Text 10
Who knows what the world will be like in the future? But one thing is certain: if we are still in the world, we will be people of the last century! Let's imagine another possible world.
Human civilization will reach a higher level than it has ever achieved before. Cars will be replaced by private planes. The television set will no longer be the most important member of the family, but will be treated like the fridge or the washing machine. Actually people will prefer to attach themselves to computers. People will work to live but not live to work. People will no longer confuse the quality of things with the quality of life. People will concern more about the lives of teenagers. Rich children will not be treated like kings, because there will be no rich children. Education will not only be the right of those who can pay for it. Teachers will lose their jobs because computers and robots will do the teaching instead.

People do not analyze every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a __36__ problem. They often accept the opinion or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without __37__; they try to find a solution by trial and error. __38__, when all of these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six __39__ in analyzing a problem.
__40__ the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam's bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must __41__ that there is a problem with his bicycle.
Next the person must __42__ the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must know why it does not work. For example, he must __43__ the parts that are wrong.
Now the person must look for __44__ that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For example, suppose Sam __45__ that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the brakes. __46__, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about brakes, __47__ his friends at the bike shop, or look at his brakes carefully.
After __48__ the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an example __49__, his suggestions might be: tighten or loosen the brakes; buy new brakes and change the old ones.
In the end, one suggestion seems to be the solution __50__ the problem. Sometimes the final idea comes quite __51__ because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a __52__ way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees there is a piece of chewing gum (口香糖) stuck to a brake. He __53__ hits on the solution to his problem: he must __54__ the brake.
Finally the solution is __55__. Sam does it and finds his bicycle works perfectly. In short he has solved the problem.

A
Doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I found out this when I was in the eighth grade. At the time we were having a final test. During the test, the girl who was sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn't understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me for an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after we turned in the test papers and were prepared to go home, the teacher asked me to stay in the room. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl's test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn't talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

A. persuade others not to do a favor to somebody in the future
B. tell the readers an amusing story about himself

60.It can be inferred from the text that the author's attitude to his teacher is a kind of________.
A. anger B. complaint
C. understanding D. hate
B
Children are keen Internet shoppers with more than half having bought something online, research has shown.
Around 53 percent of children aged between 7 and 16 said they had bought something over the Internet, 10 percent more than in 2004, according to Halifax.
Boys were more likely to be Internet shoppers than girls, with 60 percent of boys saying they had bought items online, compared with just 46 percent of girls.
Unsurprisingly, older children were more likely to use the Internet to shop than younger ones, with nearly three-quarters of 12-to-16-year-olds shopping online, compared to just 29 percent of 7-to-11-year-olds who said they had bought something.
More than half of children preferred buying things over the Internet to buying them on the high street, while 61 percent of those who had bought things online said it was easier to buy certain items over the Internet than in shops.
However, boys were more likely to always prefer buying things online, while girls where more likely to still like the actual high street shopping experience.
The most common items for young people to buy over the Internet were CDs, tapes and computer games and equipment. Some children had bought DVDs and videos, while some had bought gifts.
Children spent most money on computer games and equipment, with 13 percent saying they spent more than $20 online on these items a year, followed by 12 percent who spent more than $20 a year on mobile phones and 11 percent who spent the same amounts on clothes.
Cheryl Millington, head of savings at Halifax, said, “We are not only seeing the emergence of a generation of young consumers, but also keen cyber-consumers. While children often lead the way in Internet use within the family home, parents have an important role to play in ensuring they stay safe while online.”
61. From the passage, which of the following is NOT correct?
A. Children are keen on internet shopping.
B. Boys are more likely to buy things over the Internet than girls.
C. Older children want to buy things in actual street.
D. Children like to buy some fashionable items over the Internet.
62. We can infer from the last paragraph that________.
A. Cheryl Millington is against children's online shopping
B. parents should play an active role in ensuring their children's safety
C. Cheryl Millington holds a conservative (保守的) view about children's online shopping
D. children will become the main composition of online shopping
63. Which of the following can best show the organization of the text?
a.the number of children's online shopping
b.items bought over the Internet
c.money spent on online shopping
d.safety problems

