Task 3 Writing a complaint letter about pollution
Task description
Pupils talk about a pollution problem near their school. They collaboratively write a complaint letter to the Environmental Protection Bureau about the pollution problem and give suggestions as to how the problem could be tackled.

Task steps
Read the rubrics and examples carefully with the class. Practise the language needed for the task and demonstrate the steps by using the pictures at each step of the task. Revise the text type ‘formal letters’ on page 23 of the Pupil’s Book with pupils.
Part A
Pupils get into groups. They think of different types of pollution and write them down on the task sheet.
Part B
Then they decide what the worst pollution problem near their school is and make notes about it.
Part C
Using the letter on page 23 of the Pupil’s Book as an example, pupils write a draft letter to the Environmental Protection Bureau about the worst pollution problem near their school. They write the draft on Copymaster 1.
Part D
Each group exchanges their draft letter with another group. They tick the checklist on Copymaster 2 and give it to the group. They suggest how to improve the draft.
Part E
They write out a final copy of the letter and display it in the classroom.
More able pupils could read their letter to the class.
