Vincent Willem van Gogh is a great Dutch painter. In 2017 one of his paintings was sold for $81 million.2021 seemed to be Vincent Willem van Gogh’s year. There were at least five different exhibits in nearly 40 U.S.cities regarding his works. It’s very surprising to know he sold only a few paintings in his lifetime, for only little profit. How did this now-famous painter fail to escape attention after his death It was probably thanks to a woman.
Six months after Van Gogh died, his beloved brother Theo passed away, who had expected to make his brother’s works well-known.Fortunately,Theo’s wife Johanna van Gogh-Bonge,as an English teacher at two different girls’ schools before her marriage, was left with their son and a sizable art collection. She decided to help Theo’s wishes come true.“During her lifetime, she devoted herself to raising awareness of Vincent’s art and letters,” says Luijten, the author of Johanna’s lifetime story.
Johanna tried all her best to improve Van Gogh’s name.To do this, she chose some of his works to sell and encouraged writers and art critics to write about his paintings though she was refused many times.Johanna didn’t lose heart. She lent some pieces to well-known museums and organized countless exhibitions and sales.“One of Johanna’s major achievements was the organization of an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1905,where she collected no less than 484 of Van Gogh’s works.A Van Gogh exhibition of this size would never again be matched,” Luijten explains.Another particular move happened in 1914 when Johanna published Van Gogh’s letters.Theo had kept hundreds of letters.“This was of great importance,as following the publication of the letters, the appreciation of Van Gogh as an artist increased further,” says Luijten.
“There’s little doubt that although Van Gogh was great,he wouldn’t be remembered to the level seen today without the influence of Johanna,” said Luijten.

In some parts of Africa, there are still big herds of wild animals like zebras, elephants, and giraffes. But today many of these wild animals are in danger and it worries many conservationists.Louis Liebenberg is one of them.He feels that having good information about animals is very important.People need to understand what happens to plants and animals over time. Are they increasing or decreasing in number What plants are the animals eating
African Bushmen may be able to help. For hundreds of years,Bushmen have understood the ways of wild animal: what the animals eat; where the animals go; and even where they sleep. However, the Bushmen don’t always speak the same language as the conservationists. This can cause problems when they work together. This is where the Cyber Tracker comes in.
The Cyber Tracker is an invention created by Louis Liebenberg. He hopes that together, the Cyber Tracker and the Bushmen can help protect the animals. The Cyber Tracker is a small computer that helps collect information about animals. It uses pictures, called “icons”,instead of words to record information. There are pictures for drinking, walking, fighting, sleeping, eating and other things. This way,the Bushmen can record what they see even without speaking the same language. The Cyber Tracker can collect very detailed and complicated information very quickly.
However, that’s not the only thing the Cyber Tracker can do.The small computer also contains a global positioning device. Each time a Bushman sees something interesting about an animal or plant,he pushes a button. The Cyber Tracker records exactly where the man is in the world. The Bushman can also record what the animals are eating by pushing different buttons to name about 50 plants.
However,Liebenberg adds that the human factor is also very important.A big part of the project is the Bushman’s ability to understand and correctly report everything he sees. The combination of machine and man seems to work very well. With the data collected by the Cyber Tracker,Liebenberg makes maps showing where the animal herds are and what the animals are eating, indicating facts about their health.
28.What does the underlined word “conservationists” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Local people.
B.Zoo keepers.
C.People protecting wildlife.
D.Equipment for wildlife research.
29.How does the Cyber Tracker make communication easy
A.People can see where the Bushmen are.
B.Researchers can write down information.
C.The software can identify about 50 plants.
D.The invention uses pictures rather than language.
30.What is NOT the function of the Cyber Tracker
A.To collect information about animals.
B.To locate an interesting animal or plant.
C.To record what the animals are feeding on.
D.To help with communication between animals.
31.Which is Liebenberg likely to agree with
A.The Cyber Tracker will help more wild animals.
B.Technology alone is making conservation easier.
C.The Cyber Tracker connects human with technology.
D.Every Bushman should learn how to use the Cyber Tracker.