Oscar nominations (提名) don't come out until Jan. 23, and the awards aren't until Feb. 25. Here are several movies that look like best-picture competitors.
Little Children
Director: Todd Field
Little Children keeps much of the power and humor of Tom Perrotta's wonderful novel. The novel was darkly funny, and the film tries to mirror that quality. The main characters are adults who often act like children. Brad (Patrick Wilson) would rather play football than study for the bar exam he has repeatedly failed.
Flags of Our Fathers
Director: Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood just keeps getting better. He seemed best in 2003 when he made Mystic River and then Million Dollar Baby in the following year. Who would have thought he could best himself with a great film about World War II? The story built around the battle of Iwo Jima between the US and Japan. The battle scenes are graphically depicted.
The Queen
Director: Stephen Frears
British prime minister Tony Blair's failure with the royal family in the excellent drama The Queen, will mirror moviegoers' reactions as real-life events unfold among imagined story following the death of Princess Diana. The Queen is the kind of challenging and well-written film that filmgoers long for but rarely get. The changing way of British life is examined.
Stranger Than Fiction
Director: Marc Forster
Stranger Than Fiction is a praise to the power of literature. But art is not its only field. It also looks into the world of final certainties: death and taxes. The story facing the coming death offers a window into the soul of an Everyman, as well as into the nature of creative inspiration. An English professor, wonderfully played by Dustin Hoffman, becomes a key player.
64. Which of the following movies are directed by Clint Eastwood?
A. Stranger Than Fiction & The Queen.
B. The Queen & Flags of Our Fathers.
C. Mystic River & Million Dollar Baby.
D. Flags of Our Fathers & Little Children.
65. The movie The Queen should belong to ________.
A. war movies
B. historical movies
C. action movies
D. love movies
66. Which of the following may the text come from?
A. Entertainment.
B. News report.
C. Science research.
D. Local education.
D
It is a known fact that we are creatures of habit. The more comfortable we become with the habit the harder it is to break, good or bad. Well not completely true, the worst the habit, the harder to break. The good things in our life seem to be the hardest things to stay true to. So what motivates us? The desire to obtain what we do not have. Sometimes it is the things that are just outside our reach, but we think they are impossible to reach. Sometimes it is the things that are staring us in the face, but we can not see them. The fact is that we fail to obtain what we truly desire. Instead of driving the BMW that you desire you drive the Nissan.
We work our lives away, become slaves to the clock. Well, we do have that Nissan and we do live in a nice house, but is that our true desire? Just recently I had the opportunity to watch someone build the house of their dreams. And let me tell you that this is a_house_of_houses. The house lacks nothing, from solid mahogany (红木) doors to a breathtaking stone waterfall flowing into a pool, and lets not forget the putting green. The person that built that home has worked very hard for a very long time and deserves that home, but why am I or you for that matter any different than that person? I have worked very hard in my life and deserve what I desire so what is stopping me? At this point nothing but myself. Since we are creatures of habit it's all about changing the way we think and learning to obtain what we truly desire and not settling for what we think we are worth. I could continue to be a slave to the clock, pay my bills each month and hope I have enough money for the vacation that is so needed or I could take control of my life and start the plans for my dream home.
67. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To advise us to break bad habits and form good ones.
B. To encourage us to obtain what we truly desire in life.
C. To analyze the reason why we become slaves to the clock.
D. To advise on what cars or houses we should buy.
68. The author's tone in mentioning the person who'd spent a lot of effort in building his house is that of________.
A. scolding B. doubting
C. disapproving D. praising
69. The author would probably agree that________.
A. being content with one's life is a fine quality
B. it is most important to seize every opportunity that knocks at your door
C. it is necessary to hope for the best and prepare for the worse
D. we should become masters of our own life
70. The underlined part “a house of houses” in the passage really means________.
A. a very common house
B. a house with many rooms
C. the best of all houses
D. an eco-friendly house
E
After her teenage daughter slipped into a coma(昏迷), Thelma Pickard never lost hope of recovery.
Daughter Amy, now 23, has begun to show signs of life after being given an over-the-counter sleeping pill.
Last night Mrs. Pickard said the “old sparkle” returned to her daughter's eyes when she was given a pill and described the change as “amazing”.
Until last month she remained seemingly lifeless in bed in a nursing home.
But now, barely four weeks after taking her first Zolpidem pill as part of a worldwide trial, she is breathing by herself, instead of through a hole in her throat, reacting to food and showing signs of awareness.
Amy was 17 when she collapsed and suffered severe brain damage after experimenting with heroin. Shortly afterwards, former nurse Mrs. Pickard, a mother of two from Hastings, East Sussex, allowed an image of the teenager in her hospital bed to be released as a poignant (辛酸的) plea to persuade others not to use drugs.
Her decision to allow her daughter to be part of the drugs trial is the subject of a BBC1 documentary, to be shown tonight. Amy is one of 360 people taking part in the trial.
The remarkable side-effects of Zolpidem were first noticed in South Africa after 24-year-old Louis Viljoen suffered serious brain damage when he was hit by a truck in 1994.
Doctors expected him to die and told his mother he would never regain consciousness. He was prescribed Zolpidem normally used as a quick fix for insomnia (不眠症) — five years later in an attempt to reduce involuntary spasms (痉挛) in his arm.
Doctors thought the drug would send him into a deep sleep and stop him moving around so much — but just 25 minutes after being given the first pill, he sat up and said: “Hello, mummy.”
71. Why was Army given sleeping pills?
A. To ease her pain.
B. For a worldwide trial.
C. To treat her severely damaged brain.
D. To bring her back to life.
从文章第七段“Her decision to allow her daughter to be part of the drugs trial is the subject of a BBC1 documentary, to be shown tonight.”
72. Mrs. Pickard allowed her daughter's image to be released to________.
A. warn others of the danger of taking drugs
B. remind herself not to lose hope of her daughter
C. arouse the doctors' sympathy
D. encourage her daughter never to give up
73. What do we know about the trial from the passage?
A. It is working.
B. It brings about unexpected result.
C. It proves to be effective for the 360 people.
D. It causes some side-effects in the patients.
74. Which of the following best describes the doctor's feeling in Louis Viljoen's case?
A. Puzzled. B. Frightened.
C. Ashamed. D. Surprised.
75. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. A Determined Mother's Efforts Paid off
B. Sleeping Pill Helped My Girl Wake up from a 6-year Coma
C. Amazing Trial Brings Hope to Patients
D. Sleeping Pill Cured a Girl of Drug Addiction
Some people believe that greed and selfishness have become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?

答案
Over the past few years, China has imported a large number of foreign movies. However, they have neither brought us much entertainment, nor helped our national movie industry to develop. With so many foreign movies flowing into China, our national movie industry is faced with a difficult situation.
This is a serious problem in our society. In recent years, such movies that may lead to crimes appeared in the market. They do harm to the youth who are the hope and future of our country. Please don't earn money at such big cost.
In my opinion, the policy of importing so many foreign movies should be changed. We ought to be more selective in importing foreign movies.
