The Jones-Baldwin family wasn’t always so big. When Keia Jones married her husband Richardo Baldwin in 2010,she had just one child: a 2-year-old daughter,Zariyah from a previous relationship.Little did they know, though, that their family would eventually add not one,not two,but three more children to the Jones-Baldwin family, thanks to the gift of adoption.
First came 11-year-old Karleigh,in 2014.She and Zariyah became close friends at school, but due to some financial difficulties,Keia says Karleigh’s mother fell on hard times and was unable to properly care for her.In 2017,the couple adopted a lovely 3-year-old kid named Ayden. That same year, their fourth child came into their lives unexpectedly.
“Unlike our three other black kids, the baby, named Princeton,is white,” Keia recalls.Princeton was born seriously ill and stayed in hospital several weeks after his birth.“They needed someone to do kangaroo care with him,” says Keia,“and chose me for the task, and I was more than willing to take on the job.”
The experience of being black parents raising a white son has certainly caused them some trouble. There are always lots of suspicious stares and unfavorable comments wherever they go.Someone even called the police and said the baby was stolen by the couple.Once the family were enjoying themselves on the beach in Florida when the police were called in.It was not until Keia showed the police their ID cards that they were convinced that the baby was indeed their adopted son.
When asked why they would make so much effort to adopt the kids,Keia smiled.“It’s all love,” she said.“Both my husband and I love kids.We just can’t stand seeing kids suffering.Thank goodness, the lovely kids, who are from different cultures and of different ages, are all growing up healthily and happily under the same roof.Over the years, they have brought us so much joy! It’s time to put down the phone and look away from Instagram(一款照片分享应用程序):Researchers found that people who look at pictures of food are less likely to enjoy the next meal they eat.
Ryan Elder and Jeff Larson of Brigham Young University asked 232 people to look at photos of food and rate them. The researchers divided the participants(参加者) into two groups—one group looked at 60 photos of desserts, while the other examined 60 photos of salty foods.Participants ranked each photo based on how attractive the food looked.Afterward both groups enjoyed a snack of salted peanuts. The group that looked at pictures of salty foods liked the peanuts less than the group who looked at desserts, even though no one saw photos of peanuts.
“If you want to enjoy your meal, avoid looking at too many pictures of food,” Larson said.“Even I felt a little sick to my stomach during the study after looking at all the sweet pictures we had.”
The researchers believe that food doesn’t taste as good after viewing all those photos because looking at many photos makes people feel as if they have already experienced the sensation(感觉) of eating.Whatever someone eats after looking at photos doesn’t seem as good as what she saw.
“In a way, you’re becoming tired of that taste without even eating the food,” said Elder.“It’s sensory boredom—you’ve kind of moved on.You don’t want that taste experience anymore.”
But there is some good news:People need to look at a lot of food photos to experience sensory boredom. So if you want to enjoy your next brunch, play it safe and stay away from your foodie friend’s photo albums.
28.What did the researchers do in the experiment
A.They showed peanut pictures to participants.
B.They chose 232 participants who enjoy eating.
C.They reminded participants to avoid sweet food.
D.They asked participants to eat some salted peanuts.
29.What happened to the participants in the salty group
A.They were afraid of rating food pictures.
B.They found salted peanuts less enjoyable.
C.They enjoyed their meals a lot more.
D.They compared their food with others’.
30.Which of the following shows “sensory boredom”?
A.You lose your sense of taste when you feel extremely tired.
B.You are bored with your meal after taking pictures of food.
C.You find food less delicious after seeing many food pictures.
D.You eat more than before when the food tastes delicious.
31.What is the best title for the passage
A.How We Can Stay away from Instagram
B.What Causes People to Enjoy Salty Foods
C.Why Instagram Is Reducing Your Appetite
D.Which Food Tastes Less Delicious

