Text 10
George was from the United States and had come to London for a holiday. One day he was not feeling well,so he went to a clerk at the desk of his hotel and said,“I want to see a doctor. Can you give me the name of a good one?” The clerk looked in a book and then said,“Dr. Keneth Grey,61010. ” George said,“Thank you very much. Is he expensive?” “Well,” the clerk answered,“he always charges his patients two pounds for the first visit to him, and £1.5 for later visits.”
George decided to save 50p, so when he went to see the doctor, he said, “I've come again, doctor.” For a few seconds the doctor looked at his face carefully without saying anything. Then he nodded and said,“Oh, yes.” He examined him and then he said, “Everything's going as it should do. Just continue with the medicine I gave you last time.”
A
Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I'm not a football commentator (评论员), though — just an English teacher in Japan.
I came to Japan two years ago, and didn't think I would say,but Japan has that effect on you. People_often_end_up_living_here_longer_than_they_planned. I think it's best to teach in a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for the nightlife factor. But I'd say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.
I teach English privately, which means I'm my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it's well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule (日程表) of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.
Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.
The schools are reluctant to take time off — even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.

A. Tokyo B. a small town

22. According to the writer, one had better ________ first to do private teaching better.
A. take a TEFL course
B. decide his or her own lessons
C. find students
D. build up a full schedule
23. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph implies that ________.
A. there are many foreigners in Japan
B. Japan is good for nightlife
C. they can teach English privately in Japan
D. Japan has something more attractive than expected
24. The underlined word “reluctant” in the passage may probably mean ________.
A. kind B. unwilling
C. free D. careless

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12,a white gardenia was delivered to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flower-shop were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender's name and just delighted in the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged these imaginings. She'd ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man across the street whose mail I'd delivered during the winter. As a girl, though, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy I had run into.
One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn't care if I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia — lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery (神秘).
My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.
25. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. A Mother's Love B. A Graduation Party
C. A Special Birthday D. A Childhood Dream

C. she thought education was most important
D. she could take care of things by herself

27. Who was the sender of the flower?
A. One of the writer's neighbors.
B. One of the writer's classmates.
C. The writer's mother.
D. A boy the writer had run into.

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts more intelligent. They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices (触摸屏装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute's exhibition here this week. “These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Inc, which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM's “Shopping Buddy”, has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.
“The whole model is driven by advertisers' need to get in front of shoppers,” said Alexander. “They're not watching 30-second TV ads anymore.”
People can use a home computer to make their shopping lists. Once at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card to start a system that will organize the trip around the store. If you're looking for toothpicks, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.
The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you've finished, the device figures out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self checkout stand and pay.
The new computerized shopping assistants don't come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average store about $16,000 and the Concierge will cost stores about $500 for each device.
28. The underlined word “they” (Paragraph 1) refers to ________.
A. supermarkets B. shop assistants

A. a-b-d-c B. b-a-c-d
C. a-c-b-d D. b-c-a-d

30. We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.
A. intelligent shopping carts cost a large sum of money
B. the Concierge is cheaper than the Buddy devices
C. shop assistants with computer knowledge are well paid
D. average stores prefer the Concierge to the Buddy devices

Modern zoos are very different from zoos built fifty years ago. At that time, zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages with iron bars, which were easy to keep clean. However, for the animals, the cages were small and impossible to hide in. Although the zoo keepers took good care of them, many of the animals did not feel comfortable, and they often became ill.
In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions. The animals are given more freedom in larger places so that they can live more as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. Trees and grass grow in the cages, and water flows through the places that the animals live in. There are few bars; instead, there is often a deep ditch filled with water, which surrounds a space where several sorts of animals live together as they would naturally. In an American zoo,the visitor can walk through a huge special cage that is filled with trees, some small animals and many birds, and the cage is large enough for the birds to live naturally. In a zoo in New York, because of special night, people can observe certain animals that are active only at night, when most zoos are closed. Some zoos have special places for visitors to watch animals that live in the desert, or under water. Some other zoos have special places for animals that live in cold conditions like the bear from the Arctic.
Modern zoos not only show animals for visitors, but also keep and save rare animals. For this reason, fifty years from now,the grandchildren of today's visitors will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.
32. Fifty years ago, animals in zoos often became ill because they ________.
A. were from different countries
B. lived in dirty cages
C. were not taken good care of
D. lived in unnatural conditions
33. According to the passage, in modern zoos ________ feel more comfortable than in old ones.
A. the animals, not the visitors
B. the visitors, not the animals
C. neither the animals nor the visitors
D. the animals and the visitors
34. In some modern zoos visitors can ________.
A. walk through a huge cage to watch closely all kinds of animals
B. walk at daytime and observe those animals active only at night
C. see animals which live in special conditions
D. watch all the rare animals which will not be seen by their grandchildren

This_term_we_have_a_volunteer_project_called“Big_Brothers_and_Sisters”. It's a home for children whose parents have died or whose parents have left home to search for work in large cities. We need volunteers to spend two evenings a week helping them with their homework and then playing and chatting with them — a bit like old brother or sister they can ask for advice and talk things through with. On Saturday afternoon, the volunteers organize some interesting activities for the kids, including some sports and day trips. The students in our school are very interested in becoming a volunteer. So far, hundreds of them have come and signed up. We'll start the project next week.
