My eighteen-year-old daughter Julia called twenty minutes after she left, saying she had an accident. I grabbed my shoes and was in the car in less than a minute. When I finally saw her, I hugged her tightly. Then I looked at the other driver. Learning that he fell asleep behind the wheel at about seventy miles an hour when the speed limit was forty-five, I could have choked him.
“It could have been worse,” I reminded myself as she cried all the way to the doctor’s office. Luckily, four days after the accident, Julia felt better. At her appointment, her doctor cleared her to resume normal activities, including driving. But I could tell by her look that she had no intention of getting behind the wheel.
Later that day, I sat with Julia as she spoke on the phone with our insurance agent. On the phone, she was professional, telling the agent what had happened in a clear, brief way. I realized she sounded like an adult. And adults drive cars. I realized that no matter how I felt about it, allowing Julia to give in to her fear wasn’t good for her. When she hung up, I hugged her. “You’re stronger than you think,” I said. “And tomorrow you’re going to drive my car and meet your friends for lunch. You just have to push through the fear and do it, and it will get easier each time you do.” I ignored the fear in her eyes and the way my heart sped up when I thought about Julia behind the wheel again.
The next day Julia drove my car to meet her friends. As I watched her leave, I felt nervous and proud. She texted me when she got to the restaurant, and I felt my heart rate return to normal. The tears I’d been holding back all week flooded my eyes. Watching her leave the house without me for the first time since the accident was frightening, but it was also necessary.
4. What was the author’s reaction to the driver’s behavior
A. She almost burst with anger. B. She felt guilty for her daughter.
C. She felt sympathy for him. D. She was choked with sorrow.
5. What did the doctor suggest to Julia
A. Staying away from driving. B. Attending a driving lesson.
C. Contacting the insurance agent. D. Retaking her routine activities.
6. What did the author realize when Julia spoke on the phone
A. The driver took the blame for the accident.
B. The accident had been worse than expected.
C. Julia should overcome the fear to drive.
D. Julia was smart to deal with any trouble.
7. Why did the author cry at Julia’s text
A. Julia was good at learning to drive.
B. Julia recovered mentally and physically.
C. Julia had supportive friends and parents.
D. Julia could look after herself when driving.

Royal family gather at Windsor Castle for first Easter Sunday service without the Queen on April 9th. Attendees and members of the royal family wore a variety of stylish hats throughout the ceremony. It is a requirement for all women to wear hats on royal occasions. This rule dates back to the 1950s when upper class and royal women would rarely show their hair in public, according to the BBC.
Hats were originally worn for practical reasons such as protection from the sun, rain or cold weather, but quickly people wore them for other purposes. The top hat, for example, was reserved for upper-class men and was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used hats to signify social status, wealth and fashion. The larger the hat, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.
In addition to status, hats played an important role in British social etiquette. Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.
But hats were not always a symbol of status and etiquette. The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. The bowler hat became an iconic item of British fashion, worn by both men and women.
Today, hats continue to be an essential part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. The fedora is also making a comeback among younger gen-erations. Shopping in hat shops provides you with a glimpse of British hat. Caps, trilbies, beanies, and berets are just some of the styles available.

New genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color.
The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made.
The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall.
While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups opposing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.
12. The Arctic apples will not be labeled “GMO” because ________.
A. actually these apples are not genetically modified food
B. the fruit will be sold as bagged slices in up to 400 stores
C. there is not enough space for the label on the packaging
D. information of their apples can be checked on the Internet
13. How do Arctic apples stay fresh according to the Okanagan team
A. By changing the fruit’s DNA to reduce relevant enzyme.
B. By decreasing the percentage of engineers in the team.
C. By treating apple slices with calcium and vitamin C.
D. By adding a little bit of lemon juice to the slices.
14. What is the Friends of the Earth’s attitude to Arctic apples
A. Disapproving. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Cautious.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. A Novel Way to Keep Arctic Apples From Turning color.
B. Protest against Apples Entering US Markets due to the label.

