In a close-up (特写), one man is pulling the other with all his strength through the window of an SUV, a type of vehicle, which is stuck dangerously on a cliff (悬崖) 30 feet above a busy roadway.
Jason Warnock, then 29, is the man performing the life-saving action. He was driving in Lewiston, Idaho, in April 2015 when he came upon a fallen tree in the middle of the road. “I was like, ‘What happened’ ” he told a news website. Warnock stretched out his neck to stare up the side of a cliff. At the very top, where the tree should have been, was an SUV swinging on the edge, held back from falling to the road by a delicate, heavily damaged chain-link fence. Looking inside the car, Warnock could see a panicked Matthew Sitko, 23, beating on the passenger-side window.
That’s when Warnock sprang into action. He crossed a nearby footbridge, and climbed up the cliff to get to the vehicle. When Warnock got to the car, he tried breaking the window with a tool he had on him, only to realize that his cracking was shaking the car and might cause it to slip down the hill. He stopped and turned to calming Sitko enough to get him to open the window. “Give me your hand,” Warnock said. “If this thing goes, I want to have a hold of you so I can at least get you out of there.” Before reaching for the lifeline, Sitko had one request: “Can I grab my phone ” Soon enough, Warnock had freed both man and his machine.
According to the Lewiston police chief, the accident was caused when Sitko, who suffered only minor injuries, lost control of his car. For his part, Warnock insisted he came to Sitko’s aid for one simple reason: “I just did what anyone would do.”
4. Where was Matthew Sitko’s SUV when spotted
A. On a cliff. B. By a river.
C. On the road. D. Under a tree.

A. Calm but stubborn. B. Daring but anxious.
C. Caring and decisive. D. Optimistic and strong.

Along with a rising number of space missions by government agencies and private industries, comes a fresh set of problems for Earth: potentially dangerous space junk.
A recent study published in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy concluded “that current practices have a 10 percent chance of one or more deaths over a decade”. In other words, according to researchers from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, there’s roughly a one-in-ten chance that the next decade will witness falling space junk kill someone.
The space junk orbiting the earth is an unfortunate by-product of our desire to explore and document space. According to 2021 figures from NASA and the Department of Defense’s Space Surveillance Data, the agencies were actively tracking more than 27,000 pieces of space junk, most of which are larger than a softball and that casually orbit the planet. While the floating space junk is certainly a problem, not all the objects that went up must come down, and, in fact, a number of pieces simply burn up in the atmosphere. But sometimes those objects, particularly large ones like used rocket attachments, give in to gravity and fall back down to Earth to be dealt with once again by their human makers. Typically, people don’t die or even get injured by this phenomenon — many of the falling pieces crash into the ocean.
They also have to deal with the unsettling feeling of knowing that large rocket pieces can just fall from the sky and that it might affect people in certain parts of the world more than others.
This poses an obvious safety risk to people on the ground. “When some large parts of space junk return to Earth, the parts of their mass survive the heat of atmosphere. Many of the surviving pieces are potentially dangerous, giving serious risks on land, at sea, and to people in airplanes,” the study explains.
8. What is the conclusion of the study published in Nature Astronomy
A. People will see space junk easily in the future.
B. Government agencies and private industries will develop fast.
C. Some people may be hit to death by objects from the space.
D. There will be a 10 percent chance for human to die in 10 years.
9. What can be inferred from the third paragraph
A. Normally we should not worry about space junk.
B. The large space junk will pollute the ocean.
C. The floating space junk will come down finally.
D. The space junk will get burnt in the sky.
10. What might be discussed in the following part of the text
A. How to find space junk.
B. How to deal with space junk.
C. How to inform people of the danger.
D How to avoid the danger of space junk.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Space Junk Causes Pollution

