Adverbial Clauses of Time(时间状语从句)
用来修饰谓语动词、其他动词、定语、状语或整个句子的从句叫状语从句。状语从句有很多种,今天我们主要学习由when, while, before, after, as soon as, since, until引导的时间状语从句。
◆when从句的动作可与主句的动作同时发生,也可先于主句的动作发生;从句的谓语动词可以是延续性动词,也可以是瞬间性动词。并且when有时意为“就在那时”。如:
When I got home, he was watching TV.
Mozart started writing music when he was four years old.
I was about to go out when the telephone rang.
◆while只能指一段时间,而不能指时间点。从句的动作或与主句的动作同时发生,或主句的动作是在从句动作的过程中发生的。因此,从句中的动词必须是表示延续性动作或状态的动词。如:
While I was sleeping, my brother came in.
He visited a lot of places while he was traveling.
when和while的区别
when与while都意为“当……的时候”。when引导的时间状语从句, 谓语动词既可以是持续性的, 也可以是终止性的而while引导的时间状语从句, 谓语动词只能是持续性的, 并且常用进行时态。试比较:
When he woke up, it was eight o’clock.
While he woke up, it was eight o’clock.
When I was waiting for a bus, I met her.
While I was waiting for a bus, I met her.
◆before表示主句的动作发生在从句之前。如:
I won’t tell you the truth before he comes back.
◆after表示主句的动作发生在从句的动作之后。如:
After she finished the work, she went to have supper.
◆as soon as表示主句的动作紧随从句动作之后发生的。表示“一……就”。如:
I will call you as soon as I arrive home.
Mother became unhappy as soon as I mentioned his name.
◆until(=till)在肯定句中,常与延续性动词连用,意为“到……为止”;在否定句中,常与表示瞬间性动作的动词连用,意为“直到……才”,这时till和until可以与before替换。如:
Last night I waited until eleven o’clock, but he didn’t return.
My son won’t come home until it is dark.
◆since可引导时间状语从句,意思是“自从……的时候起;从此;从……以来;……以后”等。
1) 若since引导的状语从句的谓语动词是终止性动词(如go, come, leave, start, begin等)的过去时, 则从句表示的时间是“从该动作开始的那一时刻起”。这是最常见的一种用法。如:
He has studied very hard since he came to our school.
2) 若since引导的状语从句的谓语动词是持续性动词或表示状态的静态动词(如live, stay, study, learn, smoke, be等)的过去时, 则从句表示的时间是“从该动作或状态的完成或结束时算起”。如:
I haven’t heard from him since he lived here.
I haven’t eaten snakes since I wasn’t a student at school.
=I haven’t eaten snakes since I left school.