Music has always been an essential part of my family. As a little girl, I often watched my mom singing with others in the church. As I grew older, she and I would sing while we did the dishes or hung clothes. My brother Dean was also a musical soul. In good time or in bad, there was always music in our house. It shaped us, comforted us, and gave us a way to express feelings that might otherwise have gone unspoken.
After Dean became a father, we learned that his oldest son was on the autism spectrum. My nephew Dj did not handle social situation well, and sometimes even for him to speak aloud outside the family was a struggle. He worked very hard to overcome his fears, so much so that the year he was eight, he decided he wanted to be part of the Christmas music program with the other children in his Sunday school class. The part he had been offered was one that required him to sing a verse all on his own - a solo.
My brother carefully explained to him that this would mean singing in front of the audience; there would be no one singing with him. Dj considered this very carefully. After a couple of days, he decided that he would accept the part. He explained to us that he believed he could do it because it was a very special occasion, and lie would practice until he was as perfect as he could be. He said he knew his daddy would help him to be the best singer possible.
For over a month, he and his father practiced together. Every evening would find them locked away in the music room, my brother on guitar, and my nephew’s small voice coming from somewhere deep down inside his little body. He gained confidence, and when the day of the concert arrived, he was certain all would go well. My brother waited backstage, giving Dj double thumbs-up, and he came out lo sit with the rest of the family to watch and take photos.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When it was finally time for Dj to sing, the music played on, and he froze.

The next day, Julia drove my car to meet her friends.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B

8. What is the significance of the top hat in British culture
A. It was worn by the working class.
B. It was a personal statement of fashion.
C. It was used to protect people from the rain.
D. It was worn at formal events and signified wealth.
9. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Routine. B. Practice. C. Manners. D. Origin.
10. Which hat was popular among postmen and train drivers in Britain
A. Top hat. B. Fedora. C. Bowler hat. D. Beret.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To attract more visitors to Britain.
B. To introduce the hat culture in British.
C. To show his or her opinions on British hats.
D. To tell an interesting story about British hats.
D 9. C 10. C 11. B
第二段提到“The top hat, for example, was reserved for upper-class men and was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used hats to signify social status, wealth and fashion. The larger the hat, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.”
第三段提到“ Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.”(在室内,尤其是在正式场合,男性被要求脱帽以示尊重。
第四段提到“The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. ”(圆顶硬礼帽发明于1849年,是工人阶级,尤其是从事交通运输的工人所戴的。)由此判断,硬圆礼帽是工人阶层戴的帽子样式,因此postmen and train drivers in Britain (英国的邮递员和火车司机)最有可能佩戴的帽子为bowler hat(圆顶硬礼帽)。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。第一段由英国王室出席仪式时的戴帽礼仪引出了英国关于戴帽子的历史。结合全文以及最后一段“Today, hats continue to be an essential part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. ”(今天,帽子仍然是英国文化的重要组成部分,全国各地有许多新旧帽子店。)由此判断,这篇文章目的在于介绍英国帽子文化。故选B。
D
C. GM Apples That Don’t Brown to Reach US Shelves This Fall.
D. Apples That Can Stay Free of Browning as Long as Three Months.
D 13. A 14. A 15. C

