Father's Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother's Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time.
The origins of the celebration are American and it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days. His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realised when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mother's Day. She thought there should also be a Father's Day celebration. And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora' s father's death. Britain took the idea of Father's Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s.
Father's Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother's Day is, probably because it hasn't been in existencefor so long. But what do British people do for Father's Day? Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is.Some people do buy presents as well. Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can always use even if they don' t want them. In the run-up to Father's Day, or indeed Mother's Day, there will be adverts on the TV giving us ideas of CDs or gadgets we can buy. Card shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar merchandise with “World'sGreatest Dad” written on them. Some families might do things together to celebrate Father's Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest—make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the grass to make him feel really appreciated.

The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals.
During the opening ceremonies, after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs. On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.
The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish Line in front of the cheering people.
Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles. Some even ride upside down — their legs and feet straight up in the air — all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher—Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn't play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.
Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother's perfume(香水).
Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.”After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.
Mrs. Thomspon paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy's mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.
Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M.D.(医学博士).
The story doesn't end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

This Friday is Tomb-sweeping Day, one of the three traditional festivals that are included as the Chinese mainland's public holidays starting this year. Together with the Dragon Boat Festival in June and Mid-Autumn Festival in September, the authorities say observing these days is aimed at protecting folk culture and customs.
Chinese nationwide should thank Chen Jing, a 68-year-old folk artist and professor from Nanjing University for the move. “It is certainly a favorable gesture for the promotion and preservation of folk culture and customs,” Chen said. In 2006, Chen proposed to the authorities to make Tomb-Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, a public holiday. His suggestion received wide support from other folk artists. “Tomb-Sweeping Day means a lot to the Chinese,” Chen said. It is a day for people to honour their ancestors.
Two years ago, on his trip to honour his ancestor in Taizhou, Jiangsu province, he found the train full of people, most of whom were the elderly. From the conversation with them, he found the elderly thought it necessary to include young family members in the festival's activities, while working people also wanted the chance to honor their ancestors. Among those he spoke to was an elderly man from Hongkong, who told Chen Tomb-Sweeping Day is a holiday in Hongkong for paying tribute to ancestors. Chen was inspired by the experience and insight from these people and put forward the suggestion for the holiday during an interview by mainstream media.
“If we do not take immediate action, our traditional folk customs will be forgotten by the younger generation,” he said. His idea soon spread all over the country and was echoed(回音) by many scholars and experts.

The First Day in the Summer Holiday
It was the first day of the summer holiday, but Dingding wasn't happy. In the morning, his mother woke him up early and wanted to take him to a make-up school. At almost the same time, his father came in, telling him to sign up for an English training course. Dingding was a football fan and was crazy for cartoon films, yet neither of his parents would like him to develop his own interest. What they only care about seems to be his study.
It's not only Dingding who has to face such a holiday. Nowadays, children in China are burdened with so much homework and so many training courses that they can hardly enjoy their holidays. It's time that parents “returned” holidays to their children.

I have recently completed my college degree. The last project was called“Smile”. The class was asked to go out to smile at three people and document their reactions (反应). I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a_piece_of_cake.
My husband, the youngest son and I went out to McDonald. We were standing in line when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away. As I turned around I smelled a horrible body odour (气味) and saw two poor homeless men standing behind me. As I looked at the short blue-eyed gentleman closest to me, he was “ smiling ”. The second man fumbled (摸索) with his hands as he stood behind his friend.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss, ” because that was all they could afford.
Then I really felt it—I embraced (拥抱)the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me,judging my every action. I smiled and asked two more breakfast meals on and gave them to the men.
The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said,“Thank you.”
I turned in my project. My teacher said, “Can I share this?”I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need to heal people and to be healed.
In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's and every soul that heard the story in the classroom. But, I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn.

