Teaching procedure
Step 1 Warming up
Show a video of September 11th Attacks and ask the students what the event is.
Then tell the students: The video was taken by accident. But thanks to it, the American TV was able to report the shocking news ahead of all other media. In just ten minutes all the world knew about it.
So the American TV got a ......(scoop)
Step 2 Pre-reading
Have a review of what a scoop is.(The phrase “get a scoop” has already appeared in the first Reading “Making the news”, so here is a review.)
A scoop is an important story which you get ahead of all the other media.
Ask the students whether we can immediately see the news on the newspaper just after the scoop is gotten?
No. Making news is far more complex.
Step 3 Reading
Task 1 Find out the main idea of the text.
The passage tells us the process of writing for a newspaper article.
The passage tells us the process of printing for a newspaper article.
The passage tells us the process of writing and printing for a newspaper article.
Task 2
1. Answer the question:
Who read his article before it was ready to be processed into film negative? Please name them.

Work out the writing and printing process for an article. (matches)

Step 4 Speaking
In the text, Zhou Yang got a scoop of a famous film star. But it doesn’t mention what the scoop is. Let students suppose themselves to be the reporter, discuss with the partner and speak out what the star might have done.
Let students pay attention to the following aspects while they are thinking.
1. A past tense should be used.
2. When, where and what happened?
3. How did you find out the news?
4. What is your opinion towards the event?
Three materials are given to help students. They may choose whichever they like to speak.

Sample(满文军): Man Wenjun took drugs with his friends in a pub when he celebrated for the birthday of his wife on May 18, 2009. A waiter in the pub told me about it. That’s why I know it.
Step 5 Writing
Ask students to work with their partner to write their own news article using the information in Speaking and following the steps below:
1. Sort out your two headings: a large one(the main headline) at the top and a smaller one under it.
2. Sort out the stages in your story:
What the star did?
How did you find out?
How the star reacted when you told him you knew his secret?
Your opinion.
Sample:
A star caught unexpectedly
Did he take drugs?
There has been a strange event happening in Chaoyang, Beijing. It has been said that a famous star, Man Wenjun, was caught taking drugs on May 18. An eyewitness said that Man Wenjun was taking drugs with his friends in a pub when he celebrated for the birthday of his wife. However, he denied he had taken drugs. He said it was just a simple party with friends. Whether it is true or not, as a public figure, a star should set a good example to the society.
Step 6 Homework
1. Improve the article and write it down on your exersise book.
2. Swap with other groups to improve the work.
3. Look through China Daily to learn more skills of writing different types of news articles by yourselves.
