When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course
I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something
different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word
“prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior One is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll
surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to
academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to
my second goal.
My mother has always told me put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally
healthy. A person can’t study without the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first,
no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that
I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the

world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our
weaknesses. Everyone should try to make use of all of life’s opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my
case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies
and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new
journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
24.During Senior One, what does the writer want to do first
A.Focus on improving her overall grades.
B.Join as many school clubs as possible.
C.Learn how to manage her time well.
D.Spend more time on outdoor activities.
25.What is the attitude of the writer towards failure
A.Discouraged. B.Brave. C.Worried. D.Careful.
26.What does the underlined sentence “it’s the other way around” in the last paragraph mean
A.It is the opposite. B.It is difficult.
C.It is necessary. D.It is helpful.
27.What is the writer’s purpose of the passage
A.To share her goals for the coming school year.
B.To stress the importance of health to students.
C.To show what she likes about high school life.
D.To explain how to balance studies and activities.

Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which runs London Zoo, brought together 16 scientists from different
organizations to make a full “health check” on 215 miles of the Thames. The results of the first-ever State of the
Thames Report have been shown to the public and there’s both good and bad news for London’s main waterway.
First up, since the Thames was pronounced “biologically (生物学地) dead” in1957, the number of animals
and plants growing in and around the river has increased greatly. Natural habitats (栖息地) are also on the
increase, some of which can help in the fight against climate (气候) change.
It’s not all good news though—like everywhere else, the Thames is influenced by climate change, mainly
through changes in water temperature and sea levels. The Thames is increasing in temperature at an average (平均
数) of 0.2℃ each year, changing the natural environment.
Water levels are also rising in the Thames—at Silvertown. There has been an average increase of 4.26 mm
per year since 1990, which makes London more likely to be flooded.
As with pretty much everywhere on Earth, the Thames needs climate change to be stopped in order to make
itself a living river in the future.
The Environment Agency has put together the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan which sets out a long-term plan for
dealing with the influence of rising sea levels for the rest of this century, in order to protect London from floods.
James Brand, Thames Estuary 2100 Advisor at the Environment Agency said, “We are glad to support the
State of the Thames Report. If we are going to stop climate change, nature needs to be at the heart of our activities,
both in slowing the pace of future change and dealing with the changes that we are already seeing.”
28.What did the 16 scientists do with the Thames
A.They did an examination of it.

“Snowplow (扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking their adult
children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don’t sleep through a test, and even
calling their kids’ employers.
“‘Helicopter (直升机) parenting’ means monitoring their kids’ every activity, which is out of date.” Claire
Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times. “Some rich mothers and fathers now are
more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children’s path to success so that they don’t have to meet
failure or lose opportunities.”
There is a mother who started a charity (慈善机构) in her son’s name to try to raise his chances of being
accepted to the college. Another parents spent years helping their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she
didn’t like. Once she got to college, she had problems with the food in her school because it was all covered in
sauce.
A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor visits or
haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids’ bosses whether their children are having an
issue at work.
As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of money to a
school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, whatever
the income, education, or race is.
Julie, a teacher at Stanford, told the Times that “snowplow parenting” is not a reasonable approach. “The
parents should prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid,” she said.
32.What do we know about “snowplow parenting”
A.It is out of date.
B.Parents help kids deal with most problems.
C.It gets kids ready for school life.

Some students prefer to learn by themselves. They think they can learn better in this way because they have
more freedom, pressure and independence. There is some truth in their way. 36 Actually, it is better to
have a teacher, especially when they learn something more difficult.
First, a teacher can act as a guide to lead you to success. When you learn, you need help and advice. A
teacher will give you a hand when you face difficulties. 37
What is more, a teacher puts real pressure on you. If you study by yourself, you must be
strong-minded enough to keep on. 38 But under the guidance of a teacher, you will feel there is
always someone to watch you. The teacher may give you homework to do. You must complete the homework, or
you will not pass the course.
Last but not least, studying with a teacher will help you receive the benefit of the teacher’s knowledge.
39 They teach students how to learn and how to obtain information. They guide all of you in class to discuss
the material and provide extra material to broaden the scope of the topic.
40 I choose to learn in a big family—my school. Without a teacher, I would feel there would be no
fun and no pressure. I could not learn well in such dull and depressing circumstances.
