A group of wandering wild elephants have become an overnight Internet hit globally. While the original group was made up of 16 elephants, two decided to return home after a week. The rest continued their journey northward, stopping only for a short break in November 2020 to allow a newly-born elephant and its mother to recover.
Since leaving the reserve, the elephants have walked over 500 kilometers. Along the way, they entered farms for food and water, walked through urban streets and even paid a visit to a car dealership(经销店) and a retirement home. No animals or people were hurt. However, they destroyed more than $1 million worth of crops.
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or where they are heading. While they are known to leave their habitats in search of food, this is the longest migration of wild elephants recorded in China. Because of this, some guess that the elephants may be lost. However, others think the elephants were forced to move due to deforestation. Successful conservation efforts have almost doubled the elephant population in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. However, their natural habitat has been greatly reduced.
"As their populations increase, they search for more food," Becky Shu Chen said. "You could say that the increase in agricultural land in their region is like finding a big sweet shop, right on their doorstep.
The wandering herd's search for a suitable home was noticed by locals who eagerly followed their daily movements on social media. Adam Chang, assigned to deliver food to the elephants, says, "Before this meeting, I just felt curious about animals. Now, I think I would volunteer in animal rights groups to preserve those giant creatures."

As the climate warms, birds are shrinking(缩小) and their wingspans(翼展) are growing, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed 70, 716 birds from 52 kinds of North American migratory(迁徙的) bird species collected over 40 years. The authors say the study is the largest of its kind and that the findings are important for understanding how animals will adapt to climate change.
"We found almost all of the species were getting smaller," said lead author Brian Weeks, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. "The species were pretty diverse, but they responded in a similar way," he said. "The consistency(一致性) was shocking." He said the study of animal responses to climate change often focused on shifts in the geographical range or timing of life events, like migration and birth. But this study suggests body morphology(形态) is a crucial third aspect.
"That's one major implication," he said. "It's hard to understand how birds will adapt without taking all three of these things into consideration."
The findings showed that from 1978 to 2016, the length of the birds' lower leg bone shortened by 2.4%. Over the same time, the wings lengthened by 1.3%.
The evidence suggests warming temperatures caused the decrease in body size, which in turn caused the increase in wing length.
"Migration is an incredibly taxing thing they do," Mr. Weeks said, explaining that the smaller body size means less energy available for the birds to complete their long journeys. He said the birds most likely to survive migration were the ones with longer wingspans and smaller bodies.
The scientists aren't exactly sure why warmer temperatures cause birds to shrink. One theory is that smaller animals are better at cooling off, losing body heat more quickly.

A
答案:1-4 CDDA
The rest continued their journey northward, stopping only for a short break in November 2020 to allow a newly-born elephant and its mother to recover."
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or where they are heading."
Before this meeting, I just felt curious about animals. Now, I think I would volunteer in animal rights groups to preserve those giant creatures.(在这次见面之前,我只是对动物感到好奇。
A group of wandering wild elephants have become an overnight Internet hit globally.(一群流浪的野象一夜之间在全球成为网络热门。)"
We found almost...at the University of Michigan.(作为主要作者的密歇根大学助理教授Brian Weeks说:'我们发现几乎所有的物种都在变得更小。')"和"The species were pretty diverse...was shocking.(他说:'这些物种非常多样化,但它们的反应是相似的。
根据画线词后文中"the smaller body size means less energy available for the birds to complete their long journeys"可知,画线词所在部分语境为:迁徙是它们做的一件令它们非常疲劳的事情,故画线词taxing意为"费力的"。 故选A项。
The scientists aren't exactly sure why warmer temperatures cause birds to shrink.(科学家们还不完全确定为什么温度升高会导致鸟类缩小。)"