Imagine being able to see perfectly in the dark. This dream has become a reality thanks to a newly developed technology. This technology consists of a thin film that will be placed on the lenses(镜片) of common glasses. The film is cheap to make, easy to produce, and is lightweight. It is actually 100 times thinner than a hair.Yet,despite its tiny size, its performance is impressive;this special film allows you to see in the dark.
This technology is able to transform infrared light(红外光),normally invisible to the human eye,and turn this into images people can pared to animals, humans have very impoverished night vision.Over the years, night vision devices(设备) have been developed to help the medical, industrial, and scientific worlds.Scientists are able to study night-time animals by using infrared cameras, while companies use infrared imaging for food quality control.
Traditional infrared devices work by discovering the heat of an object. They use a cooler in low temperature and can be easily influenced by the heat noise.Such shortcoming led the team into exploring an improved device.
Their new device is able to function at room temperature. The new technology is unlike the traditional devices.Once this new night vision is used to all,it could save lives.Drivers will be able to see better at night, especially when driving on unlighted roads.Police can use them when searching at night, and hikers who lose their way can feel more confident walking in the dark.
The inventors are excited to make the practical uses.“While this is the first experiment,we are actively working to further advance the technology.Of course, the many uses are exciting and seeing in the dark opens up a new world for all,” said Mohsen Rahmani, lead developer of the technology.
32.What do we know about the film according to the first paragraph
A.It costs a lot to make.
B.It is difficult to produce.
C.It looks like regular glasses.
D.It helps us see in the dark.
33.What does the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Clear. B.Poor.
C.Amazing. D.Effective.
34.What does paragraph 4 focus on about the new technology
A.Its likely buyers.
B.Its future improvements.
C.Its practical applications.
D.Its working conditions.
35.What can be inferred about the technology in Mohsen’s words
A.It needs to be further developed.
B.It is not exciting enough to scientists.
C.It has become a hit in the experiment.
D.It has been available to common people.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With the rapid development of science and technology,we don’t know how different our life will be in the future. 36
At first we think about human relationships. In the year 2050,we will use computers almost every day.We will be making new friends through the Internet—even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. 37 On the other hand, our relationship with people won’t be as important as they are today—we will feel a little lonely.
Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050.For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.
38 Traveling to other planets or to the moon will also be available for everyone.Means of transport will,of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.
We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. 39 And,scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS.Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.
Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world,we often think about them.We worry about our and our children’s future;we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather confident about our future. 40
A.We can only imagine it.
B.It will be much faster and easier for us.
C.Our environment will be more polluted.
D.However,we are convinced of the following.
E.Spending holidays will also be completely different.
F.We should be happy and believe good things will happen.
G.We will pay more attention to protecting the environment.

“I just couldn’t stop thinking about her.” That’s what a nine-year-old cat lover Sutter Rowse said after he saw a story about a stray cat(流浪猫) in his community of Williams Lake,British Columbia, which was in need of surgery(外科手术).He decided to do something about it and raise funds to help the cat. Now,that cat is much better and has a brand new owner, all thanks to Sutter’s hard work and clever thinking.
Online,Sutter came across a story posted by his local animal shelter. The BC SPCA explained that the cat—which was named Hazel by shelter staff—had been found at the transfer station in Anahim Lake, about four hours west of Sutter’s home.A transfer station is a place where garbage and other waste are sorted.Shelter staff said Hazel was looking for food there.
They later discovered that the back part of it was injured. The head of her femur(股骨) was broken and died—meaning the death of cells in some part of the body—had set in,so Hazel would need surgery to get better.SPCA staff put out a call to the community to raise funds for it,and that’s when Sutter got to work.Sutter thought up a good idea: making use of the power of cinnamon buns(肉桂面包).He knew if there was anything that could get community members to empty their pockets,it would be this sweet treat: cinnamon buns.
He and his mum,Leslie Rowse, got to work baking, and his mum posted about Sutter’s efforts on a social media page for his local community.Around 15 dozen (or 180) cinnamon buns later,Sutter had raised $850.His mum dropped off the money at the shelter, and Hazel was able to start her surgeries.
Following Hazel’s surgeries and several days of recovery,Sutter’s mum was ready to share some good news.Sutter’s mum told Sutter that Hazel had a new owner. She asked him to guess who that owner was.“I guessed us! And I was right,” said Sutter.

We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. 39 And,scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS.Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in a better condition.

They decided to pick up Hazel on weekend. That was a dream which came true for Sutter, who had been asking for a cat since he was really little. On Saturday morning,Sutter got up very early, earlier than he does in weekdays. The family had breakfast quickly and they drove to the local animal shelter. When Sutter saw Hazel, the cat was a little shy and looked weak.Sutter touched the head of Hazel softly and it looked as if Hazel had accepted the new kind owner completely.
Since adopting Hazel,Sutter has made a lot to improve her condition. He prepared many kinds of nutritious foods for Hazel carefully. What’s more,he helped Hazel walk little by little and accompanied the cat as much as possible. After weeks of careful care, the cat recovered much from her injuries. The BC SPCA thanked Sutter for the “sweet” fundraiser idea and helping Hazel recover.“We hope she will regain full jumping and running abilities within the next months,” said Sutter’s mum.
