Carter hurried off the bus and rushed (冲) into his room excitedly.
“Surprise!” Jackson said.
“What are you doing in my room I thought you were sick!” Carter asked.
“I feel better! Look what I did!” Jackson pointed at the desk in the corner.

What makes organised (有组织的) sports fun for kids A team at George Washington University (GWU), led by Amanda J. Visek, has done some studies on it. Visek says that lots of kids give up playing organised sports around age 13 or 14 because they think the sports aren't fun any more. She thinks if she can find out what makes organised sports fun, she can help more kids play longer and develop lifelong exercise habits.
First, Visek and her team listed 81 things [called “fun determinants (决定因素)”] that make organised sports fun by working with over 200 players, coaches and parents. Then they asked some players (ages 8 to 18) to rate (评定) how important each determinant was to their enjoyment of playing organised sports.
The ranking (排名) of the 81 fun determinants was surprising. You may think winning is the most important determinant. But it was only ranked 40th. Lots of players spend their weekends travelling to tournaments (锦标赛). But they ranked “playing in tournaments” and “travelling to new places to play” 58th and 71st.
What did the players think made organised sports fun They ranked “trying your best”, “exercising and being active”, and “getting along with your teammates” in the top 10 most important fun determinants.
More recently, Visek's team compared the ranking results of boys and girls. They also compared younger players' with older players'.
Some people think girls like sports because they want to be with their friends while boys like to compete (竞争). Visek's team's studies, however, showed boys' and girls' rankings were very close. The same was true for younger and older players.

Wen Xionghui is a calligraphy (书法) teacher who works at Dongyuan Senior High School in Heyuan, Guangdong Province. Every Friday afternoon, he travels to rural (农村的) areas in Heyuan to teach students calligraphy.
Wen started working as a volunteer calligraphy teacher in rural schools in 2014. For eight years, he has taught in several schools. “It takes me at least 1.5 hours to reach the nearest school by bus, and over 3 hours to get to the farthest school,” Wen says. The journey is harder if there's bad weather, but Wen has never missed a class. “I'm glad when I see students make progress. I feel tired but happy,” he also says.
Most of Wen's students are left-behind children. Wen says that although rural children start to learn calligraphy later than children in cities, this doesn't mean that they aren't excellent students. In fact, he always finds students with a talent (天赋) for art in rural schools, and some have become quite skilled because they keep practising.
Wen not only teaches students calligraphy in rural areas, but also spreads (传播) a love of traditional art and culture. “Teaching art is really meaningful in rural areas because there aren't enough art teachers there,” Wen says.
Li Zhihong, an expert (专家) in calligraphy, thinks that Wen has set a good example for his students. “He has taught them that learning calligraphy needs perseverance (毅力), just as what he has worked hard with for years,” Li says.

Last Friday, our class had a football game with Class Two. 20 minutes after the game started, Class Two scored a goal. We didn't score at the end of the first half. Although we were one goal behind Class Two, we didn't give up. Instead, we tried our best. In the second half of the game, we started to play better. Fifteen minutes before the game was over, we scored a goal and five minutes before the end, we scored another one. In the end, we beat Class Two.
It was an exciting game. The players in both classes played very well. More importantly, I learned from the game that persistence plays an important part in success.
