 and a father of two, to the beach. More than a dozen rescuers took turns pumping oxygen and pressing his chest to start his breathing again. For nearly an hour—far longer than a single lifeguard would have been able to continue the lifesaving technique—the team continued all these. An ambulance finally arrived and took Tuhikarama to the hospital, where he spent a week unconscious in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while his brain and heart healed.
A month after he recovered, Tuhikarama reunited with six of the teenage lifeguards who saved him. “Being spotted by a group of lifeguards was the only thing that saved me,” he says. “I've been given a second chance.”

You can't always predi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ct a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.
The designer says ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia, “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.21教育网
The Lampbrella ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is a standard looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.www.21-cn-jy.com
In addition to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the desig ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ner, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed (安装) at 2 metres off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no pl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.www-2-1-cnjy-com

Imagine being face to face with a woolly mammoth (猛犸象). It would be quite a sight. Scientists believe it would be 11 feet tall. The woolly mammoth would have a long powerful trunk, and sharp tusks (长牙) that reach up to 10 feet. Its fur would be up to three feet long. It would weigh six tons — about as much as a bus.
You've probably never seen a giant furry elephant before. Actually, you definitely haven't. The species has been extinct for thousands of years.
But a few years from now, you might be able to see a woolly mammoth for yourself. Scientists believe they have the technology to recreate one.
A team of South Korean and Russian scientists plan to clone a woolly mammoth. How will they do it Several woolly mammoth bodies have already been discovered in Siberia, an icy region in Russia. The scientists plan to take cells from these frozen mammoths.
The scientists believe it will take five years. Many scientists and animal lovers can't wait. It will be so exciting, they think, to be able to bring back to life a creature that has been extinct for thousands of years. By observing the way the creature looks and acts, scientists might make brand new discoveries about the history of animal life.
Other experts aren't so sure about the woolly mammoth project. One big question is what to do with a mammoth. Earth has changed in the thousands of years since these animals died out. Would it be able to survive in today's climate
Then there's the cost: Some believe that the money being spent on the experiment could be better spent on other important scientific projects, such as fighting disease.
But the South Korean and Russian scientists are sticking to their plan. They admit they have a big challenge ahead. There is no guarantee that they will succeed, but they're hopeful.

Sure, human dads can play games with their kids and help with homework, but can they give birth Daddy sea horses can! This Father's Day, while you're praising your daddy, you may also remember that some of the best dads in the world can be found in the animal kingdom:
Sea horses: The “Mr. Moms” in the sea, male sea horses, carry up to 2 000 fertilized (已受精的) eggs in small bags in their stomachs until they hatch. Even after the babies are born, they stay inside the bag until they are ready to live by themselves.
Darwin's rheas: Thought your dad was overprotective Darwin's rheas, also known as South American ostriches (鸵鸟), are so protective of their children that they have even been known to attack small airplanes on the ground if they get too close to their home!
Marmosets: These little monkeys do everything but give lectures on how to give birth! Devoted dads assist during their babies' birth. They also let Mom get some rest by taking care of the kids when she's not nursing them.
Sand grouse: These pigeon like birds live in areas where water is rare, so fathers fly as many as 50 miles to get water for their kids. After they dip their breast feathers in the water, they fly home and let their chicks suck the water from their bodies.
Fathers in the animal kingdom are not that different from our own beloved dads. This Father's Day, when you are honoring your dad, honor animal dads, too, by practicing kindness toward all animals.

Switzerland is the best place to be born in the world in 2013, and the US is just 16th. A new study made by the Economist Intelligence Unit(the EIU) says American babies will have a less bright future than those born in Hong Kong, Ireland and even Canada. The EIU, a sister company of the Economist, tried to measure how well countries will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come.
People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life judged in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions, according to the analysis. The Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark also all make the top five in a ‘quality — of — life’ indexs(指数) highlighting where it is best to be born next year.
One of the most important factors is being rich, but other factors come into play — including crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life. In total, the index considers 11 factors. These include fixed factors such as geography, others that change slowly over time such as demography(人口统计学), social and cultural characteristics, and the state of the world economy. Small economies take up the top 10 countries, with Australia coming second and New Zealand and the Netherlands not too far behind.
Half of the top 10 countries are European, but only one, the Netherlands, if from the euro-zone. The crisis-ridden south of Europe, including Greece, Portugal and Spain, falls behind. Interestingly, the largest European economies — Germany, France and Britain — do not do particularly well. Nigeria has the title of being the worst country for a baby to enter the world in 2013.