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a great bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However, bridge building experts thought that this was an impossible project and told Roebling to forget it. But Roebling could not ignore the vision of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an engineer, that the bridge could be built.
The father and son developed concepts of how it could be completed and how the difficulties could be overcome. After that, they began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway (在进行中) a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which made him unable to walk or talk or even move.
Everyone had a negative comment since the Roeblings were the only one who knew how to build the bridge. In spite of these difficulties, Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving it, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. The project was underway again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife's arm, until the bridge was finally completed.
Today the Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory to the victory of one man's determination not to be defeated by circumstances. This is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical disability and achieves an impossible goal.

People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong foods, get the wrong types of calories (卡路里) per meal, and they also eat meals at the wrong time each day. Food is more powerful than any weight loss pill (药片), because the food that you eat can either make you thin or fat. This is true because your body is like an engine, and it only needs certain foods at certain intervals (间隔) each day.
Low-calorie Diets Do Not Work
The reason people cannot lose weight by starving themselves is that their metabolism (新陈代谢) will detect any major drop in calories and it will then adjust (调整) itself by burning fewer calories each day. That is the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight, while your friends can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight.
Low-fat Diets Do Not Work
Many people in today's society are buying mostly low-fat or non-fat food at the grocery store. Everybody knows how much fat is inside the food they buy. However, people are getting fatter than ever before by doing this. They are not losing weight by changing to this low-fat lifestyle.
Losing weight has nothing to do with these things. One of the most important things you can do to control your weight is to eat the proper foods, such as fruit and vegetables, eat them at the right time, and exercise every day. If people make this a habit, they will lose weight.
29.What is the main reason why people are overweight?
A.They eat the wrong foods at the wrong time.
B.They eat food with lots of calories.
C.They don't take any weight loss pills.
D.They burn many calories every day.
People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong foods...
30.The article is written in order to ________.
A.tell readers not to buy low-fat or non-fat food
B.tell readers how to lose weight
C.tell readers about an important scientific discovery
D.call on people to lose weight and stay healthy
31.To realize the aim of your weight loss plan, you should ________.
a.do exercise every day
b.eat meals at the right time
c.eat fruits and vegetables
d.eat low-fat or sweet food
e.eat the proper foods at each meal
A.a,b,c,d B.a,b,d,e
C.a,c,d,e D.a,b,c,e
Low-fat Diets Do Not Work可排除A、B、C三项;从全文可知,D项正确。

Why Exercise Is Cool?
1. Exercise Strengthens Muscles
Did you ever do a push-up or swing across the monkey bars at the playground? __36__ By using your muscles to do powerful things, you can make them stronger. For older teens and adults, this kind of workout can make muscles bigger, too.
2. __37__
Can you touch your toes easily without yelling ouch? Most kids are pretty flexible, which means that they can bend and stretch their bodies without much trouble. Being flexible is having “full range of motion,” which means you can move your arms and legs freely without feeling tightness or pain.
3. Exercise Keeps the Balance
__38__ Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day just to fun_ction, breathe, walk around, and do all the basic stuff.__39__ If you're not very active, your body won't need as many calories.
Whatever your calorie need is, if you eat enough to meet that need, your body weight will stay about the same. If you eat more calories than your body needs, it may be stored as extra fat.
4. Exercise Makes You Feel Good
It feels good to have a strong, flexible body that can do all the activities you enjoy-like running, jumping, and playing with your friends. It's also fun to be good at something, like scoring a basket, hitting a home run, or perfecting a dive.
But you may not know that exercising can actually put you in a better mood. __40__ It's just another reason why exercise is cool!
A. So you want to do some aerobic (有氧的) exercise right now?
B. Food gives your body fuel in the form of calories, which are a kind of energy.
C. When you exercise, your brain releases a chemical, which may make you feel happier.
D. Those are exercises that can build strength.
E. Exercise Makes You Flexible.
F. Exercise Makes Your Heart Happy.
G. But if you're active, your body needs an extra measure of calories or energy.

