Ⅰ.阅读理解
Every day we experience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it. It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noises with our mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other's minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle(奇迹) it is.
Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animals. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing. Birds can fly thousands of miles by observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Nature's talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it's an ability for communicating information to others by varying sounds we make as we breathe out.
Not that we don't have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling(直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.
Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Biologists can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms fun_ction, but this doesn't tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history.
1.According to the passage, the wonder we take for granted is ______.
A.our ability to use language
B.the miracle of technology
C.the amazing power of nature
D.our ability to make noises with mouth
2.What feature of “body language” mentioned in the passage is common to both humans and animals?
A.Lifting heads when sad.
B.Keeping long faces when angry.
C.Bristling hair when ready to attack.
D.Bowing heads when willing to obey.
3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Body language is unique to humans.
B.Animals express emotions just as humans do.
C.Humans have other powers of communication.
D.Humans are not different from animals to some degree.
4.This passage is mainly about ______.
A.the development of body language
B.the special role humans play in nature
C.the power to convey information to others
D.the difference between humans and animals in language use

语 篇 提 能
阅读理解
A
At nine most mornings the same scene is repeated in office buildings around the world. An employee walks into the lift with his boss and apart from a mumbled(咕噜的)“good morning”, the junior is lost for words. That's an opportunity missed, say experts, who believe that such an obviously dull 30?second conversation can be invaluable for those who want to climb the career(职业)ladder. “Small talk can help set up a relationship upon which you can build,” says Dusseldorf communications advisor Torsten Knobble.
As a matter of fact, the importance of small talk goes far beyond the relationship to one's boss. People who fail the art of speaking a lot without actually saying anything find it harder to cultivate relationships in the workplace, believes Ulrich Goldschmidt, director of the senior management association VDF in Essen.
“Small talk is a necessary part of networking,” he says. Actually every conversation begins and ends with small talk, according to Wolf Lasko, who has written a book on the topic and its bearing on career futures.
Not everyone is good at small talk. It takes skills to pick the right moment and the right topic with which to start a conversation. There are plenty of topics although some are not suitable for informal chat. Safe topics include holidays, the movies, music or sports. Besides, body language is part of small talk; it's not a good idea to stand around with arms folded.
Small talk is a question of closeness and distance. For a few employees, it's never a bad idea to hold back at the beginning and familiarize themselves with the company culture first.
1.The main subject discussed in the text is that______.
A.small talk needs skills
B.every conversation begins and ends with small talk

A.He is not familiar with the boss and the company.
B.He doesn't expect that his boss will be with him.
C.He is not good at developing a relationship.
D.He is not interested in holidays, music or sports.
3.The underlined word “cultivate” in the text probably means “______”.
A.develop B.break up
C.familiarize D.bring up
4.We may infer from the text that______.
A.standing around with arms folded is welcome during small talk

In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by “small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, isn't it? ” “Terrible weather, isn't it?” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics, so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great game, isn't it?” At bus stops, people may comment on the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn't it?”
Greetings and small talk are important parts of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.
5.Small talk ______.
A.is a kind of conversation with short words
B.is a greeting when people meet each other
C.is to let people disagree about something
D.is something we talk about to start a conversation
6.The favorite topic of small talk is about ______.
A.the weather B.politics
C.games D.languages
7.The passage suggests that when we learn a language ______.
A.we should learn about the transport system of the country
B.we should only master the grammar and vocabulary
C.we should know the culture about the country
D.we should grasp the importance of the language

