Text 10
M: (18)Most universities and colleges in the United States have a health insurance plan for international students. It generally costs around$300 a year now. You may think it is a waste of money, but if you have even a small medical problem, the insurance will help you to pay the bills. So, you should buy a medical insurance when you arrive at the university. I am sure the International Students Office will help you with that. (19)Private doctors are the standard form of the medical care in America, but there are also college clinics, public and private clinics, etc. The quality of medical care can be different in these different places, so it would be better if you ask an American friend for advice before going to see a doctor. Before you leave China, I suggest you have a medical examination. If there is something wrong, you can have it cured in your own country. (20)Don’t forget to take your personal and family health records abroad with you. They provide important and useful information if you need to go to the hospital. But remember to take good care of yourself. Don’t work too hard.

Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. 故选A项。
根据文章第三段“For example, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago, advocating “digitally underrepresented” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, but have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental building block to help preserve them. (例如,牛津大学出版社几年前推出了牛津全球语言,倡导“数字代表性不足”的语言。他们专注于推广可能在全球有近一百万使用者的语言,但很少或根本没有在线存在。因此,他们一直在创建数字词典作为帮助保存它们的基本构建块)”可知,Oxford Global Languages 在创建数字词典,努力以数字的形式保存一些语言的基本构建块。故选D项。

【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.( Knowles教授毫不惊讶地发现,与较长的截止日期相比,指定较短的截止日期会增加收到回复的机会)”可推断,Knowles教授对这项研究结果的态度是不惊讶的。
通读全文,再根据文章第一段“They say procrastination is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. (人们说拖延是时间的小偷——实际上截止日期才是罪魁祸首)”以及第三段“specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline.

故填were found。

His first shot bounced around but missed. As soon as Kevin’s teammates had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who was standing in the certain place near the free-throw line. He shot it slowly, but he missed it again. Nevertheless, all the players of his team kept throwing the ball to him and clapped him with encouragement. Very soon the audience figured out what was happening, so one by one they stood up and clapped their hands. The whole playground thundered with the clapping and shouting, “Kevin! Kevin!” And Kevin just kept shooting.
Finally, the ball took one bounce and went in unexpectedly. With arms shooting high into the air, Kevin shouted, “I won! I won!” He jumped high and hugged every teammate excitedly. Everyone could see tears welling in his eyes. They began to shout wildly and clap their hands to congratulate him. The feathery snow danced in the late afternoon air, making a beautiful sight. The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. Even though they lost this game again that afternoon, everyone left the playground truly feeling like a winner.

It was not turning out to be the great fishing trip we had imagined. It certainly was not the one Father had promised. All day the rain beat against the roof of our cabin.
Father sat at the window, looking out over the lake. My older brother Jeremy, who had recently turned sixteen years old, lay on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. I paced the room, occasionally glancing toward Father to see if there was any sign that the rain would let up.
“I wish we’d never come out to this boring place,” Jeremy said.
I stopped pacing and looked at Father. He gave no sign that he had heard, and I hoped he hadn’t. This trip meant a lot to him. He used to come out here with own father.
I started pacing again.
“I mean, if we’d stayed home, at least I could watch TV, go out with my friends or play my guitar,” Jeremy continued.
Silence continued for some time. I kept pacing, imagining the trip I had dreamed of before the bad weather had set in. I saw us in the boat, anchor dropped in a calm bay casting our lines toward shore, the way Father had described it when he was trying to convince Jeremy to come along.
Father stood up and turned to face us. He smiled at me. “Come on, get up, Jeremy,” he said. “Let’s go fishing, boys.” He picked up his fishing rod and the tool box, opened the door, and walked out into the rain.
Jeremy and I watched Father walk down the pathway toward the dock (码头),the wind whipping (打) at his hair, the rain wetting his clothes. Jeremy shook his head. “He's crazy if he thinks I’m going with him,” he said. “Maybe I would have when I was a little kid, but not now,” he said.
I waited for a while, unsure of what to do, looking out the open door at Father, who was walking onto the dock, facing against the storm. Jeremy couldn’t believe I picked up my rod and walked out into the storm after Father. I couldn’t quite hear what Jeremy said because of the wind in my ears, but I heard his footsteps behind me as he began to follow me out to the boat.
24. What does the underlined phrase “let up” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Stop. B. Continue. C. Hit. D. Arrive.
25. Why was the fishing trip important for the author’s father
A. He had never fished in the rain.
B. It’s his son Jeremy’s first fishing trip.
C. He and his own father usually went fishing there.
D. He wanted to have a better relationship with his sons.
26. What can we know about Jeremy
A. He doesn’t enjoy fishing.
B. He dislikes outdoor activities.
C. He is addicted to playing the guitar.
D. He showed no interest in the fishing trip.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To express the fondness for a particular day.
B. To describe a fishing experience in the rain.
C. To reflect on the old family tradition of fishing.
D. To recall the generation gap between father and brother.
C
According to the statistics shared by UNESCO, at least 43% of the total languages being spoken across the world are in danger of extinction. Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. Linguists (语言学家) and researchers believe that by the end of the century, at least half of the world’ s languages will have died.
Language activists and people who speak these endangered languages spare no effect to fight back. Scientists believe that digitalization might be our only hope to preserve some of these quickly disappearing languages in the online world.
For example, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago, advocating “digitally underrepresented” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, but have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental building block to help preserve them.
There have been countless other projects like this with the same aim. Another is the Rosetta Project, which aims to create a handheld digital library that will carry more than 1,500 languages. It will be appropriately sized to fit nicely into our hands, and will come with around 13,000 pages of information. Projects like these have as their main goals to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.
Countless languages will continue to perish as the remaining speakers die. Of course we cannot only rely on digitization to deal with worldwide languages loss. However, it is a step in the right direction. These digital tools offer endangered languages many opportunities to bounce back and survive.
28. What does the data in paragraph 1 mainly show
A. Many languages are endangered.
B. Culture determines language development.
C. Human activity has an influence on languages.
D. Many linguists attempt to protect threatened languages.
29. What does Oxford Global Languages try to do
A. Promote online courses of local languages.
B. Publish paper dictionaries of global languages.
C. Increase dying language speakers to a million.

They say procrastination (拖延) is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short.
Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research.Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help.
The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.”
He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it.”
32. Why did Professor Knowles do the research
A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination.
B. To find out whether people are interested in charity.
C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination.
D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion.
33. What most likely leads to procrastination
A. No deadlines. B. Short deadlines. C. Specific deadlines. D. Long deadlines.

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, his smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart was bigger than the mountain sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life was quite infectious.
When Kevin joined the boys’ school basketball team, basketball became the center of his life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d think he was preparing for the NBA.He liked to stand in a certain place near the free-throw line and shoot at the basket. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout at Randy, jumping up and down with the excitement of shooting.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game didn’t help them win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night when it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.
It was a cold snowing afternoon when their last game came. As the last-place team, they played against the first-place team. The game went pretty much the same as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “This is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. When they had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who was standing in his special place near the free-throw line.