66.______ 67.______ 68.______ 69.______ 70.______
根据后面的“The leftover food usually goes to the dustbin.”
64.so that 考查状语从句。
短语be impressed by/with...
根据后面的“many people in my generation don't eat trotters”可知,此处表示Jim赞同Ming Yue的看法,所以用exactly,意为“正是如此”。

Dear editor,
Now, more and more students are getting fond of western fast food, and thus they take in too much sugar and fat. I don't think it good for their health.
There are all kinds of foods in the world. Which one is healthier, the Chinese food or the western fast food?
Different people have different choices.
In my opinion, the Chinese food is healthier. Firstly, the Chinese food contains a lot of fruit and green vegetables. It is rich in fiber and low in sugar and fat. Secondly, the Chinese food is very delicious and has many dishes. It is nice to taste. I think it is the healthiest in the world. So many Chinese people can keep fit and have white teeth.
Yours sincerely,

A
Some people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them .Take my family's last vacation .It was my six-year-old son's winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day .I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.
The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged-okay, ordered-them to wait it out at the airport to “earn” more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?
Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.
I've made a living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks. I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.
I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money's worth. I'm also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.

What do literary greats Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Burns have in common? They both lived and wrote in Edinburgh, along with many other big names in the field of literature. This fact helped UNESCO(联合国教科文组织)award the city the title of world's first City of Literature on October 14.
Edinburgh left a lasting impression on Arthur Conan Doyle(1859—1930). Although he was born there he went to school in England but returned home for medical school. After graduating he moved to London and began writing his Sherlock Holmes stories. His inspiration for the character came from one of his professors at university. Holmes' methods were so clever that they actually furthered the advance of the study of criminology(犯罪学).
Robert Burns(1759—1796)is still regarded as Scotland's national poet, more than 200 years after his death. He is celebrated all over the world through translations of his work and the annual Burns Night supper on his birthday. One of his songs, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose ranks among the finest love songs ever written and Auld Lang Syne(《友谊地久天长》)is sung all around the world.
As one of the first literate societies in Europe, the Scottish Parliament passed the world's first compulsory(义务的)education law in 1496. By the 1790s, almost all Scots could read. Visitors to Scotland often observed that even the lowest members of society had copies of Burns' poems and other books.

Mark, a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You've got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn't got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering “what if”. I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow_land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

One of the best-known American writers of children's books is Alfred Strong, or Doctor Strong, as he is better known to readers everywhere. Now, an art show called “Doctor Strong From Then to Now” is travelling around the United States. The pictures and drawings show the history of Doctor Strong.
Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children's book was published. Since then, he has written forty-five books that have sold more than one hundred million copies around the world.
Doctor Strong's books are known for their easy use of words and colorful, hand-drawn pictures. These drawings bring life to his imaginary creatures. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and hundreds of others.
The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show. It included about three hundred Doctor Strong's original drawings and some of his writings.
Most of Doctor Strong's books, although written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in Mc Elligot's Pool, he describes the danger of pollution. He discusses the arms race in The Butter Battle Book, written in nineteen eighty-four.

M: Of course. I think the easiest way to do it is to make a simple list of what it means to be respectful at school.
W: Can you tell me some details?
M: Yes. First start by making a quick list of how you can show respect at school.
W:En.
M: List poems seem to work best when they are written with a parallel structure.
W: Parallel structure?
M: That is, when each line begins the same way and follows the same pattern.
W: I wonder if you can give me an example?
M: OK. I show respect for the bus driver by... I show respect for my teacher by...
W: I see.

M:Well, it's quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about three hundred pounds.
W:Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds.
M:Well, that should be enough. Would you like to be by the sea or by a lake?
W: Well, I'd prefer a lake in the mountains.
M:Okay. The Aqua Center in north Italy will be best for you. That costs £370.