语 篇 提 能
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Smile, when making an introduction. Every day we meet people in a number of business and social situations. And the way we meet and greet them creates an impression. It's important to do so in a proper way, no matter whether you are introducing yourself to someone, or introducing two people to each other. To keep you aware of this, we have gathered tips on how to make a proper introduction.
Always stand when making an introduction. When you are seated and someone comes up to greet you, make the effort to stand up. By doing this, you show respect for yourself and for the other person.
Always maintain eye contact while making an introduction.
Many people are not aware of the value of this simple action. When you make eye contact you are giving a confident image.
Always introduce a person of lesser authority to one of greater authority.
The most important thing to remember is to say the most important person's name first.
For example, when introducing your supervisor to a job candidate, you would give your supervisor's name first. “Bob Jones, may I introduce Susan Lee, who has just graduated from ABC University?”
In a situation where rank is unimportant, an introduction is based on sex and age. A man is presented to a woman and a younger woman to an older woman.
What if you find yourself in a situation where you have forgotten the other person's name? Start with a handshake and reintroduce yourself. By doing this, you will usually cause the other person to do the same.
However, if the other person does not take your suggestion, it is OK simply to apologize and let the person know that you cannot remember her or his name. This is not the ideal situation, of course, but it does happen to all of us. The other person should be forgiving.
1. The article gives you advice on______.
A. how to make a self introduction
B. how to make a proper introduction
C. how to leave a good impression on people
D. how to greet people in social situations
2. According to the passage, people will think you are______ if you don't make eye contact with them.
A. not honest B. not confident
C. shy D. unfriendly
3. What should you do when you introduce a new worker to your boss?
A. You should not give your boss' name.
B. You should give the new worker's name first.
C. You needn't give your boss' name.
D. You should give your boss' name first.
4. If you forget the other person's name, you'd better______.

范文:
Dear Jane,
Glad to hear from you and you're welcome to China in July. The following are some Chinese customs.
Firstly, we greet by saying “Hello” or asking such questions as “Where are you going?” or “Are you busy?” to express our care. Secondly, when praised, we reply with “Oh, no!” or “I'm over praised.” to show good manners. Next, when receiving a gift, we usually say “It is unnecessary.” besides “Thanks” to show politeness and then put it away. Finally, at dinner parties, we talk loudly and drink to someone's health or success to show that we're warm.
Anyhow, different cultures, different customs. If you “Do as the Romans do when in Rome”, you'll enjoy more of your stay here.
I hope what's mentioned above might be helpful and wish you a good journey.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

We would leave our friends, our church and our whole lives. Frank would be unemployed until he found a job there. We had to sell our house and find a new one! What had we got ourselves into?
Then I fell asleep. In my dream,a name flashed before my eyes like a colourful light sign: Mary Clauser. I woke up suddenly. Mary and her husband, Lee,were our friends, who lived in an apartment in a neighbouring town. They visited us once years before. Still, I couldn't ignore what I'd seen.
I called her. “Hi,Mary! I want to let you know that we're moving to Florida,” I said. Mary asked, “Does that mean you're selling your house?” “Yes.” “Great! Can I stop by tonight?” she asked. “Of course,” I said.
Mary arrived that night and I showed her around. “Our home was originally built for a wounded soldier,” I told her. “It has wide doors and even a heated garage.” “I remember.” Mary said. Then she explained that Lee had become ill. He could no longer climb the stairs to their apartment and they needed a new place to live as soon as possible. Mary said, “I never told you that Lee grew up in this neighbourhood. His parents live less than a mile away,so they'd be able to help him when I am not in.”
We had our buyer. And I had peace of mind.

In many cultures white is often associated with something positive. A white-collar job, for instance, is the kind of job many people look for, working with your brain but not with your hands.
White has a clean and pure image. That is why doctors, dentists and nurses usually wear white uniforms. Babies are dressed in white at baptisms(洗礼) and brides wear white wedding gowns at weddings. White in these cases is the symbol of innocence or purity. Sometimes white is used in expressions that are not good. “Whitewash” is one such expression. At first, “whitewash” meant painting over something with white paint to make it look better. However, it means something different today: hiding or covering up mistakes or failures.
A “white elephant” is another example of white used in a negative way. In ancient Thailand, a white elephant was regarded as a sacred animal, but it was very expensive to keep. The kings of those days presented a white elephant to the people they wanted to ruin. Once they received this holy, royal animal as a gift, they were not allowed to sell or kill it. Today, a “white elephant” means something that is big, useless and unwanted. In America, when people want to get rid of their furniture or clothes, they often have a “white elephant sale”.

A.the meanings of white in English culture
B.the history of some English idioms
C.some interesting customs in English culture
D.some useful English words and expressions
5.Which expression has a historical background?