C. Exploring Space Takes in Unfortunate Results
D. Space Junk Puts People at Risk

“Innovation,” Matt Ridley tells us at the start of his new book, How Innovation Works, “is the most important factor about the modern world, but one of the least well understood.” After decades of careful study, we’re still not completely sure about innovation’s causes or how it can best be developed. In this book, he is trying to make the “great puzzle” easier to understand.
In the first half of his book, we visit with the early developers of the steam engine, knowing the events leading to the Wright brothers’ first flight, and hear about the stories about inventors and their inventions. In the second half of his book, he looks closely, chapter by chapter, at the factors that shape innovations.
Ridley’s most important chapters are where he calls attention to the process of making new things. Innovation, he tells us, is usually a step-by-step journey. This was the case with Thomas Edison, who, as Ridley notes, tried 6, 000 different materials for his electric light.
At Ridley’s conclusion, he tells us the innovation “is the child of freedom and the parent of good life”. But it is unclear why the human desire to move forward is now in the crisis of being abandoned. It seems more realistic to believe that seeking innovation will be just fine, as long as we keep encouraging men and women who are trying to solve important problems. And we don’t necessarily have to create an idea to explain what may be happening. For example, our scientists and engineers are now working around the clock and around the world to fight off the COVID-19. They are solving a big problem with lots of funding, lots of talent, lots of teamwork and lots of ambition. Isn’t that how innovation works, too
12. Matt Ridley’s new book is intended to__________.
A. encourage people to innovate B. share stories about innovation
C. introduce the history of innovation D. explore the way innovation works
13. What is the first half of Matt Ridley’s new book mainly about
A. The factors that shape innovations.
B. How the inventors achieved success.
C. Introduction to some innovations in history.
D. How people benefited from innovations in the past.
14. Which of the following may belong to “innovation”
A. Workers apply traditional skills to ensure the profits.
B. Farmers improve their harvest by expanding farming land.
C. Scientists make efforts to create new ways to reduce pollution.
D. Teachers improve students’ academic performance with more homework.
15. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. We can predict the future by innovating.
B. We will face crisis if we never innovate.
C. Innovation is to solve all important problems.
D. Innovation is the combination of many factors.

Christmas was drawing near, and came along with it our favorite moment — the Treasure Hunt.
In the past, my brother Brandon and I had opened all of the packages under the tree. All that was left was an envelope. We knew that envelopes usually contained cards, and if we were lucky, they also contained gift cards or cash.
However, this Christmas my dad looked almost like he’d forgotten about the envelope as he casually handed it to me. I opened it and discovered inside a 3x5 index card (索引卡) with a border of shining surrounding a poem. Of course, I don’t remember the poem by heart, but its rhyming message instructed us to go downstairs. We were excited. Maybe we were getting a pet we had wanted.
What we found downstairs was another envelope, containing another index card with a border of shining surrounding a poem. This poem told us to go to Dad’s car. Was the pet already in the car, ready to go
No! There was just another envelope containing another shining index card. This one told us to go to Mom’s office downtown. Neither of us was old enough to drive. This meant we had to beg our parents to hurry up and get dressed and finish drinking their coffee and get going.
Eventually, we made it to Mom’s office where we found — you guessed it — a poem telling us to go somewhere else. This time it was to the TV station where Dad worked. By now, our curiosity was stretched to the limits of our imaginations.
We soon found out, however, that such a desk at the studio is a lovely place to keep a 3x5 index card with a poem, which confused us more than any other. It told us to go to an unfamiliar address.
The car stopped in front of the unknown house. It felt like the end of the hunt.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My dad handed us the final envelope, and the final poem told us to knock on the door.

5. Why did Warnock stop breaking the window

D. He realized the possible consequence.
6. What is the cause of the accident
A. The SUV was beyond repair. B. The SUV was out of control.
C. Sitko was severely injured. D. Sitko was sleepy and tired.
7. Which of the following can best describe Warnock

D. How to avoid the danger of space junk.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Space Junk Causes Pollution
B. How to Take Back Space Junk
C. Exploring Space Takes in Unfortunate Results
D. Space Junk Puts People at Risk
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第二段中“In other words, according to researchers from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, there’s roughly a one-in-ten chance that the next decade will witness falling space junk kill someone. (换句话说,根据维多利亚大学和英属哥伦比亚大学的研究人员的研究,在未来十年里,大约有十分之一的机会看到太空垃圾坠落致死。)”可知,有些人可能会被来自太空的物体砸死。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“While the floating space junk is certainly a problem, not all the objects that went up must come down, and, in fact, a number of pieces simply burn up in the atmosphere. (虽然漂浮的太空垃圾确实是个问题,但并非所有上升的物体都必须下降,事实上,一些碎片只是在大气中燃烧。)”以及“Typically, people don’t die or even get injured by this phenomenon — many of the falling pieces crash into the ocean. (通常情况下,人们不会死于这种现象,甚至不会受伤——许多坠落的碎片会坠入海洋。)”可知,虽然太空漂浮垃圾是个问题,但是很多碎片在大气中燃烧了,或者在通常情况,即使有许多太空垃圾碎片坠落,但都坠入了海洋。故选A。
根据最后一段中““When some large parts of space junk return to Earth, the parts of their mass survive the heat of atmosphere.
D 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据第一段的“After decades of careful study, we’re still not completely sure about innovation’s causes or how it can best be developed. In this book, he is trying to make the “great puzzle” easier to understand.(经过几十年的仔细研究,我们仍然不完全确定创新的原因,也不确定如何才能最好地发展创新。在这本书中,他试图让这个“大难题”更容易理解。)”及最后一段的“Isn’t that how innovation works, too (这不也是创新的运作方式吗?)”
根据第二段的“In the first half of his book, we visit with the early developers of the steam engine, knowing the events leading to the Wright brothers’ first flight, and hear about the stories about inventors and their inventions.(在他的书的前半部分,我们参观了蒸汽机的早期开发者,了解了导致莱特兄弟第一次飞行的事件,并听到了关于发明家和他们的发明的故事。)”
根据最后一段的“It seems more realistic to believe that seeking innovation will be just fine, as long as we keep encouraging men and women who are trying to solve important problems. And we don’t necessarily have to create an idea to explain what may be happening.(更现实的说法是,只要我们继续鼓励那些试图解决重要问题的男性和女性,寻求创新就可以了。我们不需要创造一个想法来解释可能发生的事情。)”可知,为了解决重要问题所做的努力可以被称为创新,因此C选项“Scientists make efforts to create new ways to reduce pollution.(科学家们努力创造减少污染的新方法。)”
根据最后一段的“For example, our scientists and engineers are now working around the clock and around the world to fight off the COVID-19. They are solving a big problem with lots of funding, lots of talent, lots of teamwork and lots of ambition.(例如,我们的科学家和工程师正在世界各地夜以继日地抗击新冠肺炎。他们正在用大量的资金、大量的人才、大量的团队合作和雄心来解决一个大问题。)”可知,创新是多种因素的结合。故选D。

Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. ____16____. Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.
____17____. For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.
A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on the fresh air, sunshine and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing used during the exercise. ____18____. Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise.
Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem. ____19____.
Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. ____20____. Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.
A. A green gym uses as little equipment as possible

G. Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light
F 17. C 18. E 19. B 20. G
根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym.(绿色运动是一个术语,用于描述在自然环境中进行的任何类型的体育锻炼,而不是在健身俱乐部或健身房中。)” 因此,空格处应继续说明绿色运动与健身房运动的不同之处,F项“It usually doesn't use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym (它通常不使用健身房里常见的健身器材)”符合文意,提到了“gym”,与上下文一致。故选F。
根据后文“For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.(例如,一些人认为,真正自然的运动体验要求人只穿天然纤维制成的衣服。其他人则认为赤脚跑步或在大型竞技场上行走,比穿着鞋子跑步或行走更可取。)”从两个方面举例说明了两种不同的绿色运动方式。因此空格处总结性说明不同的人,对于什么是真正的绿色运动观点不同。C项“Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ (人们对什么是真正的绿色运动意见不一)”符合文意。故选C。
根据后文“Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise.(同样,使用标准设备和防护服爬山也将被视为绿色运动。)”表明什么样的锻炼会被视为绿色运动,由“Similarly,”可知,空格处也是在介绍绿色运动的类型,而E项中“can be called a type of green exercise”与后文中的“also be considered a green exercise”结构一致,都是在介绍绿色运动的类型,E项“So riding a bicycle in the forest can be called a type of green exercise (因此,在森林里骑自行车可以被称为一种绿色运动)”符合文意。故选E。
根据前文“The interaction with nature helps to lower peoples’ blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem.(与大自然的互动有助于降低人们的血压,更新他们的思维,并真正地提高他们的自尊。)”
根据上文“Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.(并非所有人都认为绿色运动比在健身俱乐部或健身房锻炼更有益。)” 因此,空格处也是在讲述健身俱乐部或者健身房的优点,G项“Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light (一些人指出,许多健身俱乐部都是为了充分利用自然光而建的)”符合文意,其中的“many health clubs”与上文的“in a health club or gym”上下一致。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My dad handed us the final envelope, and the final poem told us to knock on the door.

Dad was standing behind us by then, and “Merry Christmas,” he said, “The cat’s yours.”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My dad handed us the final envelope, and the final poem told us to knock on the door. I could hardly contain my excitement as we stood in front of the unfamiliar house, wondering what awaited us inside. Brandon knocked on the door, and we waited in anticipation for someone to answer. After what seemed like ages, the door slowly opened. A stranger, later known as the keeper, revealed a small cute ten - week - old cat staring up at us with big blue eyes. We both held the breath in surprise and looked up at our dad, who was smiling playfully.
Dad was standing behind us by then, and "Merry Christmas," he said," The cat's yours." We couldn't believe it. We had been begging our parents for a pet for years, but they had always said no. Now, we had our very own cat, thanks to the Treasure Hunt. We lifted the cat up and hugged him close, feeling grateful and overjoyed. That Treasure Hunt was the best one yet, and it had given us the greatest gift of all. That was the day that cat became part of our family. It was a gift far beyond anything I could have imagined.