M:Why is it so important to protect cultural relics? Well, one reason is that cultural relics can help us understand how people lived in the past. However, it isn't easy to know what life was like. When we try to learn about the past, we can only see the thins that survived time and the weather. The things we can do from the past can tell us something about everyday life in ancient times.
In some cases, more relics are saved than usual. In Egypt, for example, important people were buried in large tombs where they put lots of everyday objects. Because the tombs were locked and hidden, the things inside were well kept over thousands of years. Thanks to this, we know that the ancient Egyptians lived in houses made of bricks, that ancient Egyptian women wore made-up, and that most people slept on wooden beds. The objects can give us an idea of how people lived and how they probably thought.
Protecting our cultural relics is an important task and we should take it seriously. We are protecting our history and knowledge so that people in the future will know and enjoy it. We are also helping ourselves and our children to better understand who we are and where we come from. This is why we in China are trying so hard to protect our cultural relics.
A
In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of a comet(彗星). When the fragments(碎片)landed in the southern part of the grand planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?
The year is 2094. It had been announced that a comet is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the earth. The news has caused panic.
On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the spend of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and million of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.
Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the earth, but the north won't escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosion. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.
Could it really happen? It has already happened more than once in the history of the earth. The dinosaur were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn't survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?
21.Which of the following is NOT true according to the author's description of the disaster in 2094?
A.The whole world becomes extremely cold.
B.All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed.
C.The whole mankind becomes extinct.
D.The visit of the comet results in wars.
文中“No more than 10 million people have survived”一句意为“只有一千万人幸存下来”,而C项说全人类都灭绝了。
22.Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?
A.Because they could only live in the warm climate.
B.Because they once dominated the earth.
C.Because their extinction indicates future disasters.
D.Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age.
23.In writing the passage, the author intends to________.
A.give an accurate description of the possible disaster in the future
B.prove that humans will sooner or later be destroyed
C.tell the historical development of the earth
D.warn of a possible disaster in the future
24.It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of a(n)________.
A.horror story
B.news report
C.research paper
D.article of popular science
Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35, 880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit. So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.
25.Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage?
A.Sending information for weather forecast.
B.Taking photographs of the Earth.
C.Sending TV pictures.
D.Providing food for airplane pilots.
26.What's the speed the earth rotates at?
A.35,880 kilometers per hour.
B.335,880 kilometers per hour.
C.11,000 kilometers per hour.
D.110,000 kilometers per hour.
This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates.
27.What does the underlined word “This” in the 3rd paragraph refer to?
A.A satellite.
B.A little rocket.
C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.
D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.
28.Which is true of satellites?
A.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.
B.Every time a satellite gets broken, it is brought back to the Earth to be repaired.
C.A broken satellite is never left in space.
D.They often crash into each other.
C
Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks,a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didn't have any other luggage. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.
“Give this package to Jean Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily,” Tony said,“You don't have any luggage, right?”
“Only this backpack,” Brian answered,“You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”
“That's right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”
“Thanks.”
Is Brian a criminal? Not at all. He is an air-courier. And he paid only $ 110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air-couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an aircourier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier,but it is quick.
Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as aircouriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isn't for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible about your travel plans, and don't mind wearing the same clothes for a week,it can be a great way to take a vacation!
29.Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel?
A.Because they were the uniforms for air-couriers.
B.Because that made him easier to be recognized.
C.Because he would be charged for taking much luggage with him.
D.Because he was required not to have much luggage with him.
由第三段“Only this backpack,” Brian answered, “You said I could bring one carry-on bad.”
30.Who was Tony?
A.He might be an air-courier company clerk.
B.He might be a guard at the airport.
C.He might be Brian's friend.
D.He might be a customs official.
根据第一段中“Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.托尼给了他(Brian)一张往返的机票及一个小包裹”,以及结合下文可知,Tony可能是一位航空快递公司的业务员。
31.Businesses choose the air-courier service because ________.
A.it costs less B.it is flexible
C.it grows fast D.it saves time
从倒数第二段最后一句“It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier,but it is quick.用航空快递投递包裹不便宜但是它迅速。”可知选D。
32.Air-courier travel is a good choice for those who ______.
A.have much money
B.hate wearing the same clothes
C.have much personal luggage
D.are flexible about their travel plans
D
The journey to the moon has been the first step towards future exploration in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Traveling to the planets will be man's next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.
Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed(确认)nor ruled out, Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus(金星)is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense(稠)and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth's atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on earth, but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.
33.According to the passage, traveling to the planets will be________.
A.much easier and even more interesting
B.far more exciting and dangerous
C.man's final aim
D.man's first step
34.From the passage, we can guess________.
A.there is life on Mars
B.there is no life on Mars
C.The atmosphere of Mars is not so dense as that of Venus
D.scientists will have little hope to find the answers
35.Scientists think we should take care of our earth because________.
A.no other planets are to take the place of the earth
B.everything needed is provided by the earth
C.the only home of man will be the earth for a long time
D.the dream to find another home for man will come true

