Teaching contents
To learn the content from a poster and figure out the structure of it;
To teach basic knowledge of the Earth to students;
To compare the things on Earth to that on other planets.
Student analysis
There are nearly 10 students who are excellent in English learning, while there are nearly 8 students with weak English foundation in Class One, Grade Seven. The students in this class are generally active and interested in oral practice, especially group work, and dare to perform in class
Teaching aims
Knowledge aims:
Students can master the key sentences patterns like “there be, some..some, ...”;
Students can understand the main idea of each paragraph and make clear the structure of a poster as well as its genre.
Ability aims:
Students can develop their reading skills, including skimming, scanning, predicting, making use of context, collecting information and so on;
Students can know how to apply the learned sentence patterns to compare the Earth with other planets.
Emotion aims:
Students will be aroused attention to environmental pollution;
Students will be raised their awareness of protecting our home planet.
Teaching key and difficult points
Key Points:
To master the key sentence patterns like “there be, some..some, ...”;
To understand the main idea of each paragraph and make clear the structure of a poster as well as its genre.

Lead-in Do a quiz and have a group competition (2mins) Help students have a basic knowledge of the Earth; Teacher makes the groups compete with each other to finish the quiz. Students cooperate with group members to have a race giving the right answers of the quiz
Pre-reading predict the topic of the article from the title and pictures. (30s) Help students gather basic information before reading. Teacher guides students to predict the topic of the passage together. Students predict the topic with teacher.
While-reading Skim the article and find out the “5Ps” with desk mates (1 min) Know the main idea of each paragraph Teacher firstly lets students mark out each paragraph and then makes students work with desk mates to complete the words. Students mark out each paragraphs and cooperate with desk mates to find out words beginning with “P”.
While-reading Have a fast-reading and match the pictures with paragraphs/put the sentences into the blanks (3mins) Develop students’ s matching skills and filling in sentences according to the context; Enable students to learn two important sentence patterns Teacher assigns the matching task and sentence-filling task to students respectively. Students finish these two tasks and check the answers; at the same time, students mater the usage of two key sentence patterns.
While-reading Scan the article and figure out what the underline words refer to (1 min) Cultivate students’ competence of guessing words according to the context Develop students’ scanning skills Teacher leads students to locate the sentence containing these words and help students find out the sentences they refer to. Students locate the sentence accurately with the help of teacher, and infer the meaning properly.
While-reading Make clear the structure of the whole article (1 min) Make students have a clear idea of the structure of this passage Make students understand the main idea of each part Teacher shows students the basic outline and then guides students to complete it. Students finish the outline and check the answers.
While-reading Have a detailed reading and then fill in the blanks (2mins) Help students pay attention to the details in the passage; Help students grasp the key words Teacher assigns the blank-filling task to students and let students stand up to answer one by one Students find out the answers carefully through the passage and then stand up to share their answers.

Students take an active part in the group discussion and divide work to prepare reasons to illustrate their decision; finally, they report their results.