One Concern is an AI company(人工智能公司) in California. It is using machine learning and AI to help firefighters. The company hopes its software can make exact predictions about earthquake damage. It can tell firefighters how to plan for an earthquake and how to do their jobs better when it happens.
Nicole Hu,a technology officer from One Concern, says the key is to feed the computers a lot of data about an area. The data may include information about homes and other buildings, the natural environment, and the size of an earthquake. The software then uses the information to make predictions about what would happen if there were an earthquake in the area.It then uses data from past earthquakes to see whether its predictions are any good, and changes its predictive models accordingly.
Gregory Deierlein,an earthquake engineer at the Stanford University, says one of the most surprising things about the company’s software is its ability to make use of data from an earthquake as it’s happening, and to change its predictions in real time.
In the past, researchers would collect data after an event and a few years later they’d produce new models, says Deierlein. Now the new models appear in a matter of minutes.
Dan Ghiorso leads the Woodside Fire Protection District(区) near San Francisco, which covers about 32 square miles. He says in the past, when an earthquake hit,he’d have to make educated guesses (based on experience and training) about what parts of this district might be badly damaged and then drive to each place to have a look around. He hopes One Concern’s software will change that.“Instead of driving thirty-two square miles,in fifteen minutes on a computer I can get a good idea of the damage,” he says.“Instead of me taking my educated guess, they’re putting science behind the predictive models.”
32.What do we know about the software’s predictions
A.They can tell people the size of an earthquake.
B.They are about when an earthquake may happen.
C.They are based on data from many different areas.
D.They can be made before and during an earthquake.
33.What is an advantage of the software according to Deierlein
A.It can make predictions very fast.
B.It is sold at very low prices.
C.It has many different uses.
D.It can be used by common people.
34.What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to
A.How to save people during earthquakes.
B.How Ghiorso gets to know earthquake damage.
C.How to train firefighters to make guesses.
D.How Ghiorso looks at new predictive models.
35.What is Ghiorso’ attitude towards the future of the new technology
A.Hopeful. B.Uncaring.
C.Worried. D.Doubtful.

Getting into the right focus for serious studying can be difficult. With roommates or family, incoming messages, the Internet, and so on,it’s easy to focus on other things, which can leave you unprepared for your tests. 36 Use these tips to make a quiet place that allows for concentration.
If you are on campus, roommates and dormitory can be loud, and if you are studying online from home, you might have to deal with your family’s comings and goings. 37 If you don’t care to study in silence, you could drown out(压过) the background noise of people talking around you.You could use earplugs(耳塞) or download a white noise app on your phone.
Another easy way to get focused on your study plan is realizing you need something that you forgot outside your study space. For example,be sure to have all the pens, notebooks and textbooks you will need to complete your work. 38 So having all the necessary things on hand will keep you focused.Besides,if you are doing work or reading on a laptop, make sure to bring your charger,as a failing battery may force you to stop studying.
39 Students with worksheets and practice problems would probably do better with a desk or a large table.Students with lots of reading may be more comfortable on a sofa or chair where they can get comfortable while they study.
These simple steps can create quiet and calm space for you to get to work.Putting time and effort into your studies is the most important part of attending college. So set yourself up with a study space that suits you now. 40
A.It can lead to academic success.
B.Making sure the surroundings best for you is important.
C.In this case, you’d better create some background music.
D.Choosing the right way for you can help you do better in study.
E.Having the perfect study space can make it easier to focus on your study.
F.Wherever you are, study requires focus,so creating a quiet space is important.
G.Looking for any of these in the course of study may make it hard to truly focus.

One noon,Mark knocked at the door, saying,“Take the letter.” Then,a little girl answered from inside,“I’m coming.” But after 3 minutes,no one came.Mark, the postman, said again,“Please hurry.I have to go to the next place.”
The girl,Jane, replied,“Sir,put the letter under the door.I’m coming. But it’ll take more time.” The old postman replied,“No,I’m waiting. It’s a registered letter. So your signature is needed.”
After a long time, the door opened.Mark was angry and was about to shout at the girl. But he was shocked to see a little girl who had no legs.He immediately had great pity for her.He quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left.
The little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother wasn’t in this world. And her father used to work far away.He wasn’t rich and could not buy the girl prostheses(假肢).To take care of her,her aunt stayed with her every night. But she lived alone during the day.
In about two months, whenever mail came,Mark would knock and call Jane. Then he’d wait patiently at the door.Gradually, interaction and attachment(依恋) grew between them. And they learned more about each other.
Jane noticed Mark used to come barefoot(赤脚) to deliver mail. The rainy season came. One day, when Mark left after delivering the letter, his footprints were left on the wet soil.Jane came out with a piece of paper, put it on the footprints and took down the picture of his feet. Then she handed her aunt the pocket money she had saved, and asked her to get shoes of that size and keep them in the house.

Nowadays, many foreign students fly to China,a country thousands of kilometers from their own, just to learn Chinese.
Frank Marshall is one of them, though he would rather be called Simon Fan,a Chinese name given to him by his friend. He has been at Shanghai International Studies University for a year. Before this,he had studied Chinese for a year at a university in Germany.“So far,I have had no difficulty talking with Chinese people, but when they talk with each other,I cannot easily understand them,” he said,“Learning another language is like stepping out of a door, through which I can look back and see more clearly my own language.”
Simon Fan has been to many places in China.Among them,he likes Xi’an and Suzhou very much.“It’s my wish to learn Chinese and make friends,” he said.
