Whenever summer is around the corner, you may already be dreaming about how you’ll spend your break.Chances are that staying in school is not your top pick. But for 13-year-old Simone Jones of Philadelphia—and more than 2 million other students in the U.S.—going to school in the summer is the only choice. That’s because Simone goes to a year-round school.
In fact,year-round schools have almost the same number of vacation days as traditional-calendar schools. In a year-round school, summer break is usually shortened to about four weeks;the remaining vacation time gets spread out over the rest of the year.Simone, for example, gets a few weeks off in the fall, winter, and spring.
That extra time off during the school year can be a good thing.“Everyone thinks a year-round school is hard,” says Simone.“But the little breaks take a lot of pressure(压力) off us.”
Reorganizing the year can prevent summer learning loss—that is,forgetting what you’ve learned from the prior(之前的) school year. However, there is a downside. In fact, some schools have tried year-round schedules(时间表) only to turn back when it was difficult to carry out.Try setting up a soccer game with another school when you’re on a break every few weeks.Planning family trips can be difficult too, especially if siblings(兄弟姐妹) are on different school schedules.
What does summer vacation mean in our culture It’s an American tradition,a time to create lasting memories. But is tradition a good enough reason to keep it around Summer break began 120 years ago, when it was very hot in the summer,so schools started closing.Today,we have air conditioning. And most parents work. For many kids, summer days are spent mostly indoors, playing video games and watching TV.Clearly the world has changed. Is it time for summer break to change, too

This year over twenty-three hundred teenagers from all over the world will spend about ten months in the US homes. They will attend the US schools, meet the US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action.Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn,George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred,a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study the language began to come to him.School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder.Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that were usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law,and all activities were around the family rather than the individual.Fred found the food too simple at first. Also,he missed having a car.“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time.In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time,in America,Mike,a friendly German boy,was also forming his idea.“I suppose I don’t think much of American schools,” he said.“It is far too easy by our level. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities.I think that maybe your schools are better in training for activities. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

Mathematics always looks like a big challenge for teenagers. When I first entered the senior high school,Mr Iyer,a strict maths teacher, was our class teacher. He always stuck to his discipline(行为准则).We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and finish all of his homework.
Even so,as our class teacher,we got to know him better.Noticing some of us couldn’t sit still and seemed restless one day as the mid-term exams approached,he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why.“There’s too much to do,” we sighed.“We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exam.” “Nothing is impossible,” Mr Iyer told us.“This classroom is on the second floor.Do you have a problem reaching here?” We reacted with blank stares.
“No,you don’t!” he said, answering his own question.“You have a staircase(楼梯) to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it in two giant jumps. You simply take one step at a time.Any task can be solved if you concentrate on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself if you keep at it.One step at a time. That’s the secret.” Then he wrote down an old motto on the blackboard—a thousand-mile journey begins with the first step.Having heard his staircase analogy(比拟),we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light.
Most of my classmates scored high in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr Iyer’s invaluable advice to my own students, they are all happy with a lighter learning burden.

Dealing with stress(压力) is a top topic of concern to young people.Stress has harmful influence on their study and health.According to an OECD survey, nearly half (47%) of Australian students feel very anxious when they study, compared to the international number of 37%.67% of Australian students say they feel very nervous even if they’re well-prepared for a test. And the international number of that is 56% (64% for girls and 47% for boys).
It is important that schools teach students how to recognize and best manage stress. These skills will continue to do good to them throughout their lives.School-based stress management programs, such as yoga(瑜伽) programs, have proven to be helpful in the United States.Similar programs will bring advantages to Australian school children.
Schools can better support students by providing yoga programs. And among them, mindfulness practice is the most common.Mindfulness practice requires people to pay attention to the present moment and realize and accept feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations as they really are.It improves the ability to get used to new environments for the first-year college students. They will also feel less stressed about schoolwork.
In high schools, students believe mindfulness-based yoga programs can improve memory, grades, and their abilities to control their feelings.Students also think yoga could make them less interested in smoking and drinking and increase connection with family and friends. In fact,at home, parents can consider practicing mindfulness together with their kids. They can turn to online yoga programs and apps, such as Head Space and Smiling Mind.
Given the above facts, offering yoga programs in schools may help young people learn to manage stress better.

When I got to school in the morning on the first day I realized how large the school was,and how many students went there.I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school.Luckily,a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late.I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar(不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend,Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four periods without too much of a challenge,I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade.
However, the fifth period changed everything.I didn’t feel ready after all.My teacher’s name is Mr Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr V.Mr V told us that we would have to write 40 essays(文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year.I love reading and writing, but come on,40 ESSAYS?AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet.Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly.Although a lot of things left me at a loss:the size of the campus, the crowds(人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now,I’m really happy about high school.I have lots of friends in my classes,I really like my teachers and I’m glad to meet new people.

Young adults(成年人) often have a lot to learn in school. However, occasionally, the life skills needed for them to become successful outside of school aren’t learned. This may be why the years after high school can sometimes be the most uneasy and tense times for young adults.
Some may say that life skills are to be taught by their parents rather than school, but that’s not exactly true. Some students don’t have a parent figure to teach them the necessary knowledge needed. As a result, they rely on school to provide them with those. This is why related courses should be set up in high schools.
Over the course of history, students generally go to an educational institution of some sort to find themselves spending their entire time learning math and science, instead of what is required for real world—communication, which is through behaviors and manners(礼仪).Manners are important when having a conversation with family, friends, teachers perhaps or even employers.High schools should find a way to teach manners as a way for students to have respect and be open-minded when it comes to other individuals.
In addition, how to deal with finances(财政) is one of the major life skills for students. For people, especially young people,to live in today’s financial environment, knowledge of personal finance is a must. For example, schools educating students about building credit scores and keeping up with a credit card is helpful. However, educational institutions do not spend a good amount of time talking about the topic of money managing: paying taxes, mortgage, bills, insurance, etc. It is time to extend financial knowledge by making personal finance a required course at high schools and universities.
With the essential instructions of communication and financial management provided to the young adults, they will be more successful in their future life.
