Research suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal fans were gentle and at ease with themselves.
The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University,is said to be the largest such study ever done.
Professor North described the research as significant and surprising. He said, “We have always suspected a link between musical taste and personality. This is the first time that we've been able to look at it in real detail. No one has ever done this on this scale(规模) before.”
Professor North said the research could have many uses in marketing, adding, “If you know a person's music preference you can tell what kind of person he/she is. There are obvious implications(暗指) for the music industry who are worried about decreasing CD sales.” One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but not outgoing. The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things.
More than 36,000 people from all over the world were asked to rate 104 musical styles and also questioned about aspects of their personality. Professor North, who is the head of the university's department of applied psychology, is still looking for people to fill in a short online questionnaire.

Americans have contributed to many art forms, but jazz,a type of music,is one that was not started in the United States. Blacks, who sang and played the music of their homeland, created jazz.
Jazz is a mixture of the music of Africa, the work songs the slaves sang and religious music. Improvisation(即席创作) is an important part of jazz. This means that the musicians make the music up as they go along, or create the music on the spot. This is why a jazz song might sound a little different each time it is played.
Jazz bands formed in the late 1800s. They played in bars and clubs in many towns and cities of the south, especially in New Orleans. New Orleans is an international seaport, and people from all over the world came to New Orleans to hear jazz.
Jazz became more and more popular. By the 1920s, jazz was popular all over the United States. By the 1940s,you could hear jazz not only in clubs and bars, but in concert halls as well. Today, people from all over the world play jazz. Jazz musicians from the United States, Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe meet and share their music at festivals on every continent. Good evening. Tonight's broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical(古典的) Western music, Indian music, pop and a Negro spiritual. In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music.

The muses were goddesses(女神) of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. In the spiritual and the pop song you will hear voices. The words are part of the musical composition. In the other pieces you will hear only the piano or the sitar. I will comment (评论) after each record is played. Grammy nominated(格莱美奖提名) artist and globally admired DJ and producer Paul van Dyk continues to lead the electronic music charts and appears at the high point of every Top DJ list across the globe. PvD, as his fans have nicknamed him, is currently ranked the World's No. 1 DJ by DJ Magazine's “Top 100 DJs poll” for the second successive year.
PvD is well-known as one of the hardest working artists, with sold-out tours that cross each continent, headline spots at every major festival, and a hugely successful recording career. With over 3 million albums sold worldwide, van Dyk travels around the world over 16 times each year to sold-out performances internationally.
Born in Eisenhuettenstadt, East Germany, Paul van Dyk grew up in East Berlin. Because his community did not have a true club culture, Paul van Dyk listened to the radio where he discovered his passion for music that extended beyond Techno music — he wanted to create a different, more unique sound. In the early 1990s Paul van Dyk was performing regularly at various clubs in Berlin before releasing his first album 45 RPM in 1994. But it was the release of his second album Seven Ways that put him into Top 100, followed by the release of his hit single For An Angel, which began to earn him praise across the globe. By the time Paul van Dyk released Out There & Back in 2000, it became clear that the Berlin-based musician had far more to offer than his signature club sets that had already defined him as one of the most influential DJs and producers of all time. His first mix CD Politics of Dancing was released in 2001, followed by Global in 2003 — a DVD which illustrates his own experiences travelling around the world.

Few kids today are taught the value of sympathy(同情心). It seems so hard for people to have sympathy for others and to understand what they are going through.
As a child I was taught to try to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone every day. I admit that it isn't very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of thankfulness in that person's eyes you just want to do as much as you can.
I had an experience with a guy people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started playing with him and introducing him to people. By just doing that I was making him so happy. And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.
After a while I realized that he wasn't the kind of person everybody thought he was. And to this day we are still really good friends. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he never changed. What had changed was the hearts of others around him.
From this experience I've learned to be kind to other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone can say a kind word to someone else at least once a day. I can promise you that it will be the best feeling you ever get, knowing that one word can make someone's day a bit brighter.

