(2023·河北张家口高一期末)
Read Across America(RAA) is a day held annually on March 2nd that encourages children in every community to read and also encourages parents and teachers to celebrate the joy of reading. It’s a holiday that has been celebrated since 1998 and falls on the same day as children’s book author Dr Seuss’ birthday.
This holiday dates back to May of 1997.This is when a small group of people at the National Education Association(NEA) came up with the idea to create a day of the year that celebrates reading among children. They reasoned that since many school football programs could get children engaged in the sport through pep rallies(鼓舞士气的集会),then why couldn’t the same thing be done for reading So they decided to turn to a Read Across America program that was officially launched on March 2,1998,and ever since it has continued to grow in size.Today, more than 50 national non-profit and association sponsors(资助者) and more than 3.3 million NEA members support the effort every year.
This holiday is celebrated in numerous ways. All over the country, libraries, schools and community centers hold special Read Across America events that promote reading in their communities.Teachers also develop special events on this day to encourage their students to read. The NEA also sponsors reading round tables and has an online store that allows people to buy everything they need for their RAA celebrations. This includes Dr Seuss hats,RAA bookmarks, special RAA flash drives and even RAA mugs.
While recommended student reading lists vary from community to community, there are some books that always seem to pop up.Below is a partial(部分的) list of some of the books read by elementary, middle school and high school students.

A 16-year-old boy wanted to throw a party for his birthday. He didn’t ask for favors from his friends or themed decorations.Instead,he held the celebration on Roblox. On the digital platform, which allows users to play and create a multitude of games, the boy threw himself a party to which he invited not just friends from school and Twitter, but also fans of the game.
For netizens, the idea of the “metaverse”—a sort of 3D sequel(续篇) to today’s 2D Internet,in which users work, play, buy and sell inside immersive(沉浸式) virtual worlds—has become the Latest Next Big Thing. This is just the beginning, however.
A fully-developed metaverse will completely change several key sectors such as business, education, and science. In China, for instance,Alibaba has built a VR shopping mall that specializes in helping both vendors and buyers to essentially “shop” inside an online virtual store.
How a metaverse can be used in education Teachers will be able to hold online classes in a virtual classroom, where students can discuss with each other using their avatars(化身).Students will also no longer need to leave the house to visit museums around the world;they could simply walk into one in the metaverse instead. Finally, scientists will be able to explore and conduct experiments in a virtual lab, which is something that has never been done before.
If the metaverse is necessarily an extension(扩大) of the Internet we now have, one only has to think about the countless problems that we have yet to solve in our online existence—hacking, catfishing, harassment(骚扰),hate speech—to see how truly dangerous a future on the metaverse could be.
For now, though, everything is in the early stages. The evolution of the metaverse—if it happens at all—will be fought among tech giants for the next decade,or maybe even longer.

A few days ago,our school held a two-day food festival. Before the food festival started, the school had set up tents and posted menus at the gate of the canteen to attract students. 1
On the first day of the food festival, when the bell rang after the last class in the morning, everyone rushed to the booths(摊位) in front of the canteen. 2 There was a long line in front of each booth.Everyone sweated in the burning sun,but the heat didn’t stop the students’ enthusiasm for delicious food.Fortunately,I bought a cup of milk tea that I had been longing for in just a few minutes. It tasted even better than I had imagined!
3 Without any experience,I chose to try as much food as I could, which gave me so much joy and satisfaction. For example,I fell in love with the crispy durian pastry(榴莲酥) at first bite. 4 And I can still remember how exquisite the craftsmanship(技艺) of making Indian pancakes was. However, what impressed me most was in fact the “intangible cultural heritage on the tip of the tongue”.
It was everyone’s common effort that made the activity such a big success, and it is people’s love for food that made the festival special.Enjoy food, value food, have a heart of gratitude and never forget the ones who have brought you up. 5