根据文中第三段的第二句“The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks.”(奥卡那根大学的研究小组改造了这种水果的DNA,使其产生更少的酶可以使白色果肉变成棕色的酶。 故选A项。
故选A项。
通读全文尤其是第一段中“New genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). ” (由一家生物公司设计的苹果,今年秋天将会发行,但不会贴上转基因生物的标签。)可知本文介绍了一种秋季即将上市的新科技的苹果。这种苹果能够保鲜的时间较久,不易变色。故选C项。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了应对倦怠的四种方法。
【16题详解】
前文提到“It can come from working overtime or under stressful conditions.”(它可以来自于加班或在有压力的情况下。)后文提到“All you have to do is identify feelings of burnout and know how to deal with them. Try these out next time you’re feeling overwhelmed.”(你所要做的就是确定你的倦怠情绪,知道如何与它们打交道,下次你重新感到不知所措的时候,试一试。) D项“It can be also from dealing with difficult people.”(它也可能来自与难相处的人打交道。)
后文提到“Experts suggest starting small and dividing the whole schedule into the smallest sections. ”(专家建议从小的开始,把整个时间表分成最小的部分。)且该段小标题“Focus on advancing tiny goals.”(专注于推进小目标。)由此判断,在关注自己目标的时候应该不要设置的特别大,而是要分解为小目标,这样才方便自己推进,也不会让自己感到很为难。G项“Sometimes the to-do list gets so long that you feel you can hardly breathe.”(有时候任务清单太长了,你都喘不过气来。)
前文提到“Ask for a rest day if you need one to do nothing other than eat your favorite ice cream, go for a run, or meet a friend for lunch.”(如果你需要休息一天,除了吃你最喜欢的冰淇淋、跑步或和朋友共进午餐外,什么也不要做。),后文提到“Be sure to get enough sleep each night, too; this has a huge effect on one’s mental well-being and performance.”(每天晚上也要保证充足的睡眠;这对一个人的心理健康和表现有巨大的影响。) E项提到“Taking those hours off may seem like a big deal.”(休息几个小时似乎是一件大事。)
该段提到“It’s hard to feel frustrated after a sweaty weightlifting or a long run, Exercise reduces students’ sensitivity to anxiety, so think of that exercise time as building your protection against the burnout. ”(在大汗淋漓的举重或长跑后,很难感到沮丧。锻炼可以降低学生对焦虑的敏感性,所以把锻炼时间看作是建立你对倦怠的保护。)由此判断,本段主要强调了运动(特别是户外运动)对抗焦虑感的重要性,A项“Get active.”(活跃起来。)符合文意。故选A。
前文提到“People’s health, well-being, everything in life, is way better if you’re connected with other people. Social network is a precious resource but reaching out to people in reality is much more beneficial. ”(人们的健康,幸福,生活中的每一件事,如果你和其他人联系在一起,都会变得更好。社交网络是一种宝贵的资源,但与现实中的人接触更有益。)由此判断,加强在现实中与其他人的接触和交流也能降低疲惫的感觉,F项“So communicate with other people face to face, not on your phone.”(所以和别人面对面交流,不要用手机。)

Better Learning Habits Lead to Better Results
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Better Learning Habits Lead to Better Results
Many people fail to achieve ideal results even though they have strong interests in what they learn. The fact is that it can be quite difficult to have a better outcome without better learning habits.
When it comes to English learning, reflection can be one of the good habits. For example, to improve speaking skill, top English learners may record their speech and find out the wrong pronunciations when they listen. Their speaking ability develops by reflecting on their performances.
Forming better habits requires time and energy, so my suggestion is: never give up and keep practicing. Only in this way can we receive better results which meet our expectations.

Para. 1:
When it was finally time for Dj to sing, the music played on, and he froze. His little face grew pale, and we could see the panic in his eyes as the silence grew. The pianist started the music again but still nothing came out. The entire audience seemed to lean forward in expectation. The silence seemed enormous. The whole family of us were all staring at our little boy, hoping he would cheer up and act out his part. Then the pianist started over again, and a low voice filled the air, singing the song.
Para. 2:
Everyone turned to see who was singing, while I knew it was my mother. My mother and I were fixed on the little angel on stage. The color came back to his face, and his eyes began to sparkle. He opened his mouth and began to sing along, his little voice growing stronger with each word. The show ended with thunderous applause, with the kids bowing dramatically, accepting their praise for a job well done. I turned to my brother with tears in my eyes. I knew at that time no words needed to be spoken; the understanding between us was louder than the applause that night.
