Task 3 Giving advice
Task description
In pairs, pupils choose one of the role cards and take turns to act a student and a helper on the Student Helpline.

Task steps
Read the rubrics and examples carefully with the class. Practise the language needed for the task and demonstrate the steps by using the pictures at each step of the task.
Part A
Pupils get into pairs. They take turns to role-play a student and a helper on the Student Helpline.
The student chooses a role card from the Copymaster. He/She tells the helper what has happened and how he/she feels.
The helper gives advice to the student.
Part B
Individually pupils choose one role card. They write a letter on the task sheet to a person in that situation. They try to cheer the person up and give advice on how to cope with the situation.
More able pupils could write a letter in their own words or reply with a note of thanks to the letter.
Get into pairs. Take turns to role-play a student and a helper on the Student Helpline. The student chooses a role card and tells the helper what had happened. The helper gives advice to the student.