Welcome to Banff, Canada's first, most famous and arguably most fascinating national park. If you've come to ski or snowboard, we'll see you on the slopes. Skiing is a local favourite too.
While you're here, try other recreational activities available in our mountains. Popular choices include a Banff Gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain, bathe in the natural mineral waters at the Upper Hot Spring, horse-drawn sleigh ride, drive-your-own-team dog sled excursion, and snowmobile tour to the highland(but not in the national park).
We also recommend you make time to enjoy simple pleasures. After looking around Banff Ave shops, walk a couple of blocks west or south to the scenic Bow River.
True ice skating on frozen Lake Louise where Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition Works are displayed after Jan 25. You can rent skates in Banff or at the sport shop in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel.
Banff's backcountry paths access a wilderness world of silence and matchless beauty—cross country skis and snowshoes provide the means. Banff sport shops rent equipment and clothes, or join an organized tour. Although we've been many times, we still find the cliffs and icefalls of our frozen canyons worth visiting.
Wildlife watching also creates satisfying memories. We have seen hundreds of the elk and bighorn sheep that attract visitors, yet they still arouse a sense of wonder. And the rare spotting of a cougar, wolf or woodland caribou takes our breath away.
See if simple pleasure work for you. Fight in the snow with your kids, walk beside a stream or climb to a high place and admire the view.

People travel for a lot of reasons. Some tourists go to see battlefields or religious shrines Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.
Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year is in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean (地中海) has always attracted them. Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resort and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun!
The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italy's 30,000 hotels are booked every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks and roadsides. Spain's long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else. 37 million tourists visit yearly, or one tourist for every person living in Spain.
But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism, it's getting worse. The French can't figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St. Tropez. And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.
None of this, however, is spoiling anyone's fun. The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists. Obviously, they don't go there for clean water and solitude (独居). They bear traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don't even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines,it's still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London,or Oslo.
32.The writer seems to imply that Europeans travel mostly for the reason that ________.
A.they want to see historic remains or religious spots
B.they are interested in different cultural traditions and social customs
C.they would like to take pictures in front of famous sites
D.they wish to escape from the cold, dark and rainy days back at home
But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.
33.In paragraph 2, cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam are mentioned ________.
A.to show that they are not good cities in terms of geography and climate
B.to tell us how wealthy their people are
C.to suggest that these cities lack places of historic interest and scenic beauty
D.to prove that they have got more tourism than they handle
People of cities like London, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year is in the rain.
34.According to the passage, which of the following countries attracts more tourists than the others?
A.Italy. B.Spain.
C.Greece. D.France.
Spain's long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else.
35.The latter half of the last sentence in Paragraph 3, “or one tourist for every person living in Spain”means ________.
A.all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists
B.every year almost as many tourists visit Spain as there are people living in that country
C.every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,
I'm writing to tell you that I had a safe journey back to Beijing. Thanks to your kindness, I had a wonderful time in Australia. It was my first time to go abroad and I was naturally a bit nervous when I first arrived. When I saw you at the airport, however, I knew from your warm smile of welcome that everything would be all right. With Jenny's help, I visited so many places of interest in Australia, which left me quite a good memory. I hope someday you will come to visit Beijing and I can return your kindness.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming
