During our research for this sequence,we had been told we shouldn’t even bother trying to film the Pallas’s cat in winter.Filming such an animal was said to be near impossible. We wouldn’t be able to find such a small animal in the vast steppes of Mongolia.Besides this, they’re known to be easily frightened and extremely cautious. But we wanted to surprise audiences by showing them frozen worlds that lay outside of the Poles.
Arriving in Mongolia,I was struck by its vastness. It’s unbelievable that our first day presented us with a good view of our hard-to-find target. Our guide led us to the top of a hill.More than a kilometre away in an unimpressive pile of rocks,I could see a tiny spot,a Pallas’s cat! We were so excited!
We had been blessed with extremely low daytime temperature.Pallas’s cats have the densest coat of any cat,but even so they must save their energy as much as possible.Their movements at these temperatures were especially seldom. While conditions did not look promising,we still needed to see if we could actually film them.
The cats would only appear if the sun was out.But the steppe could be hit at any time by fast and bitter winds which would make any animal that had decided to appear come to an end.The decision as to whether to hold out for the weather to pass or to have a rest was always a painful one to make.
But as the weeks went on and we spent more time with the cats,it was astonishing to see just how it was that they were able to survive in such a difficult and unpleasant environment. The longer we spent with them, the more we found ourselves falling in love with these attractive little characters and their winter lives.

Dunkirk is a successful Nolan film and,as usual,he blew me away with intelligence within each shot. However,a source of annoyance in the film was choice to fill almost every scene with loud sounds all the way through. That was especially annoying when there was enough background noise to heighten the tension.
While the sound left much to be desired,I fell in love with the rest of the film.I was so absorbed in the story that I too almost felt I was on the beach or escaping on one of the small boats.Any sense of being blessed with a minute to relax is a false positive because within seconds the stress will pick up again but even more so.Possibly the closest I’ve been to cardiac arrest was watching a scene from this film where the soldiers are attempting to plug bullet holes(塞住弹孔) in a boat in order to keep it afloat and yet they know they could be hit by more bullets coming through the hull(船身) at any time.
The storytelling feels highly original too.We are presented with three different locations (the beach, the sea and the sky) from which everything takes place. Each location tells the story over a different period of time so when all three meet we are treated to a visual masterpiece of a sinking boat from three points of view.
It’s difficult to judge the performances because much emphasis(重点) is put on visuals rather than dialogue but Mark Rylance stands out as Mr Dawson, captain of one of the small boats that come to the soldiers’ rescue. The looks he gives his son on the trip to Dunkirk show so much about the relationship between the two.The other actor that stands out is Harry Styles. However,Styles had the “showiest” role and pulled it off well considering this was his first attempt at acting in a feature film.
5.What does the author think of the sound effects in Dunkirk
A.Strange. B.Deep.
C.Brilliant. D.Uncomfortable.
6.What kind of feeling does the underlined part “the closest I’ve been to cardiac arrest” convey

8.Why is it hard to judge the performances in Dunkirk in the author’s eyes
A.It lacks dialogue.
B.Some actors play for the first time.
C.It has few conflicts between characters.
D.The actors present impressive styles.

Scientists have known for many years that houseplants benefit people’s well-being.Now researchers have found a way to make plants even better for human health.Using a method called genetic modification(基因编辑),they raised plants that reduce indoor air pollution.GM means changing a plant or animal by fixing its DNA,including adding DNA from another species(物种).
Indoor air pollution is produced by cleaning products, cooking, and dust, among other things, and it can be bad for people’s health. In 1989,research done by NASA found that houseplants could clean the air in a home.Later studies, however, showed that plants actually made too small a difference to help much.Since then, scientists have been experimenting with the DNA of certain houseplants to try to create one that will reduce more air pollution.
In 2018,scientists from the University of Washington decided to adapt a houseplant called pothos,or devil’s ivy, which is popular and easy to care for.The team added new DNA based on a chemical found in a rabbit’s liver. In the animal, the chemical breaks down harmful matter. The team found that the new DNA made the plant better at taking in pollution.
More recently,a company called Neoplants added more DNA,from two types of bacteria(细菌).As the devil’s ivy grew, the team studied it carefully.Tests suggested that it was up to 30 times better at taking in pollution than the non-GM plants that NASA tested back in 1989.The company is also planning to add bacteria to the soil that comes with the plant, which could help break down even more polluting gases.
There is more work to be done, but the team at Neoplants plans to use this technology in other types of houseplants. If all goes well, the company hopes people in the US will be able to decorate their homes with pollution-busting plants by next year.Another company,Origen Air,sells a plant-based system that cleans the air in businesses and homes. It has already appeared on the market in Canada.
9.How can houseplants benefit people’s health according to the text
A.By relaxing people’s minds.
B.By producing more oxygen.
C.By cutting down air pollution.
D.By killing the bacteria in the air.
10.What do we know about pothos from the text
A.It is a rare and high-demanding houseplant.
B.NASA was the first to study its health benefits.
C.The plant itself can break down harmful chemicals.
D.GM technology betters its ability to reduce air pollution.
11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.No similar plant-based system has been put into use up till now.
B.Further improvements are needed before the system goes into service.
C.Application of the technology to other types of houseplants is already underway.
D.Neoplants’ genetically modified houseplants are sure to appear on the market soon.

Nowadays, people tend to take a selfie(自拍照) wherever they are. However, not all of them can take a perfect selfie. 1 So we’re going to give you tips on how to get a perfect one.
Use several devices(设备).Before you can even think about uploading a selfie on your social networking site, you need to decide which device to use in the first place.Although there are many devices you can use to take a selfie, the best one is a smartphone with front and back cameras. But it doesn’t mean that your other devices can’t come in handy. 2 In the end,all that matters is how well you practice and can get the right shots.
Catch good lighting and the background. To get a great selfie, you have to pay close attention to the lighting and background. If you’re taking a selfie indoors, the best place to be is facing a window or door where natural light is shining right on your face. This really brightens up the picture. 3
Aim for untraditional shots.Try taking a selfie with your pet. 4 One great thing about the selfie is that you don’t need to wait for the right time or place. You can reach out for your camera at once, make a pose, and get a rocking selfie.
5 Relax, enjoy, click—these are the three basic rules you need to follow.
A.Try to avoid the serious face.
B.Pretend to be very happy all the time.
C.Taking a selfie needs practice and skills.
D.You remember to show your best smiles there.
E.For an outdoor selfie, face the sun to make it work.
F.You just have to understand how each of them works.
G.It’s interesting to see what kind of expression it will give.