Music which is original is individual and personal. That is to say,it can be identified as belonging to a particular composer. It has particular qualities, or a style, which are not copied from another. If you can recognize the style of a composer, you will probably be able to tell that a certain composition belongs to him or her even though you have never heard it before. A basket-maker has the skill of weaving and interweaving his materials to create colorful patterns, and an expert carpenter(木匠)has the skill of joining together different shapes and sizes of wood to make a beautiful piece of furniture. These skills may be referred to as “workmanship”(技艺). Similarly,in music a composer organizes his melodies(旋律) and rhythms and combines sounds to create harmony. A composer may be capable of thinking up very good, original tunes, yet if tunes are poorly organized, that is, if the workmanship is poor, the final result will not be to standard.
Good music expresses feelings in a way that is suitable to those feelings. There may be joy, sorrow, fear, love, anger, or whatever. Bad music, on the other hand, may confuse unrelated feelings, it may not express any important feeling at all, or it may exaggerate some feelings and make them vulgar, that is, cheap and ugly.
Good music will stand the test of time. It will not go out of fashion but will continue to be enjoyed and respected long after it is first introduced. It will gain a kind of permanent status while bad music will disappear and be forgotten quickly. In pop music, where the general rule seems to be “the newer the better”, the test of time is the hardest test of all to pass.
5.A piece of original music ______.
A.has a personal style
B.sounds very familiar to our ears
C.is one whose style you cannot recognize
D.can not be recognized as belonging to any composer
6.We can see good workmanship in ______.

There are many differences between America and China. The biggest difference is traffic rules. In America there are too much more cars than in China. But there are much fewer traffic jams and accidents in America than in China. We hardly see traffic police in the street, but all cars obey strictly traffic rules, and people hardly find that a car does not obey traffic rules in the street.
About American traffic rules, there are many better terms, such as:
1. Stop line: There are stop lines in all crossing without traffic light (some have two stop lines and others have four stop lines). All cars must stop while meeting the stop line.
2. Traffic light: There is traffic light in the crossing of the road. Cars may almost turn every direction. The traffic light can give signal step by step including u-turn. There is a kind of middle lane of turning left. When a car wants to turn left in the road, he may enter into the middle lane of turning left and give a signal of turning left. When he thinks being safe, he may turn left. In many conditions the order of passing is also given very specifically. If people want to change lane or turn, they must look behind and think being safe. Only so, they may do it.
3. Specific item: Such as parking, there are three kinds of lines (their colours are white, blue or red) in the roadside. Every line may park different kinds of cars. There are many streets in some residential areas(住宅区) ,and there is a kind of rule that any car cannot park at any time or any period time. In every parking, there are some special positions for invalid(伤残的) people.
4. About the priority of passenger and car: At any case, passengers have the priority to cars. And only after passengers have passed the road and got the top of sidestep, cars may go ahead.
In general, traffic rules of America are very specific, convenient, safe and humanizing.
8.Which of the following is NOT the reason why we can hardly see traffic police in the street in America?
A.Traffic police are not very necessary because few cars break traffic rules.
B.The traffic is very clear and there are few traffic jams and accidents in the street.
C.There are so many cars in the street that the traffic police can't be seen.
D.The effective traffic rules play an important part in the road safety.
9.Why is there a middle lane of turning left on the road?
A.It is designed for the cars that want to turn left.
B.It is very safe to drive there.
C.It is very convenient for the traffic police to find the cars that break the rules.
D.The cars that want to turn left can easily give a signal of turning left.
10.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.In America, all cars in the crossing must stop when they meet the stop line.
B.In America, any car cannot park in the streets in some residential areas.
C.If people want to turn, they can obey the guide of the traffic police.

Dear_Wang_Tao,
I'm glad to know that you're going to enter college and it's my great pleasure to give you some suggestions.
As far as I'm concerned, the ideal major which is suitable for you is music. On the one hand, with the educational reform, there will be a continuing need for music teachers in China. On the other hand, you have a strong interest in music, which is essential to the making of a music teacher.
If you agree with me and want to realize your dream, you should study hard and make friends with people who also study music from different countries. Furthermore, you should try your best to have a good master of the theory of music, which can help you succeed in the entrance exams.
Yours_ever,
