An abacus, also called counting frame (框架), was first used by the Asians for showing arithmetic processes (计算过程).
It was in use centuries before the invention of the written modern system of numbers. And it was widely used by merchants (商人) and clerks in ancient China, Japan, Africa, India and elsewhere. Nowadays, the abacus often has a wooden frame with beads (珠子) on the wires. The user of an abacus is called an abacist, who calculates by sliding (滑动) the beads of the abacus by hand.
It is said that the abacus was invented in 550 BC in China. The use of the word “abacus” first appeared before 1387. Its plural is abacuses.
A new kind of abacus was found on the island of Salamis (near Greece) in 1846. It may be the oldest counting board discovered so far.
As computers and mobile phones appeared, people began to pay less attention to abacuses. Most young people don’t even know how to use them. I think they will die out in a few years. It will be a great pity.