I arrived at my mother's home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.
“Oh?” Mom said, “That's Mama's quilt.”
I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together: irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.
“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made.
“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the centre of the quilt, she had stitched(缝)a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
“Oh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.
8.Why did the author go to her mother's home?

Today many people want adventure when they go on holiday; they want a challenge and excitement. But there are other more important elements (元素;因素) they look for in their holiday. The main one is that they want to have a sense of achievement from their holiday. That is why growing numbers of today's holidaymakers are turning to eco?tourism.
Travelers who choose eco?tourism can contribute to the environment rather than destroy it; and there are more and more projects to choose from. In Antigua (安提瓜), guests help the endangered loggerhead turtles (海龟) by covering up their tracks against predators (天敌). In Boston, USA visitors work with the Museum of Science to create a Science Park. In Egypt, eco?tourists join in a “Green Program” for planting trees, bushes and flowers.
The most selfless eco?tourism projects can be found in England. One organization offers tourists eco?work from 9: 00 a. m. to 5 : 00 p.m. and warns them that, although the work is very rewarding, it can also be demanding! Holidaymakers choose from many different types of holiday: archaeological construction (repairing and rebuilding stone walls), outdoor conservation work and so on. Those who are lucky enough to find a place on holiday are involved in productive projects, such as clearing paths, preserving plants. Sometimes the work is heavy, like cutting down weeds and rebuilding stone walls. It's rewarding, though! One visitor was challenged to provide a stream crossing, to connect pathways on both sides. After several days' hard effort and determination from her and the rest of the group, there was a footbridge in place which they were able to cross. At the end of a week's holiday, they all stood on the bridge to have their photo taken above the stream. It was a great achievement, a break from the usual 95 routine, and a_big_“plus” for the environment.
12. According to the writer, what do people want during their adventure?
A. enjoyment B. relaxation
C. protection D. achievement
13. From the third paragraph we can learn that______.
A.people can be offered a job on their eco?tour
B. people who are offered eco?work are paid by the hour
C. people feel it rewarding to join in eco?tourism projects
D. people can find interesting eco?tourism project only in England
14. The underlined phrase “a big ‘plus’” means______.
A. a great contribution B. great progress
C. one great step D. a pleasant thing
15. The following projects belong to eco?tourism EXCEPT______.
A. to build a little wood bridge which is convenient for tourists
B. to help rebuild the damaged walls
C. to make some signs telling tourists how to protect animals and environment
D. to take a stone or a rare plant away as a reminder

Good student-teacher relationships result from the choices that are made even before school, and how those choices are carried out on a daily basis. Here are a few tips to make this process easier for both parties.
__16__
For the teacher, this means that they need to look at each student from the perspective(角度) of what that student could learn, rather than what that student learned last week or last year. For the student, this means that they need to enter the classroom every day with the willingness to trust the teacher to help them understand. __17__ Every school day there are new opportunities to learn new information or to understand subjects that might have been difficult in the past.
__18__
This is not to say that you have to “buy” the affections(关爱) of the student or the teacher, but you can give the gift of a smile, the gift of attention in class,or the gift of eye contact. Giving this type of gift always helps to build strong relationships.
Demand the best.
__19__ We can trust friends to keep us responsible and when developing good student-teacher relationships, the same principle of trust applies. Setting high expectations always pushes us to be our best, and when both the student and the teacher are pushing the other for more depth, more wisdom(智慧), more insight(洞察力), etc, then both the student and the teacher will give more.
To develop a good student-teacher relationship, both the student and the teacher must be willing to decide to do these things daily. Each day, they must be willing to try again and work on the relationship. __20__
A.Buy gifts for teachers.
B.Focus on the positive.
C.Give gifts to one another.
D.We can always learn a lot from our teachers.
E.Future learning is never limited by past experiences.
F. Good relationships are always founded on honesty and high expectations.
G.The most important thing is to trust the relationship to benefit each of the members.

More and more middle school students here are starting using the Internet, through which they can get a great deal of the latest information. They can enjoy lessons given by the best teachers of net?schools at home. And it is easy and convenient to keep in touch with friends by sending and receiving e-mails.
